View Full Version : Star Wars: Force Unleashed Demo Stryker412 08-21-08, 09:34 AM Demo is out. Abaddon 08-21-08, 09:43 AM Demo is out.Already? On US PS store? Is the whole update already done then? Suzook 08-21-08, 10:06 AM yes do tell because I cant find it on the US, UK or Japanese PSN joeblow 08-21-08, 10:10 AM I got it from my Zimbabwe account. The OP is just planting his flag thread early for whatever reason. There is no demo out yet. Suzook 08-21-08, 10:15 AM well that stinks. I was looking forward to having something to play while we get 26 inches of rain here in Central Florida. BAH Aletuner 08-21-08, 10:21 AM Out for the 360? Apparently the Demo is out. http://www.msxbox-world.com/xbox360/news/article/8378/Two-new-demos-unleashed-on-Live.html "Gamers can now download a Star Wars: The Force Unleashed demo weighing in at 904.62 MB from the Live Marketplace. There's also an icy NHL 2K9 demo which weighs in at a pucking 810 MB. What are you waiting for." I was downloading it on my 360 and thought they hit at the same time. I don't understand why they don't release at the same time like they said they were. I was hoping to compare the two versions. confidenceman 08-21-08, 11:50 AM Typically, PSN updates don't come until around 3pm PST. XBL updates are rolling throughout the week and are often updated at around midnight PST for the day they're adding the content. For example, the Star Wars demo hit XBL last night at around 12:30am. I've played the demo and very much enjoyed it. Definitely give it a shot. Be forewarned, though, that it does use a QTE system, and it's not a very good one. :( Guinn3sS 08-21-08, 11:52 AM Typically, PSN updates don't come until around 3pm PST. You can pretty much use the force on anything right off the bat. I love Picking up enemies and tossing them all over the level. Pretty cool physics too. Nothing new as to graphics, pretty standard nowawdays. The QTE was ok, for use on bosses and or drones. Felt like i was in ratchet and clank for a moment in that game...lol Light Saber isnt nearly as fun as I thought it would be to use. You have one button to control it with and very little control of how you swing it. The game is all about "THE FORCE" Edit: btw it took 2 hours for me to dl "wireless connection" IeraseU 08-21-08, 08:44 PM Ok, I played through the demo. I'm getting 'good game' vibes, but not great or masterpiece vibes. I'm predicting 8.0-8.5 review scores. Bobington 08-21-08, 09:24 PM Game felt clunky. Combat actually bored me. Most certainly not the rush I first got with Uncharted. Quick question: Can anybody tell me what I'm supposed to do in the hanger deck with the tie fighters that come by? I can't seem to jump that broken bridge and I have no idea what I'm supposed to do! LOL. Suzook 08-21-08, 10:39 PM god I wish they would port Rogue Squadron III updated to the PS3. Could you imagine going down the trench at the death star in 1080p............... instantpop 08-21-08, 11:10 PM I'm kind of impressed but not really. The idea behind the game is cool and the mayhem is fun to create, but I just don't see myself being enthralled in a full game experience of it. Seems like it would get extremely repetitive and almost boring. The controls felt kind of clunky. I did enjoy pulling a guy close to me with the force and then impaling him in the air with the light saber though. NJ3118 08-21-08, 11:34 PM I played it a while. I'll probably wait until it's officially released to see what the full game reviews are like. Right now, it's not a day one purchase for me. Chris Ruhl 08-21-08, 11:47 PM L1 huh? Thanks.... couldn't get over that. Appreciate it! UxiSXRD 08-22-08, 01:06 AM I was able to jump across with X. L1 does the dash thing. Pretty neat demo. My expectations were kinda low but I think I will be getting this one. The Force controls are a bit weird, needing to use both analog sticks... I got better the second time through the demo, though. vertigo235 08-22-08, 01:23 AM I liked it, took a few play thoughs to warm up to it though. I think I might actually get the PS3 version of this too because the sound is much better than the 360 version, and no MP. Bobington 08-22-08, 03:33 AM I was able to jump across with X. L1 does the dash thing. Pretty neat demo. My expectations were kinda low but I think I will be getting this one. The Force controls are a bit weird, needing to use both analog sticks... I got better the second time through the demo, though. You can dash after jumping, much more distance. confidenceman 08-22-08, 04:50 AM Even easier than dashing, you can double-jump. Just hit the jump button again at the peak of your first jump. You'll get across that gap easily with plenty of room to spare. Played through the demo a couple more times on the higher difficulties. The force powers are really versatile, and I can imagine they get better and better as they improve. Great combinations. I especially like the force grip-saber toss combo (turns into a flying skewer technique). Also, once you get the throwing technique down a bit better, you can get some great action on your tosses. There's a lot of things you can do with all of these force techniques and combos. I don't