I just picked up a 80 gig for $399. at B.B., it says it does NOT play PS2 games? I thought only the 40 gig didn't have B/C? (I meant without in the title Doh!)

Let the confusion begin....The 40G/6A/NO PS2 BC has been discontinued and has been replaced by the 80G/DS3/NO PS2 BC for $399. Then there is also the 80G/DS3/PS2 BC Metal Gear package on the shelves for $499.

The old 80 gig version had BC, the new 80 gig version doesn't have BC.

Yes, it is very confusing.

Maybe it's the newest 80GB? How many USB ports does it have?

The current 40 and 80GB scues are being replaced with a single 80GB PS3 with 40GB features.

Where did you pick THAT up? I heard that they new 80gb SKU wasn't going to be released until September!!!

The 80gb for $399 is the new Core bundle, and replaces the 40GB Core system. It should have 2 USB ports and no memory card reading slots. It should be the same as the 40GB system but with an 80GB hard drive. If you want the backwards compatibility, I suggest you return that unit and get one of the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundles before they are all gone (there should be no more shipping from Sony). These are the last of the PS3s that are backwards compatible with PS2 games.

If you don't mind my asking, does it say anywhere on the unit or the box how many watts of power it draws? I am trying to figure out if the 80GB unit uses the new graphics card or not.

Congrats on your new PS3!

The 80 gig PS3 you just bought are the ones that are replacing the 40 gig PS3s. Same exact system but with just an extra 40 gigs.

It has been posted that so far, the only 65 nm PS3 is the 40 gig version.

It has been posted that so far, the only 65 nm PS3 is the 40 gig version.

The 40gb has a 65 nm cell processor and a 90 nm graphics processor. The old 80 gb unit (including MGS4) has both processors at 90 nm. Since Sony stated that they were releasing the 65 nm this fall, so speculation has been that the new SKU might have it.

Sonystyle.com has the new 80GB PS3 for pre-order. Here's what's listed on their site:

PLAYSTATION®3 (80GB)
PS398013

Pre-sale item available on or about 09/01/2008. We will notify you by email. Your account will be billed when product ships.

OP, can you post a pic of your PS3...I too am curious if this is the new SKU.

It has 2 USB ports, it came with a Dual Shock 3, I'll try to post some pics tonight. It feels ALOT lighter than my 60 gig. This thing is super quiet though, I had it on for about 5 hours downloading and I didn't hear a thing, my 60 gig's fan will usually kick in after an hour.

Yep, that is the new 80GB model. It is the same chipset (meaning 65nm) as the old 40GB. There will be some initial confusion, but I'm glad Sony is now going with only one SKU. Good for those that got the BC enabled PS3s while they could.

Kind of a bummer, I thought I was getting the B/C 80 gig for $399. LOL. I had to say goodbye to my 60 gig though, it kept locking up on me, constantly freezing up. I had the replacement plan through B.B., it hurt real bad trading that in for the 80 gig. It still bugs me now.

08-18-08, 05:44 PM
Hrm, you think they would have given you an old 80gig with B/C as a replacement instead of a new one that's not supposed to be released yet. Unless all they had in stock was the 40gigs.. Then I guess that's the closest you can get.

RY35AN
08-18-08, 06:26 PM
It was all they had left, they only had 2 80 gigs. I didn't think it was a big deal since they 80's had limited B/C, but when I got home I started reading the contents and well... it's not too big of a deal since I don't play PS2 games though, and I got a $200.00gift card for the difference.

They give you your origial purchase price, including tax, back in store credit to use on whatever you like. If your $500 PS3 breaks and you bring it back to BB you can walk out with a $400 PS3 + $100 credit, a $250 Wii + $250 credit, $500 towards a new TV, etc. I fully plan on bringing my PS3 back to BB at the end of my 2 year term and getting the latest and greatest package that will likely be priced around the $250 mark and getting $250 worth of Bluray & PS3 games with the difference. If you ont use it you lose it...

