I purchase a Polk DSW micro pro 4000 (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-HZhMFTKPYVk/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?I=107DSW4000)to go along with my eD speakers that I received on Friday. I had an order placed for a a7s-450 to complete the 5.1 but canceled the order due to the boss (wife) and the large foot print.
The polk has been performing very good for my room setup. Even though it's small size its handling my room setup (over 5000sq+ 2 story room) very great!
However, the price of this subwoofer is pretty expensive and I will need to return it. I was wondering how the following subs should compare to the sound that I'm getting out of the polk micropro 4000:
SVS 20-39 PC-Plus (http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-cyl-plpow2.cfm)
http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-sb12plus.cfm
Velodyne SPL-1200R (http://www.digitalcraze.com/Details.asp?Source=Froogle&ProductID=309)
Notice all of the subs above are around the 16" foot print. I to the save as much space as possible. Any other recommendations under the $1100 range please let me know.

Just like cars there is no replacement for displacment. Its all well and good that companies have lots of tricks to get bass from little cubes but for $ a cylinder SUb is going to give you more, deeper cleaner bass. Its like having big box performance with a small sub footprint. As long as the wife simply wants small footprint and doesn't care about a 4 foot tall black tube in the room go with the SVS hands down.

shouldn't anything with a small footprint have a small base by definition?

I think i will give the cylinder a shot. The polk seems to have a 1200watt RMS amp and the 20-39 only has a 525watt amp?
What was your wife's objection to the Polk? It's a nice looking sub and its size is not very large (about the same footprint as the SVS). I don't care for the Volume UP/DOWN buttons (would prefer a dial), but that's minor and the remote minimizes the use of the buttons. It also includes some form of room comp and auto Eq. The 12V trigger is also a good feature. Looks like a very nice package. It is a little pricey, but you have to pay for the features if you use them or not. I don't recall anyone here giving comments on this sub.

I believe he didn't like the price?
I see. The wife didn't like the eD.

Getting bass out of little tiny boxes with small/er drivers requires a lot more power. This is likley part of the reason these small Subs are so expensive. High powered amps are more expensive than building a biogger enclosure and passive radiators are more expensive than ports.

I have a CS Ultra, 16" foot print 40" tall and this thing BANGS. I bought it used for 350.00. The only problem, if you can call it that, is that it requires an external amp. I used an Outlaw Audio M2200 mono block that runs at 300 watts, and it still cranks out some midrange to low low notes. The amp power is a big factor in how the sub performs, but its the driver and the enclosure that really makes them shine. Id definitely go with the SVS. BTW sub and amp total cost me 550.00 USD. There is a fellow selling his CS Ultra on here for around 575, check the classified ads. Good luck to you on your quest. Cheers to BASS..

The Velodyne SPL-1200R is going to perform similarly to that Polk you bought, but if you didn't like the price of the MicroPro 4000 - you're certainly not going to like the Velodyne SPL-1200R. Both are in the same ballpark price-wise.
If money is an issue, your wife is going to have to deal with a bigger more unsightly subwoofer in the room to save a few bucks and get the same or better performance.
Don't let the watts fool you either - a 525W properly designed cylinder sub will keep up with a 1200W sealed mini-box sub. Some of that power in the mini-box is wasted overcoming static air pressure and moving the rubber in those extremely thick surrounds they use in the woofers. I'm not saying the micro-subs are better or worse, but I am saying the technology is different enough that you can't compare the two designs based on power output alone.
