View Full Version : Sub in an apartment vs a townhouse
natemu06 08-17-08, 11:48 PM Currently live in an apartment so I can't turn it up too loud but I am planning on moving soon. Looking at either a house or townhouse. Current apartment has people above and below me and I know anything loud is heard pretty easily. I was wondering how the sound would transmit to an adjacent townhouse. I would imagine it wouldn't be nearly as loud as above or below but does anyone have any experience with this. I am probably going to get the MFW-15 but would this be overkill?
King Titus 08-18-08, 09:09 AM A Block townhome, helps a lot (all 3 stories). I own both wood and Block townhomes.
Wood is horrible for any sounds.
A sub will even go through block walls, but you have a chance of neighbors not mentioning it.
Try to get an end unit!

I just sold my townhome. I was using a Paradigm PDR12, and I had to tame it down a bit. Over 4 years, I never had one complaint, but I never did use the sub to its full potential. I had to google "MFW-15" as I am not familiar with it, but to me, it sounds like overkill. My Paradigm had a smaller amp, and I'm only assuming, less output in the lower frequencies.
Also keep in mind, not all townhomes have the same contruction on the adjacent walls. Mine was double thick with some/little dead air between the 2 walls. But then again, It takes a lot to stop those lower frequencies from traveling through walls.
Jason Priestley 08-18-08, 09:34 AM Live in a townhouse built in the 80's and live in an end unit. After two years, neighbor finally complained yesterday. Was playing rock band at 9pm at the bass level on one of the songs was a bit loud. I think the townhouse is made of cheap materials as he said that it was shaking the place a bit (paradigm). I had to lower the bass to a less thumping level but want to figure out how to still enjoy the system without moving out (which won't be for another year or two until I finish my MBA).
natemu06 08-18-08, 10:08 AM I was also curious about having an end unit and a gap between the next neighbor on the other side. One we were looking at had about a 5 foot gap between the two townhomes and I was wondering if the sound would still be bothersome to them?
Stereodude 08-18-08, 10:52 AM I'd steer clear of any situation where you share adjacent walls with someone else if you want to enjoy your bass and music loudly.
rlj5242 08-18-08, 01:32 PM One we were looking at had about a 5 foot gap between the two townhomes and I was wondering if the sound would still be bothersome to them? After my neighbor came over for a demo of my home theater he said "This is where I hear the bass coming from sometimes. I thought it was a car parked in someone's driveway."
There is about 120 feet between houses and both are brick construction. The subs are a pair of TC Sounds 15" TC-3000 driven by a pro amp. EQed flat to 17hz.

I own a townhouse and have my sub next to the adjacent wall and run some fairly bass heavy movies. My neighbors haven't complained once. My sub is only a Bic H100 and I keep mine at a sane level, though, so if you're a basshead you might want a shack in Montana to be safe. ;)
We're in a row of three, and all three of us have HT setups. I never hear them.
Might depend on what your building is made of.
If there is separation between the buildings, your neighbors will only hear your system. And that is only if it is quiet in their house. I have been playing movies, quite loud, and gone outside. I can hear the sub, but not to a disturbing level. This is not to say you won't have a neighbor that will complain if they hear any sound they don't make themselves. Then you just have to decide if you want to get along with them or not. I find teen's car systems, barking dogs, and crying babies to be more annoying.
Wow I was just talking about this with a friend who own a house, he has two Velodyne 12" woofers.
He has been getting complains from his neighbor lately, well it's more of an passive aggressive kinda of complains( Like you sure was enjoying that sound system at 10 O'clock at night there neighbor )
I know you have to be all respectful and all, but that's the whole point you bought a 3.5K house for:confused:.I mean if you can't blast your system at your own domain where can you blast your molar extracting low frequencies at.
You wait until your wifey and kiddies are out shopping, at your expense you pull out a crappy movie like Pulse sit through it all to get your nasal cavities clean, when at a faint distance you here a knock! You're like crap the family is back so soon??? That 300 hundred didn't go so far!
You open the door and it's Sam your next door neighbor wearing a robe and a pissed off look on his face:(
So what a basshead to do!
Good luck guys.

techtvman 08-18-08, 04:01 PM i did the same thing with my single mfw-15, granted it was 11:30 at night and the neighbors windows were open and i only had one window open just a bit in the upstairs, sub is located on main ground floor, This is house to house, no townhome or apt, and his house is a bit closer to mine than normal but still wouldnt have thought it would do that