RY35AN

Mr. Abulia
08-18-08, 10:42 PM
280 W is what we're looking for, although I'm not sure if that is the consumption of the system or just what the power supply is rated to. Still, it might help... 40gb owners, is this the same as what you have, or different?

(And yeah, 6 kg is the weight :P )

OT... but who cares about BC? Is your PS2 broken? The only PS2 game I would play at this point would be my old GH's... which can't be played on the ps3 anyway... I'm just surprised to read how important BC is to a lot of people... JMO

I'm in the same boat, I never had a PS2, I skipped that generation of consoles entirely, so I was able to pick up a ton of titles on the cheap that I still play. Probably wouldn't have got the PS3 if it wasn't for this because when I got the system I didn't have much money left over for games, nor were there many must have PS3 titles that I wanted.

I also borrow games left and right and I'm the only one with a PS3 everyone else has 2's.

So backwards compatibility is very much used in my house

It was (and still is) important to me. I have a sizable stack of PS2 games that I can now play in near HD as well as having the ability to have my dad play Ford Racing or NFS on PS2 whilst I play Motor Storm or vice-versa. I can't justify $400 without BC. I'm not sure I could justify $300. Since I don't have the inclination to blow $60 on a game, that means I have to wait for sales or until they get cheaper before I make a purchase. Being able to play my PS2 games in near HD makes the waiting much easier.

I find it even more surprising how people cannot see why BC is important to some people. Whats so hard to understand that not everyone had a PS2, not all of them have lasted forever and the ability to get rid of an extra component, controllers and even more wires you can do without.

This is sort of OT but I can't help but wonder, with the power the PS3 has, if it couldn't down the road add emulation via software downloads.. or something like bleemcast..

I'd *love* to see dreamcast compatibility in addition to PS2.. I'd shell out some decent coin for it too...

I purposely bought a BC 60GB unit because I like to revisit some of my favorites like God of War and Manhunt. Otherwise I would proabably have gone out and gotten one of these "whisper quiet" 40 or 80GB units and put a larger hard drive into it. The option to do so is the only reason it's important. Considering how many PS2 games there are out there and how cheaply you can find them, they make great bargain bin pick ups to kill time during slow release periods.

SHENMUE ON MY PS3 WOULD BE THE OPPOSITE OF FAIL.

Sorry for the caps but I'd give my firends left nut for some good Sega classics on the PSN store.

Back OT though you would have to think Sony is closing in on limited software BC with PS2 if they're going to drop production of the hardware versions...

It's a dull silver, not the chrome from the 60 gig. It feels "cheaper" I haven't seen a 40 gig yet so I can't say if it's identical to that. I was wondering if they would add some type of B/C through a firmware update some time down the line also. It does play the PSone games though.

I think BC was just a little nugget to justify the $600 tag the PS3 started out with. There was talk of adding BC capabilities via updates at a later date. Who the hell can predict anything with this company. They do after all still produce, and sell quite a few, PS2's.

Quick question on the BB extended warranty. I have it on my 40GB I bought last year nothings wrong with it but it sometimes locks up. Can I return it to get the new 80GB version or get store credit for a new TV? I paid an additional $80 for the extended warranty.

Yes. If you read the fine print it says you will get store credit for the full purchase price good towards anything in stock, online, etc. But once you "cash-in" with your warranty it is done and gone. You would have to purchase another PRP (product replacemnet plan) with whatever you buy with the credit. So if your PS3 breaks you can bring it in to BB and get $400-$500 in store credit. If you choose to use it to take another PS3 home you will need to purchase another PRP if you'll want the same coverage on the new unit. It is not so much a warranty in that regard.

Same thing if you wanted to use that credit to buy a TV or anything else they sell....

That is the question of the hour! We know that it has a 280 w power supply, but I'm not sure what the exact power draw of it is. And as far as I know, none of the gadget sites have gotten their hands on one to do a thorough check.

The 65nm graphics chip will not affect PQ on BR's in any way, shape or form. It's the same processor on a shrunken die.

The 80gb for $399 is backwards compatible for PS1 games. It is NOT backwards compatible for PS2 games. Confused yet?
