Show To Be Aired in HD For the First Time In Daytime

CBS's THE PRICE IS RIGHT, television's longest-running game show, with host Drew Carey, will have its 37th season premiere Monday, Sept. 22 (11:00 AM-12:00 Noon, ET; 10:00-11:00 AM, PT), on the CBS Television Network.

The new season will find some of Price's classic games updated and more money to be won, as well as a brand-new game added to the lineup. In addition, the set has been given a fresher look, and for the first time in daytime, the show will be aired in HD.

This season is the first time the money in the daytime bonus spin on The Wheel has increased since the bonus spin was introduced nearly 30 years ago. After first hitting $1 on the Wheel (and winning $1,000), the contestant can win $25,000 (up from $10,000) on a bonus spin if he lands on the $1 spot again. And if he lands on one of the green spaces instead of the $1 spot during the bonus spin, he could win $10,000 (up from $5,000).

In addition to the bonus spin increases, classic THE PRICE IS RIGHT games "Punch-a-Bunch" and "Check Game" are updated with bigger prizes to give away.

The new game, called "Gas Money," will makes its debut in the season premiere. To win a car and up to $10,000, the contestant must guess the actual retail price of the car from among five potential prices, with the chance to accumulate cash along the way.

THE PRICE IS RIGHT, the longest-running game show in television history, is hosted by Drew Carey. Produced by FremantleMedia North America, THE PRICE IS RIGHT is broadcast weekdays (11:00 AM-12:00 Noon, ET; 10:00-11:00 AM, PT) on the CBS Television Network.

LOL !!! Of all the things that I WISH was broadcasted in HD, The Price is Right is the LAST thing that I would want to watch.

I would think that the demographic for this program could care less.

The Million Dollar primetime specials have been broadcast in HD since Drew Carey took over hosting duties on TPIR. The strip of episodes airing Fridays back in Feb/Mar of 2008 were the first.

The daytime version hasn't been aired in HD yet. The studio has been "HD ready" and episodes may or may not have been shot in HD, but they have yet to air in HD in the mornings.

Personally I'm excited. I like TPIR, it's a daytime TV legend and the fact its going HD is great news. CBS is wasting money on "Survivor", so why not TPIR?

It's here! First time watching Price "live" in HD after recording the Million Dollar Spectaculars. Everything looks okay via WCTV OTA.

Now in HD on WWMT GR/K-zoo, though I had to call to get them to flip the switch. Apparently they didn't get the memo! Appreciative of how quickly they got it on right though.

My affiliate, WAFB (Baton Rouge, LA), tape delays Price is Right and Young & The Restless so they can shift them to times for the lead-in to their 12 and 5 o'clock newscasts, respectively.

Y&R has never been shown in HD here, so I didn't expect Price to be either - and it wasn't. The affiliate has no problem showing syndicated programming in HD, and has its own newscasts in HD, so is there any technical reason why they can't show Price and Y&R in HD if they're tape delaying it?

I've e-mailed the manager of the station, but they don't really seem to care.

I believe the equipment to show syndicated HD is completely different from the gear to do HD news which is completely different from the gear to record network feeds in HD.

HD on WWJ-DT, Detroit. Some of those contestants look better in SD. And you can see how cheap some of the sets look and the tricks they use to make it seem bigger. Lot of fun gazing in the 16:9 area.

For now, completed Price is Right shows are still being laid off to high-definition Sony HDCAM SR tape for playback.

CBS has installed a file-based production system from Harris Corp. at CBS Television City in Hollywood to support the game show The Price is Right.

The Harris system also records video using MPEG-2 4:2:2 compression, I-frame only, at the high-quality bit-rate of 150 megabits per second (Mbps), which Sawyer says delivers image quality that compares favorably to HDCAM SR tape, which records at a much higher 440 Mbps bitrate.

But the long-term plan is for shows to be directly transferred as files from the Harris SAN over fiber links to CBS' new Media Distribution Center in New York, which will then store them on additional Harris Nexio AMP servers for playout.
