About
The above chart details national carriage agreements with the top television service providers in the United States for all presently available or announced non-exclusive HD channels. Providers listed include the two major DBS carriers, the top ten cable MSOs, and Verizon and AT&T's fiber services. Other providers have been excluded because their footprint is simply too small. The eleventh largest cable MSO, for instance, serves only half as many cable subscribers (http://www.ncta.com/Stats/TopMSOs.aspx) as the smallest provider on our chart.

A tip of the hat to all the AVS members who have contributed to the spreadsheet over the years, and a special thanks to CycloneGT, nataraj, and sansri88 for their prior work updating and compiling the spreadsheet. An additional thanks goes to Ken H, who regularly prunes the thread for each update.

Subscription Sports Packages
This chart also tracks subscription sports packages with HD coverage. All cable providers marked above and Verizon FiOS offer their sports packages through iNDEMAND's three HD channels; Team HD, Game HD, and Game 2 HD. As such, they offer a limited amount (one to five games) of HD coverage on any given night with their package. DirecTV broadcasts significantly more HD coverage to its subscribers, typically all the HD games available in each package.

iNDEMAND began offering nine total HD feeds for its subscription sports packages on September 16, 2011. Carriage of these additional feeds varies by provider and market. For more information, see here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1339225).

RSN Carriage
This chart does not track carriage of RSNs. For a detailed breakdown of RSN availability, you should visit the Official AVS HDTV Programming Synopsis (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=11303524#post11303524). A special thanks goes to jefbal99 for maintaining the chart there.

East & West feeds
Where a "West" feed is marked, that means the provider offers two separate feeds of the same channel, one on a three-hour delay from the other. A reader on the West coast should probably swap the words "East" and "West" on this chart, and assume that if a provider does not carry a secondary feed of a given channel, the feed missing is the East coast feed. Yes, like most sports coverage, this chart too has an East coast bias.

Wide vs. Limited Carriage
Since cable operators roll out channels on a market-by-market basis, my default selection is "limited availability" unless a press release or someone here indicates otherwise. Channels listed above as "wide" are available to at least 50% of markets/subscribers.

Current Version
Refresh to ensure you're viewing the most recent version, dated 11/19/2011. Any additions, suggestions, and corrections are welcome.

An Excel 2011 version is attached. Users of older versions of Excel can download the free Compatibility Pack (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displayLang=en) to edit in Excel 2000, XP, or 2003.

The latest update is complete. Let me know where you see errors.

Because Comcast has completed WOM updates in over 90% of its markets, the default position for existing channels carried by Comcast is wide. If you have knowledge that certain channels are only offered on a regional basis, and that region constitutes less than half of Comcast's footprint, then we will return those channels to limited. New additions will continue to be marked as limited unless the press release indicates that it is being rolled out to more than 50% of markets/subscribers.

As always, please update us as channels go from limited availability to wide availability on the cable operators. Since cable operators roll out channels on a market-by-market basis, my default selection is "limited availability" unless a press release or someone here indicates otherwise.

Also, when TWC's acquisition of Insight is complete, I'm also going to remove CableOne, since it services only half as many subscribers as the next smallest provider on the chart. The top 12 television providers service over 93 million households in all and at least more than 1 million subscribers each. By comparison, CableOne services only 637,000 subscribers.

Sprout HD is not a widely carried channel by Comcast by any means.

Neither is C-SPAN and C-SPAN 2 HD...

In fact, Comcast is just completely broken now. There is no way that they carry 139 HD channels in most of their markets.

Is E! really still "limited" for Time Warner? I don't know of any market that doesn't carry it. And Crime & Investigation was added to a bunch of systems this year.

In fact, Comcast is just completely broken now.No it's not.

There is no way that they carry 139 HD channels in most of their markets.Agree.

Although it's obvious the Comcast section needs to be adjusted, it is most definitely not 'completely broken'. As a matter of fact, it's much better than it was before the update, because it's been quite some time since more than 50% of Comcast systems have had over 100 HD channels.

A lot of the stuff that was previously limited on Comcast has been wide for a while.

