View Full Version : Inexpensive DVD Player that Plays Everything?
jerrodshook 08-16-08, 07:15 PM I'm looking for a cheap DVD player that will work with all kinds of discs. I've got an Oppo 971 in my theater that plays anything. But all my other players are picky about what they'll play. Problems come up with copied movies and stuff I burn off the TV on the DVD recorder. I've got a mish-mash of DVD-R, +R and +RL. The Oppo shines but my Sony, Panny and Phillips players are spotty at best.
Im looking for something to put in my kids playroom. Not worried at all about upconversion, DVD audio, SACD or anything like that. Something under $100 would be nice. Any suggestions?

being for the kids room, i would just get a ~$30? player from walmart, etc and go with that.
if it gets wrecked no big loss. just replace it.
they're also pretty good about playing just about everything. i know. i have one.
i keep it around for testing oddball discs.
edit-dont know about +r/+rl, tho.

I have a cheapo player made by Protron. It is a piece of junk and won't even play real discs with some minor scratches. That's why I want to replace it with something better than a $30 player....
WilliamZX11 08-17-08, 11:36 AM Vann's have the Pioneer DV-48AV for $99 plus free shipping. So far it has played everything I have thrown at it.
I would put that in your main rig, and give the Oppo to your kids.
Phillips 5990/5992 with Mediatek chipset (similar to Oppo 970H), region free, USB2.0, HDMI 720p/1080i/1080p, $40-60 (Costco, Bestbuy, Walmart), color controls in menu, pillarboxing ability for 4:3 tittles, and very compatible with all type of discs and media.

I own it. Nice machine.

Exactly what I was looking for. I can only find the 5990 at BB and Walmart, not the 5992. Is the 5992 newer and just not out in stores? Any major difference between them?
mickb54 08-17-08, 04:06 PM The 5992 seems to be the same player but is the warehouse store version for Costco -and perhaps other stores as well.
The 5990 and 5992 share the same owners manual and I have not seen any differences listed in the manual. I believe the only difference is that the 5992 has a little bit of silver trim around the front of the unit.
I got my 5990 at Walmart and I have been very happy with the picture, multi-format capability, and the USB port. Oh, and the jpeg display is great for slideshows :-)

Huey, would this be a better choice than the well respected 5982/37? I never picked up the 5982 but was still considering one refurbished. I'm using the Mitsubishi HD1000U projector, by the way, which I hear works well with the Phillips 5982.
So, is the 5990 the "new improved" version of the 5982, or is there still a reason to look for a 5982?
Thanks!
Edit - Nevermind Huey - I checked the DVP 5990 specific thread. Questions answered!
Kal Rubinson 08-20-08, 01:07 PM Pioneer DV-48AV. Plays everything, upconverts, HDMI, SACD, USB, etc. Going for $100 these days.

That is one I'd put in my theather... not in the kids room. Good suggestion though. Amazing that it's $100 at Vann's and $230 at Best Buy. I'd die to know how many of those BB has sold at that price because it's an Elite model.
I think I'm going to read more of the 5990 thread and probably go that route.
jerrodshook 08-24-08, 03:21 PM I picked up the 5990 today. Once I test it out a bit, I'll post something back here.
jerrodshook 08-24-08, 09:23 PM Tried it out and worked fine for Ridata DVD-R and TDK/Verbatim DVD+R DL. Haven't tried it on anything else yet, but works for me. Took a bit of time to load the DL discs so I was a bit nervous. It did it though.
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the tip Huey!!!!
How's the DVD player performance so far? I'm also looking for one that plays all sorts of disks, including lower grade/cheaper Dual Layer media and other +/-R disks.
Thanks!
5990/5992 is preferred over 5982 due to USB 2.0 which allows much smoother video playback from USB port. Otherwise they are identical.

So far this player is great. Haven't found a disc it won't play. I don't have it hooked up to a HDTV right now (a kids room doesn't need one) so anything I say will be useless since I'm using the composite video connection.
The DL media I use is Verbatim and TDK and both have been fine, no issues. Bought the media from NewEgg
