Anyone have any recommendations on good "Next-gen" RPGs for PS3 or 360? I recently quit WoW and am looking for a good console experience.

Thanks.

I'm not a huge RPG fan and I'm not sure I would classify it as a full RPG, but Folklore is a great game on the PS3.

Lost Odyssey for the 360 is great. I have Blue Dragon for the 360 as well, haven't played it much but it is supposed to be pretty good as well. These are both Japanese turn-based RPGs however. I'm not sure if that is what you're looking for.

Thanks for the responses. I'm rent folklore and lost oddesy to see if I like them. I don't know how I missed the release of folklore!

I played oblivion for a few days before I realized that the enemies levels scale with yours. For my RPGs, I like being able to level your guys if you are facing a tough challenge... Ala final fantasy.

I'm really surprised that there aren't more RPGs for these platforms. It's actually kind of ridiculous.

RPG's take a long time to develope. Be patient. I bet in the next 6mo-1year, we will see a plenty.

If you know what you are doing in Oblivion, the fact that monsters also level up will not affect your performance at all. In fact at higher levels you will be pretty overpowered.

The downside is that if you don't know what you are doing or you choose poorly, you end up with a character who can get his/her ass kicked by every random bandit on the road.

square will be releasing its first rpg, Infinite Undiscovery next month, which should be pretty decent. I plan on playing through Fallout3, Fable II and The last Remnant which should all be out in time for the hollidays

I'm looking forward to Valkyria Chronicles coming in November of this year for the PS3.

Also looking forward to White Knight Chronicles which is coming out in Japan at the end of the year (if it hasn't been delayed).

I saw it mentioned at least once already, but I'd also recommend Mass Effect for the 360. My 360 gave up the ghost when I was about half-way through, and that broke my heart.

Can't wait for Fallout 3 and Fable 2, though I probably won't have time to play either of them. :P

These plus Oblivion would be the best in a transition from WOW imo. Fallout 3 is a must buy for me, possible GOTY from the sound of the hype. If i can ever afford a 360 Fable 2 will be the first game i get, loved the first one. I actually just went back to playing wow, shame on me.

I remember in the early days of Oblivion how there were guides for making "anti-classes". These were charcters who had as their 10 core skills things you DIDN'T want to focus on. The idea being you leveled up non-core skills by playing and only actually leveled your character by specifically using non-desired skills.

For example, if you wanted to make a fighter, you picked MAGIC skills as your 10 core ones. Then you played as a fighter, only using your anemic magic skills when you wanted to level up. This allowed you to control the rate of advancement a bit more easily.

I just played with the difficulty slider bar if/when I felt I was no longer enjoying the challenge. I think they went a bit overboard with the levelling. I think there is an important balance between feeling challenged but occasionally getting to totally whup ass on guys you previously had trouble with.

I just picked up Blue Dragon for $16.99 for 360. Very attractive game so far. I used to hate these types of games (thought they always looked boring and hated the idea of "the computer deciding who wins") but have found myself suddenly interested in them and wanting to play them. Must be from getting older or something! :) I'm playing FF7 (since they say it's the best) on PSP and BD now.

If you're going to play Oblivion, I suggest picking it up for PC. There are some great mods that enhance the interface and standard gameplay, including one to remove the level scaling.

Fallout 3
Valkryia Chronicles
Disgaea 3

And all the stuff mentioned above.

I'm not even a big RPG fan and even I know there's plenty of stuff to choose from right now in the genre.

Forget Infinite Undiscovery on the 360. Not really that good of game. Currently playing it and just can't seem to get into it. Read the reviews and they will tell you why the game is a rental at best. I am 12 hours into it on the 2nd disk and decided to return it to BB. If you want something recent, try the Tales game on the 360. The Tales games are a little different than most and are unique but they aren't bad. Played it on the 360 and will go back to it shortly to finish up. Be warned, the Tales games are known to have you log 80+ hours.

Lost Odessey was one of the toughest RPG's I played in years, yet it was one of the best. I think I logged 72 hours, but the story will keep you going and wanting more.

Blue Dragon was good and can't be beat for under $20. Eternal Sonata was OK, but really repetitive. Finished both. Enchant Arms isn't the worst game in the world, actually the cinematics are pretty cool, so if you can pick this up for under $20, it should be worth it.

Keep in mind that the games above are all JRPG's. I am not a real RPG (like Oblivion) fan, although I did play it for about 10+ hours. I seem to like RPG's that have good Cinematics over the typical RPG that you run and grind, well except Diablo which I still play here and there.

I just got Folklore from Goozex, what an underrated gem this is! Slick visuals and design, interesting gameplay mechanics, intriguing story so far... I'm loving it.

If you like strategy RPGs, Disgaea 3 is a ridiculously deep game.

Valkyria Chronicles looks pretty great so far, so keep an eye on that.

ok, i've finally started folklore and have been playing it quite a bit recently... it's got a very good story with 2 different versions as you play as a reporter or the main girl.
i'd say it's more of an adventure game with an rpg feel to it, but it's pretty linear.
also it has the single best usage of the sixaxis for motion control of any game. without giving too much away, it's quite brilliant how they implemented it into the game.

