Try to compare both services yourself and go with your own eyes. steverobertson 08-20-08, 01:10 PM All D* subs will say D* all E* subs will say E* GioGambino 08-20-08, 01:20 PM My reasoning was that any quality of HD is probably better than the SD I had before, so I just went with the company who had the better deal that fit into my budget. I went with E*, but I have the install on Sunday, so I can't comment on PQ yet. NetworkTV 08-20-08, 01:31 PM As of right now, I would score it this way: Value for the dollar: E* DVR: E* Picture Quality: D* Amount of Sports: D* The thing is, things change a lot. For a while, E* had better image quality than D* because D* was miserable before they launched the last few satellites. On the other hand, for a while, D* had the better DVR in TiVo, but now E* has them beat compared to D*'s new DVR (which still has a little way to go to be anything other than "OK"). Packages and pricing are always subject to change, so value changes over time. However, D* pretty much has the lock on sports packages for the foreseeable future. Go with what works for you. Neither service is bad or perfect. The only way to have the perfect experience is to have multiple providers. steverobertson 08-20-08, 01:45 PM Check out this post about Dish http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=14484967#post14484967 dolmar 08-20-08, 01:51 PM I recently switched from D* to E*. I honestly can not tell a difference between either one but I can tell a huge difference between OTA and either service. D* has E* beat on sports hands down. E* currently has more Premium movie channels in HD. E* is much cheaper than D*. I switched over the price and fact D* refused to give me free equipment and the fact E* is much cheaper made the switch a no brainer as E* is cheaper to begin with and currently is giving away stuff like free Cinemax as long as you maintain paperless billing with auto pay enrollment which is a nice savings in it self too. As a new customer E* gave me free equipment. 1 HD DVR + 1 HD Box. D* wanted $150 for HD DVR out of me as an existing customer and my monthly bill was $35 a month more for basically the same non premium HD Channels as I was not paying for any of the special sports packages on D* anyways. I was paying for HBO, Showtime, Cinemax and Starz on D* and had about 1/2 as many HD channels. E* isn't going anywhere and neither are their DVRs. One way or another, they'll sort it out and it will be back to business as usual. The question is, whether they'll be forced to re-invent their DVR and potentially end up in the back seat compared to D*'s DVR, which has enough time in the wild to potentially be better than anything E* could come up with to replace the "infringing" software. There's always that period of time where the bugs need to be worked out and that will hurt them during that time. However, I would suspect E* will simply pay off TiVo and continue with the current system. steverobertson 08-20-08, 01:57 PM I wouldn't read too much into that. You may very well be right but I think E* has an awful lot on their plate these days and not much of it is very posetive. I hope they survive to help keep D* on their toes. Well, with the downgrading of the stock, I honestly would consider E* to be an investor "buy" right now rather than wait for the outcome of the lawsuit. The eventual outcome will either be "good" or "less good" for E*, but it won't be "bad" and certainly won't take down the ship. Once that is over and done with, things will ramp back up subscriber-wise; and the stock will, too. Don't forget, D* floundered during the GM Hughes sale, but turned it around under Newscorp and is continuing the trend with the latest ownership change. I personally prefer D*, but I don't have any issues recommending E* purely from a package or hardware standpoint. steverobertson 08-20-08, 02:16 PM Well, with the downgrading of the stock, I honestly would consider E* to be an investor "buy" right now rather than wait for the outcome of the lawsuit. All very good points it just seems to me that D* is really kicking butt these days and I remember back in the GM days as well I have been with them since 95. |