It's mostly the premiums and some of those channels like Sprout, WFN, Bloomberg and The C-Span's that are in question.

The best thing would be for this to lead to us finding a Comcast person that knows Comcast systems like I know BHN and Kevin knows TWC.

It's hard to do Comcast with their many systems but it can be done.

As for TWC, Kevin knows those systems better than anyone so you could ask him about E!.

Finally, Cable One is way behind the times and it will be nice to see it dropped. If they had that in my area, I'd definitely go Satelite or Telco.

The frustrating part is we know, based on prior comments here, that the WOM upgrade does not result in a uniform lineup. WOM subscribers in Minnesota have a different lineup from WOM subscribers in Baltimore.

In that sense, Comcast is broken.

Here's an updated list for Suddenlink in Munds Park, AZ(Suburban Flagstaff)...they recently converted the whole system to digital.
Flagstaff still has 62 channels in analog, so some channels are not yet available there, but in general more channels are available in HD than your list notes.

The frustrating part is we know, based on prior comments here, that the WOM upgrade does not result in a uniform lineup. WOM subscribers in Minnesota have a different lineup from WOM subscribers in Baltimore.

In that sense, Comcast is broken.

No HD lineup in the Mid-Atlantic states (MD, WV, DE, VA) has over 100 channels, even though most larger ones have been converted to WOM. There's still some fairly major systems in VA that have not been converted (around Richmond and Roanoke/Lynchburg).

The Fox Soccer/Galavision/Sprout/Bloomberg/C-SPAN/Hub/BBCA group of channels is probably getting close to wide distribution. I'd say around 90 HD channels are wide for Comcast at this point, and only 5 HD premiums would be wide (HBO, Cinemax, Starz, Encore, Showtime). No Mid-Atlantic lineup includes any more premiums than this.

Some units throughout PA outside of Philadelphia have Crime & Investigation, GSN, Sportsman Channel, Starz Kids & Family, Starz Comedy and The Movie Channel in HD in addition to the typical Mid-Atlantic channels. Most of these are later WOM conversions in Western PA around Pittsburgh.

There is HD boxing streaming on the home page (though the quality of the stream is pretty poor). Has anyone tried to pull the signal to see if that's the case? It's free and in the public domain.

A lot of non-premium channels have a different feed for both coasts but they usually only carry one.

The only reason why it, as well as TNT & TBS have their west coast HD feeds even listed on the chart, is because U-verse DOES carry BOTH feeds everywhere, regardless of time zone.

Other than this exception, I HIGHLY doubt you'll see another provider carry BOTH HD feeds of basic (non-premium) channels in a given system... ;)

HDOrlando
12-13-11, 07:46 PM
I'm aware of the ATT U-Verse situation and why they have both counted.

Let's say BHN carries The East Feed for it's systems but The West Coast feed for Bakersfield, California. A lot of channels have a different feed for west coast systems.

Do we count these as well? If so, were going to have a lot more stuff on the chart.

URFloorMatt
12-13-11, 11:10 PM
Nope. Don't count West feeds if they're only carried out west. I realize that's somewhat confusing, but it's explained in the top post. The only time a "West" feed is marked as carried in the chart is when two feeds of that channel are carried on the same system.

I don't think comcast will have Game plan HD (they still don't hav BTN ALTs in HD or game 3-9 HD or team 2-9 HD) any time soon and I don't think game is in HD yet Directv tried to get in 2010.

Hah. Nice to see Disney continuing their ESPN blackmail. "You will take ALL our channels or you won't get ESPN! Oh and we're raising prices on ESPN too! Muhahaha!"

This is the only way a damn PRESCHOOLERS channel could get a HD feed on notoriously new HD channel stagnant Verizon FiOS before Cartoon Network HD, BBC America HD, G4 HD, etc.

Pretty impressive that it's going on DirecTV too. I don't think they've added a new "basic" HD channel in years. They're missing at least 100 HD channels.

I saw the announcement back in 2010 for Bright House getting Disney Junior but saw nothing about the HD version although I expect Bright House to add it no later than a month after the launch.

