View Full Version : Any chance of future blu-ray players including HD-DVD support?
With so many HD-DVD's sold, anybody think that blu-ray players can incorporate HD-DVD support as an "extra feature support?" Lot's of people bought one of the current combo players as "backups" for when their HD-DVD player zonks out. I still haven't hoping this backwards support will be available on other players. Tohiba/HD-DVD sellers should make this effort to provide this type of capability to continue to support HD-DVD adopters and keep their software from beoming obsolete.

they 'can'.
but it'll be a cold day in hades first before they do. most likely.
only 'the shadow' knows for sure.;)
Mr. Lizardo 08-16-08, 11:23 PM Nope
bradavon 08-17-08, 06:57 AM No.
The format is dead, only Toshiba, LG and Samsung (the Venturer was a Toshiba clone) ever supported it hardware wise and there's no way they'll go back now. It's too costly for little gain.
Denon have talked about supporting HD-DVD in future BD Players but I seriously doubt they ever will. They are releasing a BD Player with DVD-A and SACD support though. I guess that's much cheaper to produce and those formats aren't technically dead, just slowly dying.
Buy the LG BH200/Samsung BD-UP5000 or get two Players while you still can buy HD-DVD Players.
No.

DenonJeff confirmed the HDDVD support in this player has been canned in an interview. The main reason SACD/DVD-A are supported is they dont need any change to the laser assemby (Use DVD laser) where as HDDVD needs another laser and is much more complex on the software side too.
bradavon 08-17-08, 09:17 AM Thanks Krobar. Good point about SACD/DVD-A support. Both are technically DVD5 or DVD9s.
I think as technology progresses it should be cheaper and easier to implement. I think the real reson they may not is that it forces people to buy the same movies again in another format. It would be a stand up thing for Toshiba to offer the chipset/support to some vendors to support all the users that bought into its "failed" technology. Yahoo just got out of DRM music and as a servic to its loyal customers, they are offering refunds on all DRM protected music. When toshiba bailed they should have also set something up for their customers in their write down of HD-DVD losses.

In case you haven't noticed, Toshiba and crew haven't 100% given up just yet.

Richard Paul 08-17-08, 07:07 PM With so many HD-DVD's sold, anybody think that blu-ray players can incorporate HD-DVD support as an "extra feature support?"I think that is unlikely considering the additional costs for hardware, software, and royalties.
Richard Paul 08-17-08, 07:17 PM What does that link show? :confused:It is a link to a thread about a red laser HD DVD format (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1045523) that the DVD Forum has recently approved. There is no evidence that it is a pre-recorded video format though there is plenty of optimistic speculation from posters who are hoping for that.
bradavon 08-18-08, 11:14 AM Thanks.
That's not HD-DVD by the sounds of it but yet another format. The Chinese came up with their own red laser HD format, because that's what we all need.
seggers 08-18-08, 11:45 AM I doubt it. A better way may be to use a HTPC and sw to read the HD DVD.
After all, it's still a blue laser.
Well, that's what I'm thinking of doing if my new TV (not ordered yet) will accept 1080 from my PC. If it can, bye bye A35....
Seggers
I actually have the XBox HD-DVD player on the PC. Worse comes to worse, I'll rip the HD-DVD's and play them off a hard drive. Just trying to stay legit...
davcole 08-18-08, 12:37 PM Should Toshiba ever support BD i'm sure they'll have the option of HD DVD support.

Personally I see given time we'll see a BD Player from Toshiba but it won't support HD-DVD. They lost a packet when they pulled out of HD-DVD.

Indeed brad I agree with you, even if Toshiba eventually supports Blu-ray I HIGHLY doubt that they would incorporate HD DVD playback....IMO what we have out now is what there is, player will last long enough to play your movies, but once your player dies youll either have to get something off of ebay or replace your HD DVDs....
Or resort to illegal means and rip the HD-DVD's. Silly that they should shrig off all their early adopters and supporters to go this route.

Doesn't HDDVD support managed copy?
That was part of their formal spec, but I don;t think it was ever implemented?!
Richard Paul 08-22-08, 07:46 PM Doesn't HDDVD support managed copy?AACS was supposedly going to add support for managed copy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Access_Content_System#Managed_Copy) but the only thing I have heard for over 2 years is that they are still working on it.

Quite the contrary: they made a very rewarding secret deal with Sony - do you remember when right when the demise of HD DVD as a format arrived came the news about Sony is selling the Cell-mfr'ing plant (PS3's CPU) to Toshiba?
What a coincidence, huh?

