Deeper blacks of the PZ80 and 85 are appealing, though.

The problem is that the new house is corner to corner windows, and I'm really concerned about reflections/glare, so I've started looking at the 52" Samsung LCDs as well, probably the 550 series. But then I'm concerned about the black levels and smooth motion I've come to expect from plasmas in a dark room.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Also, I could get the old 77u, which has a different and seemingly more effective antiglare coating. Budget is under 2k.

Hmm...under 2k. Not enough for a Pio. I would try to stick with Panny rather than Sammy.

How much daytime viewing vs. night viewing? The Samsung 550 LCDs will be brighter, but not even remotely close on the black levels, contrast and smoothness compared to your old Panny 9UK. I definitely wouldn't go back a generation and get the 77u. In my opinion, that's actually a step down from your 9UK. I have both a 9UK and a 75u, and my 9UK has better blacks and far more accurate colors. The new PX80u will have better blacks, its brighter and has more accurate out of the box colors (compared to the 77u). I haven't had a chance to compare the PX80u blacks to the PZ80u blacks, so I can't say how big the difference is there.

Go 50PZ800U. This would be a noticeable upgrade, but not huge. The 9UK is a great display!

Black levels on the 2008 Samsung LCDs are considerably better than the 9UK plasmas if you're right in front of the screen. Like all LCDs, black level suffers off axis. Also I believe many of the Samsung LCDs actually have glossy screens. That means they may not be good for a very sunny room.

Have you considered the Samsung 550/650 plasmas? They will have more accurate color than the px80 and will be more flexible with inputs and resolutions (more like the 9UK).

Go 50PZ800U. This would be a noticeable upgrade, but not huge. The 9UK is a great display!

50px80u if you want to stay closer to the 1000 area, 50pz800u if you can go closer to 2000!!!

Get another Commercial display. The 11UK can be had for $1500 online and will only get cheaper. The 10UKA is very cheap online. Any of these sets will demolish the consumer trash IMHO. Then again, one has to know how to use the settings correctly to get the most out of the display since there is "a lot" of tweakability with them.