Update: BHN Orlando and Tampa Bay just got Disney Jr. HD announced for March 23.

There is a comment on Wikipedia, but there is no reference cited. I don't know how reliable this information is:

Disney Junior HD will be a high definition simulcast feed, broadcasting a moderate amount of Disney Junior's programming in 720p HD. It will begin broadcasting on March 23, 2012. Many cable providers will carry the HD simulcast feed, along with DirecTV, AT&T U-verse and Verizon FIOS. Currently, Dish Network does not carry the Disney/ABC Cable Networks' HD simulcast channels due to a retransmission consent dispute with the Walt Disney Company, so it will probably not carry the channel.

Bloomberg TV in HD
TV Land HD
Investigation Discovery HD
MTV2 HD (just added this week)

I think that TWC might have Playboy HD as a wide add planned for this year as they are leaving a channel open in between Playboy and Playboy espanol in all of the system with legal notices in the last week that have mentioned the consolidations of the Adult Channels to the same ones nationwide.

Great, TWC can add Playboy and Hustler, but not NFL Network. Can't these people get their priorities straight?

Aren't Playboy and Hustler subscription channels (i.e. only those who want the channel pay for it)? Whereas NFL Network would be in a base package so that those with the package pay for it whether they want it or not.

When will Universal Sports launch their HD Feed :-)

It's supposed to already be up as of last month, but I haven't heard anything since the announcements.

The bigger question is who will carry it?

The only large scale SD carrier they currently have is DirecTV, so that would make the most sense, but at the same time DirecTV has been slow in adding new HD for quite some time now.

What many don't know is the fact Comcast's NBC Sports Group only owns a minority stake in Universal Sports. Leo Hindery's InterMedia Partners is the majority stake holder. Which probably explains why Comcast hasn't add it yet.

I'd think if carriers are going to sign on, it would be sometime before the Summer Games start in July. Same for HD.

Since the channel was previously available to most of the country as a subchannel of one of the local broadcasters (often NBC, but not always), there were no direct carriage deals with cable or telco providers. Many of the stations did have carriage deals with local cable and telco providers, but that was up to the ownership of the station not the owners of the network. Now that the network is cable-only, they will have to sign their own carriage deals with the cable and telco providers, and they will either need to piggyback on Comcast/NBC Universal's existing channels when they come up for renewal (i.e. if you want USA, CNBC, and NBCSN, you also have to add US), or will have to get sufficient viewer demand to convince the providers to add the channel on its own. Assuming they put live Olympic coverage on there and don't just dump a bunch of crappy highlight shows and reruns on there like they did in the past, then most providers who don't have a history of carriage fights will probably add it then. TWC and Cablevision subscribers might have it in time for Sochi :D.

Are they carried by more providers than just Directv?Sort of.

No Comcast, no Dish, no Verizon, no AT&T, no TWC, no Cox, no Brighthouse, no Charter, no Cablevision, no Mediacom, no Suddenlink, no Insight, no CableOne.......

From Multichannel News
1/9/12

Alaskan cable operator GCI, Hiawatha Broadband Communications in Minnesota, Cascade Communications in Oregon, Waitsfield Cable in Vermont, MTC Cable in New York and IPTV distributor SkyAngel.

To that end, Universal Sports could announce a carriage pact with a major distributor as early as this week. The network was “pretty far along” with two or three others, and “we could get to the finish by the end of the month.” Looks like that didn't happen.

As always, Wiki's references should be checked. The one listed for the 'February 2012' date for HD was from Multichannel News, and the article didn't say February, it said January 2012. Looks like that didn't happen either.

I wouldn't expect it until the Olympics, as that's the only way Comcast is going to shoehorn it onto other carriers.

NFL Network and NFL Redzone should be limited for Mediacom (not announced).

And I would move the following to wide instead of limited (they are in 1/2 line-ups that have any HD available, Mediacom has some limited SD only line-ups for special purposes like hotels):

MTV HD
VH1 HD
CMT HD