They will never do it unless HD DL takes off so big time it will force them.
Remember, it's the same sneaky, uninhibited mob Valenti used to lead.
allargon 08-27-08, 01:53 AM I would say there's a very good chance especially when companies are making really strange combos.
Who asked for this? Seriously, transferring VHS to DVD is understandable. There is zero benefit of transferring VHS to Blu-Ray (well except on the BH200--then it won't stretch the 4:3 material).

http://gizmodo.com/5041206/panasonics-dmr+br630v-blu+ray-disc-recorder-does-vhs-tapes-too
A Blu-ray disc recorder and a VHS video tape machine may seem unlikely bedfellows, but that hasn't stopped Panasonic from wrapping them up together in the same box for the DMR-BR630V. The 630V can write BDRs at six times speed, has digital and analog tuners, new second-gen MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 encoder chips as well as all the standard HDMI and analog connections and Panasonic's Viera link for device interconnectivity. It also records to DVD. There's even a 320GB hard drive inside, capable of recording video and later letting you dub it onto BDR or VHS. You'll have to wait until October 1st for its Japanese release, though, if you're absolutely desperate to get your collection of low-res, blurry Friends VHS tapes safely transferred onto spiffy high-res BDRs. And it'll cost you around $1,450 for the privilege.
vinnie97 08-27-08, 02:21 AM Those combos include formats that were all hugely successful OR are still afloat. HD DVD was killed in under 2 years.
jedi.master.dre 08-27-08, 02:40 AM I hope that LG, Samsung and eventually Toshiba would make combo players. Would it not be like DVD-R DVD+R DIVx etc being on almost all current SD DVD players?;)
bradavon 08-27-08, 04:27 PM They're BD Recorders and VCRs in one, so you can use both not so you can transfer VHS tapes to BD. It just saves you having two units.
Most VCR/DVD Combos have Macrovision.

No. The ability to add DVD+, DVD- and DivX is signifantly simpler.
Samsung have gone on record saying they're no longer supporting Combos and LG releasing a BD only Player says it all.

Exactly! VHS is still more popular world-wide than HD-DVD managed to be in the 2 years it survived.

Technically speaking... VHS is probably still more popular world-wide than Blu ray is right now as well.
360_4_EVER! 08-27-08, 09:33 PM And material-wise, it will be a long time before Blu catches VHS...if ever.
Are their even as many disks on Blu as on Red yet? Seems like maybe they're about even now...

According to thedigitalbits there are more than 200 BR vs HD DVDs.....
TOTAL BLU-RAY DISC TITLES (8/8/08 - DVD Release Report): 642/180*
TOTAL HD-DVD TITLES (FINAL FORMAT TALLY as of 7/4/08 - DVD Release Report): 429/0*
360_4_EVER! 08-28-08, 08:30 AM I think that 429 number is low. A list (http://www.hddvdstats.com/) I found that was accurate in February shows 436, but it doesn't include imports I have in my collection--for example, The Prestige and Fantastic Four. I'm thinking the real number worldwide is right around 600 and some.
Actually, there are a few people around now who have 'full collections' who could probably tell us for sure.:)
allargon 08-28-08, 10:53 AM HD DVD Stats isn't that accurate. (They don't even list the nearly 100 adult HD DVD titles.)
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=14440782#post14440782
is a much more accurate list. The total number of titles is near 1000. Several people here on AVS own more than 439 unique titles.
360_4_EVER! 08-28-08, 01:31 PM Hey, allargon, thanks for the clarification. I thought the 400 number was too small. Now you got me wondering what the current list of BR titles is...?

TDB is completely off, it's ridiculously low. Back in January I read ~800 titles 'til date.

Was just a response to say that Blu-ray HAS surpassed HD DVD.....It was implied in the post I quoted that Blu-ray might have not yet "reached" HD DVD as far as titles released go...I usually try to stay away from the HD DVD vs Blu-ray mess I am so sick and tired of it....
360_4_EVER! 08-28-08, 09:24 PM Sorry, I wasn't trying to dig up a mess either. I just remembered reading something recently that said 600-some titles for BR. I wondered if that was more than what HD DVD had or not. Regardless, together they are still a far cry from VHS or DVD.
Don Borvio 08-30-08, 07:15 PM I think this is totally possible. I have one reason: HDCD. Wasn't very popular but still had some support in receivers and players, and it did require extra hardware.

Indeed. The same can be said of Nuon. One can still buy "Nuon Enhanced" DVD Players for all 8 Nuon games ever released. It requires special hardware as well and for a massive 8 title pay-off, not 18, not 80 and definitely not the 800+ that HD DVD has to offer.
The HD DVD library is established and was never as CP/DRM happy as BD so there would be no need to release new firmware for HD DVD once there is an established baseline to work from. Most of it would depend on the hardware costs and complexity. Yes right now a single-chip solution would be expensive and would demand a great deal of work. Still as the hardware and software in BD players gets more powerful and more sophisticated the idea of making BD players that can also play HD DVDs as a value added option becomes much more appealing for manufacturers.
bradavon 09-12-08, 07:32 AM I remember Nuon. I saw a Samsung DVD Player article about it. I never knew any hardware actually got released though.

Yep. Samsung released at least two Nuon enhanced DVD Player in the US and a couple in Europe as well. There were also players by Toshiba and RCA plus it was a feature in Motorola's Streamaster 5000 "Digital DNA" set-top box.
