View Full Version : HELP PLEASE! Unable to stream WMV files to PS3 (I have looked everywhere for answers)

Hi,

I recently set up my PS3 and connected it (wired) to my home network. My PS3 is able to see my shared Media using both WMP11 and TVersity. However, I wish to view WMV files (downloads, etc.) on my PS3 and am unable to do so. Some of these may be copyright protected (eg. DVD downloads from the internet that were purchased online) and others are not. So far, I'm not having any luck whatsoever. I keep getting the "Unsupported Data" error every time I try to view one of the files.

I thought TVersity worked around this problem by "transcoding" the files, but so far I've been unable to get this to work. I'm even prepared to convert the files, but so far it seems ridiculously slow and I can seem to get my larger movies (1.25GB) to convert without crashing.

This is really frustrating. I've looked everywhere online - but can't find answers. There is so much information out there I just spend hours looking through websites and no solution. Please help if you can...

Thanks,
Matt

I'm pretty sure the encoding of the WMV affects whether it'll play on the PS3 or not.

Most work fine for me, but some get the same Unsupported Data error.

Not sure on the transcoding as I never had to use it while my PC was actually working :(

So what do I need to do to resolve it? I can't believe it just doesn't work. Is there any software out there that will solve the problem?

Your best bet is to get a program called Super!. Then encode the movie over to a file format the PS3 will accept. I have never worked with WMV files for the PS3 so this is a tough subject for me to advise on. If I was still on Windows XP I would be able to help you more.

Is there a way to stream copy-protected media, or will this only work for non copy-protected media?

I cannot comment on that because I have no DRM media. :(

Stupid question, but are you sure you set "Enable WMA" in PS3 settings?

Yes, I am. Even though the question may seem stupid, would you mind answering it for me. I don't understand why copy-protected media won't stream. I'm not moving it or copying it to a new location. Just trying to watch it through a Media Hub (PS3). Will any of the converters convert copy-protected WMV files to MPEG4 so that they can be played that way? What about Nero?
