I've been wanting to upgrade for awhile and am wondering if it's a good time to do so or should is there a good reason I should wait longer? Seems I've read some people are not happy with the current models available.

I know it's only $200, but that's a lot of donuts.

Just like any CE technology out there, there are bound to be bad units that sour people. I've had my HR20-700 HD-DVR for about a year and have had no problems. Before that, I had the HR10-250, which served me well, too. I preferred the tivo interface of the 10-250, especially the "automatic record" feature of two channels, so you could flip back and forth live, but rewind each program as needed. This is the only thing that the 20-700 doesn't do that I miss. I like, and use, the network capabilities of the 20-700 to stream music/photos from my network to the TV. I also like that I have the ability to connect an eSATA external HDD to get more storage (you can only use the internal HDD or an external HDD; you can't use both at the same time).

If you've never had a DVR, now's as good a time as ever.

I have an SD dvr now, so I am well aware of the joys of dvr's! Not sure I could go without one anymore.

But if no one can come up with a good reason to not wait any longer then perhaps I need to go ahead and upgrade. I was making sure there wasn't something I wasn't aware of like a new model coming out soon. Also read a review on circuit city saying something about the tuners not being up to par and recommended waiting for a newer model.

I did notice that the hr22 is on best buy and has a lot more hard drive. Sweet.

Do you use OTA for locals. If so you will need the AM-21 for OTA reception. It's not that expensive and plugs into the HR-21 very easily via USB.

The way you word that, people might think the HR20/21s can't record 2 channels at once, which they can. The TiVos have dual live buffers, which allow you to pause one tuner up to the half hour buffer while watching the other tuner and, as you said, switch back and forth between the two. I only used it when I had NFL Sunday Ticket.

Fire Man, do you have a HDTV? If so, then yes, it's well worth it to invest in a HD DVR. I realize $200 is a chunk of change, but when the alternative is watching SD on a HDTV, it's well worth it. If you don't have a HDTV and don't plan on getting one any time soon, then no, it's not worth it for just the expanded SD recording time. Why? Because you have to pay the $9.99/mo. HD Access fee and really that's pointless on a SDTV. If you have a D-TiVo and feel comfortable opening up a PC, then there are plenty of ways to upgrade to a higher capacity hard drive.

I do have an HD tv now. Right now I have two D tv receivers, one HD and one dvr. Looking to combine them.

I live just outside of good OTA signal so I use D tv for local. So not too concerned about not being able to hook up an OTA antenna.

I think I'll go with the D tv HD DVR. I don't have a desktop comp so going with a PC DVR isn't an option.

Thanks for the advice!
