View Full Version : Olympics Highlights on HD Media? - Awesome world records worth watching
kschmit2 08-16-08, 01:44 PM Anyone know if there will be some highlights releases on Blu-ray?
After all everything is produced in HD, and there have been lots of events worth watching.
E.g. the Men's 100m Finals with an incredicle world record of 9.69 sec
(see here if you have missed it: http://rapidshare.com/files/137788087/2008_Beijing_Olympics_100m_Finals_Men.wmv)
donricouga 08-18-08, 09:46 AM That would be incredible actually. Some good highlights from all major sporting events would be a great buy.

If you are a real HD fan you should own this supposedly dead format. It is the easiest way to record HDTV and save it on physical media. I recorded superbowls from over 6 years ago and my all time favorite, the Oklahoma vs. Boise State game.

I'm guessing the OP wanted it on blu-ray to get better PQ. You know... macroblock free :D
Just watch the diving competitions. That event was full of macroblocking on my Comcast HD

The OTA feed is full of macroblocking, too. Primetime is better than anything during the day. They at least try to clean up the replays.
NBC/Universal is doing a great job of keeping us from making usable versions of our own homemade AVC HD's, recordable Blu-Ray's, D-Theather and 3x DVD's of the events.

I was at that game in Glendale sitting on the 40 yard line. Holy Crap, talk about nerveracking, anguish, elation........An unforgettable experience.:)

Nonsense. If you are a real fan you should be the current owner of my late W-VHS recorder. :D That's it, analog 1080i, any DRM is dead - no macroblocking etiher, pal! :D

I suspect this poster was referring to the quality of manufactured Blu-ray discs versus all live-delivered HD content methods, which make any limitations of recording/archiving methods secondary if not irrelevant.

Wow, that would have been awesome. I was completely stressed out just watching it on TV!:D
Wesley5 08-19-08, 08:55 PM Opening ceremony is ideal eye candy for HD release; NBC already has DVD version on sale now, they sure know how to cash it in.
A bit OT, NBC stream is using silver light, but there is no apparent way to set it to full screen. Can Ben or other MS insiders shed some light on this? Enabling full screen should not be too difficult and would let viewers sit a bit further than 1 foot away. Note I am not asking for resolution increase, just scaling to full screen.
fiddlesticks 08-21-08, 01:21 PM I'd buy some gymasstics on Blu-ray...Nastia in HD :D
ChrisW6ATV 08-22-08, 01:52 AM The women's beach volleyball games would be nice to see without all the MPEG-2 compression artifacts.
deckerm 08-22-08, 09:13 AM NBC is advertising the opening ceremonies in SD DVD. I emailed them asking if a BD was in the works.

What's their e-mail address so the rest of us can request it? Part of me wants to ask NBC/Universal to put out a special HD DVD (even a combo) for old times sakes. :o
You'd better be sixteen........I'd venture the '08 Olympics will eventually hit HD media. When?, is the question.
Nastia Luiken is very much 18. ;) No worries...

mike171979 08-23-08, 04:05 PM I'd definitely pick a Blu Ray disc with the Opening Ceremonies, Highlights of events, and the Closing Ceremonies.
But I doubt we'll ever see one.
I recorded the Major Olympic Events in 1080i, OTA. Authored some HDDVD folders and burned them to DVD+R DL disks. Used VideoRedo to snip commercials and edit down to only the events I like. Play them back on my A2...look fantastic.
It is because of events like the Olympics that archiving HD is worth the trouble.
sperron 08-24-08, 06:26 AM Sadly, the local CBS and NBC affiliates have gotten together and are OTA broadcast both thier 1080i channels as one 1080i stream with a 1080i substream. Horrific macroblocking during any movement at all.

If you look at the FAQ and do a search for Blu-ray, they state they have no plans of releasing it in HD.
I e-mailed them anyway, stating that wasn't the answer I was looking for. :-)
DVD = no sale

The opening ceremony has been out on DVD for about a week, so their is hope it will appear on other optical media.

Nice. FiOS to HDTivo to PC HDD worked for me.

Wow, you replied to Rezzy's post 10 hours before his post!

I'll second your sentiments on the macroblocking.
Its really not worth the time to archive considering the poor picture quality here on Time Warner in So.Cal.
The Celtics Championship is coming out on BD, so maybe there is hope for the Olympics.
Glad to see that some of you were able to receive some good quality HD to archive.
