View Full Version : Subwoofer for music ~$1000
dekaliber 08-18-08, 11:44 PM Hi all,
I'm looking to add a sub to round out my new setup.
I have PSB Synchrony Ones in the front and Synchrony Two B for surrounds and a Two C for center. The primary use of my system is for 2 channel music, so "fast" and "musical" are the two words I always see thrown around in that context. Being that the One's already go pretty low (30 Hz on axis @ 0° ±3dB, 33 Hz on axis @ 0° ±1.5dB, 33 Hz off axis @ 30° ±3dB), I'd like the sub to be able to go appreciably lower, ideally down to 20 Hz or so. Actually, I'm not even sure if I really need a sub for 2-channel listening (I listen to a lot of electronic music from various subgenres), but I figure it probably wouldn't hurt to let the sub handle the low frequencies and relieve the load on the fronts. I'd also like to have competent movie performance -- if not rattling my neighbors' wall ornaments, enough to be impressively immersive in my 20x14x8 living room.
I've only started doing research but was hoping the more experienced here could give me suggestions around or under the $1000 (new) mark. Two I've read to be pretty promising are:
REL T-1
Sunfire True Subwoofer Super Junior
How do these two compare? Please send more suggestions!

Let me ask you this, what made you choose these two subwoofers?
Is enclosure size or aesthetics important for you?

REL comes as a well recommended brand by a friend (who happens to be selling a T-1 in cherry, so it makes it pretty simple) and it has some interesting setup options for pairing with tower speakers. The Sunfire was recommended as a good, compact choice for music that can also go low for movies. Really, I haven't ventured too much into researching subs, so I'm just listening a couple that have been recommended that also seem to have received good press.
Sounds like quite a few folks here are fans of Hsu Research and SVS. Both seem to have great value from the cursory research I did last night. The VTF-3 HO seems quite promising.
kwkshift 08-19-08, 10:05 PM You can get bigger subs with more output than the 2 you listed, but they are much bigger, physically. I've used both of the units you mentioned and for their size, they do very well. You touched on the nice advantage of the T-1 the way it connects and integrates with your existing speakers which is a nice feature. How about borrowing your buddy's T-1 and taking it for a test drive in your own home?:D

If you can upgrade the $$$ to $1300 then the new HSU sub is probably an incredible Music sub.

Is this ULS-15?
Just curious -- what exactly makes a good sub for music?
I have Synchrony Two & Two C front end and am adding the super Jr. I chose based on size - it will go behind the corner cabinet and not even be visible. I'll set it up this weekend.
dekaliber 12-17-08, 02:53 PM I ended up leaving just the Synchrony Ones for two-channel listening since I realized their low end performance was more than adequate after some room treatments. I ended up getting an SVS PC 20-39+ for a movie sub.
I was looking at REL sub a while ago, end up w/ Essex sub for music(from what I gather, actully made many of the sub for REL)
Essex SW1 (http://www.tsto.com/cgi-bin/TSTO.storefront/49497c47004c00502740ac100341057d/Product/View/2543&2D1)
vVery happy w/ it. and end up getting a SW2 as well.
Although haven't listern to the Hsu 15inch seal sub, lots great reviews here...that be the only one for me if I'm looking now
Ironmike86 12-17-08, 05:48 PM I would look at the Ascend sub also.

Lot of ppl who received them say they sound good.I would get a 15" for music and HT. I would be interested in the Hsu Ul15 if you could up your budget. The Hsu 3.3 has finishes now that's in you range. At least you can ask Hsu which sub sounds better. I would look at the Mfw15 if they are in stock also
I recently did the big AV upgrade thing, but I kept my mains and surrounds. I'm enjoying my music (especially on SACD and DVD-A) all over again, in part because of my new Hsu VTF-3 Mk3. I like the flexibility provided by this sub: you can run it in max extension or max output modes, and add the turbo unit if you want further extension. I'm impressed with it for HT too. I think you'd like it for modern electronica/chill music; it will definitely dig down deep to fill in that nice low end.
I would look at the Ascend sub also.

The Ascend/Rythmik 15 incher is getting good reviews from critical listeners. For a music first sub, that would be my first choice.
