View Full Version : Subwoofer recommendation for large basement
Poofdawgy 08-20-08, 02:42 PM Hey everyone, I'm in the market for a new subwoofer that will primarily be used for home theater. I was looking at either the Epik's Tower, Conquest, or HSU's ULS-15. The basement is very large and open so I am concerned about that issue. I've done a rough sketch of the basement floor plan and was hoping I could get some advice to help point me in the right direction. Thanks!

I would go with the Epik Conquest. It is good to 10 Hz, and very powerful across the board.
Poofdawgy 08-20-08, 02:53 PM The only problem with the Conquest is trying to convince my parents to get a sub that is the size of a small fridge. I really don't mind the size and the room is big enough to accommodate it.

Whoops parents I don’t think the parents are going to relish your long nights up with Die Hard 4.0 rumbling the houses foundations into the ground very much.:D

Poofdawgy 08-20-08, 04:51 PM Haha yeah but I'm good at convincing my Dad, so we'll see!
Poofdawgy 08-20-08, 05:34 PM The real problem is the fact that the main listening area is about 4100 cubic feet but the rest of the basement has to be taken into account so that is really where I am unsure.
maytime 08-20-08, 05:48 PM What is your budget?
JBLsound4645 08-20-08, 05:53 PM Well you do realize you need matching LCR fronts you do know that fact don’t you? And I’ve been using matching fronts before you where born, now then!
Poofdawgy 08-20-08, 06:02 PM Under 2k. I'm not exactly sure what you mean about matching fronts.

The young man is asking about subwoofers, not speakers. Why would you even bring this up? It belongs in the "Speaker Forum".

Dual MFW-15's would be my first option:

Risk free 30-day listening period, multiple finishes and they're in-stock, (finally).

Because it’s all part of the whole package or didn’t you know that fact?

LOL I’m out of here he hasn’t the first clue and I’m worn out talking about rule 1! Good luck or better still ask a projectionist at a state of the art THX cinema only to kindly show you around booth and a peek behind the screen. Good luck.
Poofdawgy 08-20-08, 06:37 PM I don't understand why you think I have a projector.. I know the sketch of the basement is poorly drawn but I guess I left out some details. This is how our basement is currently set up. I was just looking for some opinions on what subs would go well in that particular room.
lalakersfan34 08-20-08, 06:46 PM I agree with craig john. Dual MFW-15's would look beautiful, offer tons of output, give more placement options than a single Conquest, and come in way below the $2000 mark.
Poofdawgy 08-20-08, 06:57 PM How would the dual MFW-15's stack up against a single Tower?

Bye!

Quite well, I would think. You get the added output of duals, which allows you to run each one at a lower level, which translates to lower total distortion. You can place them in separate locations and smooth out the frequency response over more seats than with just a single sub. Also, the MFW-15 has several nice finishes. The Tower has "military-grade textured black" and rosenut.

IMO, the only advantages the Tower would have over dual MFW-15's is a little deeper extension. The Tower should probably dig 3-4hz deeper than the dual MFW-15's. On the other hand, the MFW-15's look a lot nicer, have better flexibility in terms of placement, and should produce more output than a single Tower in all but the deepest bass. Unless you plan on running 14hz sine waves all day long, I'd doubt the Tower's deeper extension would make much difference during real world usage. I'd bet that the dual MFW-15's should still give good extension to 17-18hz in your large basement, and the ability of two subwoofers to smooth frequency response could be a big plus as well.
Poofdawgy 08-20-08, 08:10 PM That is a good point. I'm not sure how well duals would work in my basement. Have you heard anything about the ULS-15?

From what I've heard, it has great sound quality and some cool features like wireless technology (no subwoofer cable required), but it isn't an SPL monster. The MFW-15 and Tower should each handily outgun the ULS-15 in output. In your basement, I'd want at least two ULS-15's. Just my opinion, though - if you aren't a bass head, you might get by with one just fine. I'd recommend checking out the forum at Hsu Research's website, as you can probably get more info there.
Poofdawgy 08-20-08, 08:24 PM That's interesting...Looks like I will have to keep researching!
lalakersfan34 08-20-08, 09:27 PM If you haven't already, check out the New Hsu Sub Flat to 10hz!!! thread:

While there's a lot of bickering, there are also some great impressions of the ULS-15, primarily from member Mia & Lana's dad. That and the forum on Hsu's website are probably your best bet at real world impressions of the ULS-15.
Poofdawgy 08-21-08, 12:14 PM It does sound like a very impressive sub. However, it does appear that two or possibly more would be required for my room and the price tag isn't going to fly with the parents. So it's really looking like the Tower or two MFW-15's.

what happened to the conquest idea?
would be easier to dial in than duals
and is = to 1 1/2 towers
also what about a pb ultra 13?
Poofdawgy 08-21-08, 01:50 PM After showing my parents the picture of the Conquest they said no way. I agree it is a rather large sub. I've read a little about the PB Ultra 13 and it seems like an excellent sub that's very comparable to the Tower. I'm just trying to find the best sub(s) that will work the best in our basement.

the ultra is smaller than the tower, and has set-up eq
is definetly a monster killer,
look into the ultra thread good reads
Poofdawgy 08-21-08, 02:12 PM The room size control definitely looks interesting considering how open the listening area is. This is definitely going to be a tough decision!
Soundood 08-21-08, 11:06 PM Is the sub going to be hidden (missed it if it was mentioned). If it is...
JTR Captivator. Simply insane power and sound quality for the money. The most output and extension for the bucks. It is big tho. I have three in my demo room.
Poofdawgy 08-22-08, 12:51 AM Wow that thing is huge!!! Looks awesome but I can't convince them on the Conquest so I doubt this would be a viable option. This is a lot harder than I thought. I've been reading countless posts and threads trying to figure out what would be the best sub for me.