I don't think you need to worry about spoilers for that... it's in the demo :)

Explanation: Your attacks are all the souls ('IDs') of enemies ('folk') that you fight in the game. You hit the folk with attacks based on their weaknesses to 'pop' their ID out of their body. Once that happens you use this beam-thing to latch onto the ID, and you jerk the controller up to 'rip' the ID out of the body. It's wicked, and feels very satisfying even 10 hours into the game. Later folks require different actions, like shaking the ID from side to side. It's a lot of fun. You can power up your attacks/IDs by meeting different criteria for them; you can decrease the magic used, extend an attack combo, etc. It's kind of like Aria of Sorrow for the DS in that regard. Or that's what it reminds me of, anyway.

Spectral Force 3, Operation Darkness and Two Worlds seem to be the only RPG's not mentioned.

I have only played Two Worlds, which is a poor attempt at an Oblivion-esque game, which while horrible in many ways is playable. Operation Darkness, judging by the reviews, may be the lowest rated game on the 360; while Spectral Force 3 seems to be liked by a few...

Oblivion is the best, but I am playing Lost Odyssey and it is growing on me the farther I get into it...

Sacred 2 is coming out soon...it's a must buy, a bit action oriented though...

Yep, one of my favorite games on the PS3. Just started to play it again after a long hiatus. Brilliant design, imaginative gameplay and a pretty cool story. Looks fantastic too. I really like the music as well.

On a side note, re: Goozex. I just signed up and got a request to trade a game to a user in Puerto Rico. Pretty high rating but a lot of canceled transactions. Should I do it or roll back in to the queue?

Purchased Folklore on day 1 and after weeks of playing, decided it wasn't for me. The visuals are nice and the usuage of the motion (lifting up and down) was great, but I just couldn't get into it. For some reason, it seemed to be missing something.

Anyways, this probably wasn't my type of RPG. Haven't tried Two Worlds but I hear it is horrible. If it makes it into the $10 bin, I will get it.

Anyone care to describe what the play style of Folklore is? Is it more of a JRPG or C/Western RPG? Also how is the fighting - is it turn based or real time?

Real time fighting, which can get hard at times when you get swarmed.

It really isn't a roll playing game. There is no leveling up. You do not get any powers or abilities or increase stats. You can "level up" your IDs by absorbing more of the same, which just gives them more damage. You basically run around, kill creatures by ripping out their IDs with the controller. There is nothing else involved. Bosses can only be killed by using the right ID at the right time and are usually invulnerable to other IDs you have.

Thanks for this information, very helpful. Based on your description it really sounds more or less like a "hack and slash" style game with a couple gimmicks? Is that accurate?

don't take one person's negative opinion to put things into perspective...

it's an adventure game with a good story that many people tried to pass off as an RPG. there's nothing rpg about it. but the way the 2 characters storys unfold is pretty neat and there are some quasi-epic boss battles. and it does use the 6axis motion control really well.

Oh don't get me wrong. I didn't mean "hack and slash" in a negative context. The same phrase could be used to describe the GoW series which I love and also has many epic moments. I was just more or less trying to assess the game mechanics. I have heard many positive reviews regarding the story line. I was just trying to "visualize" the game play in my head if that makes any sense.

Check the demo; best way to visualize the gameplay :) Although keep in mind the game worlds get much different from the world in the demo.

If you want to play new release RPGs, get a DS. It has the best RPGs out there by far. The only RPG I have actually enjoyed a lot on the new consoles is Mass Effect and even that game was pretty annoying in a lot of ways. Hopefully Valkyria Chronicles is good, though. I have about zero hope for Last Remnant.

The combat is like Zelda. Except, more boring. At least in my opinion.

It's worth trying, though. The story seemed cool and the art design and monster design are off the scale awesome. I imagine the game has a very dedicated audience, even if its small. It's that type of game.

Hack and slash with a good story. Does get a little old playing the exact same area twice (every area has to be played twice if you want to advance the story).

With that said, the game is still stunning. It is addictive ripping out IDs, graphics are top notch. Very enjoyable game. Just do not go into it thinking it is an RPG. Download the playable demo. There are two. One starts at the beginning of the game. The other puts you into the action in the netherworld and shows the combat system.

Chinese version is in English, so whether or not they do, its their loss IMO. They could release that version tomorrow here in this country, just Babelfish the manual or something.

Hopefully you will get your copy soon...

The Chinese version of DS comes with a small insert with the basics in English and the manual is all Chinese. I think the game detects if your ps3 is English and then all menus and voice acting are in English. Completely playable. It doesn't even seem like an import. There is more and more game information available in English for DS around the web. When you get stuck, a quick google should help you out.

I have been playing this for a few weeks now. There is a steep learning curve at first, but if you keep at it and this is your type of game, you will not be disappointed. It kind of has that surreal King's Field vibe (it's also created by FROM SOFTWARE) and the online co-op is pretty fun. It is a very unique game and I do not regret paying a little extra to import.