know if it's my love for Star Wars or what, but I'm really liking this game so far! utgotye 08-22-08, 05:37 AM This is a game I'd rather play on PC. You get used to playing with a keyboard and mouse after all of the other games like this one being on PC, such as Jedi Academy. I think it would be a lot of fun on PC. I'm not sure I could get used to playing with a controller. dragonyeuw 08-22-08, 07:17 AM I'm actually considering the Wii version,I do like the game but the Wii version will have 5 exclusive levels and duel mode.If the controls are good, that may be enough for me to consider that version, inferior graphics and all.Right now, this doesn't seem like a day one$60 purchase, especially without multiplayer. Aletuner 08-22-08, 09:30 AM I loved the demo... great physics, force blast or whatever looks awesome, loved throwing things, including bodies, at my enemies! I think the main thing that will determine if this is a mega-hit will be the story line, or lack there-of. There have been a few star wars games I have played that were just so/so in terms of gameplay, graphics, etc. but had awesome story lines with emotional rollercoasters, etc... those were great. There have also been some with incredible gameplay, graphics, etc. with next to nothing for a story line, and those got old fast. Someone posted about getting the PS3 version as opposed to the 360 version due to sound... I was thinking about getting the 360 version for the rumble in the controller. What/where are some links to information about the sound actually being better on the PS3 version? I do not care about MP for this game. dragonyeuw 08-22-08, 09:39 AM One thing I do like is the return to the OT era of Star Wars.I've had my fill of the prequel era... TonyLukes3 08-22-08, 10:03 AM You guys are killin me, I downloaded it last night and installed this morning before I went to work. Can't wait to get home & try it out! instantpop 08-22-08, 10:25 AM I was thinking about getting the 360 version for the rumble in the controller. The DualShock 3 is your friend. Your best friend, in fact. Trat 08-22-08, 10:33 AM Demo was fun, but no way I can keep my attention span for the full game. MaxDam77 08-22-08, 10:56 AM arrgg! When I tried to installed it the error message appeared! Downloading it again! steven975 08-22-08, 11:17 AM Normally, I would get a dual-platform game on my 360 due to the better multiplayer, but since this game doesn't seem to have it, the better speed due to the HDD install may tip me in favor of the PS3 version. I tried the 360 demo and will try the PS3. If they are identical enough I'll probably buy the latter. PS3 games tend to have better resale, too, as there are fewer copies floating around. Aletuner 08-22-08, 11:36 AM The DualShock 3 is your friend. Your best friend, in fact. I'm sure it's a great controller... but I already shelled out $50 for a 2nd six-axis wireless controller the day I bought my PS3 (about 6 months ago) and both work perfectly. I can't justify spending the additional cash for yet another controller just because of the rumble, when I already own 2 working controllers for the PS3, as well as 2 working controllers for the 360 that already have rumble. When one of them dies, that will be the replacement for it for sure! instantpop 08-22-08, 11:56 AM I'm sure it's a great controller... but I already shelled out $50 for a 2nd six-axis wireless controller the day I bought my PS3 (about 6 months ago) and both work perfectly. When one of them dies, that will be the replacement for it for sure! I hear ya. I did the same but couldn't resist importing 2 DS3's when they came out in Japan (love me the white controllers). I always hated how light the regular Sixaxis felt. Not nearly enough weight to it. The DS3, however, is perfect. UxiSXRD 08-22-08, 12:49 PM I wouldn't trade my ceramic white DS3 for anything... well maybe the Batarang if they would have come out with it. I loved the way that controller looked. ppshooky 08-22-08, 12:52 PM I have 2 pre-DS3s and one DS3. I'm prepping for LittleBigPlanet and future 4-player co-op games. deathbymetal 08-22-08, 01:35 PM I really enjoyed this demo, it truly solidified my purchase. jasnmb 08-22-08, 02:27 PM I pulled some junk off a wall with the force and noticed that after a while they disappeared off of the floor. i think enemies even did that after I killed them...but I'll have to double check that later. When the items disappeared there wasn't even that much happening on the screen. Maybe it's just me, but I find this almost inexcusable on PS3/360 games. Am I the only one who thinks this? I chopped one of the robots in half and watched it slowly fade away. It's a solid rent, I usually don't buy games that have no multiplayer elements. I'd just breeze through the story and probably just put it on the shelf. Great demo though, It's highly enjoyable. mproper 08-22-08, 02:59 PM Maybe it's just me, but I find this almost inexcusable on PS3/360 games. Am I the only one who thinks this? I noticed this once when I threw a guy behind me (360 demo) and turned around to throw him at someone else, and he was gone. I dunno...I don't find this atypical in a game like this with what amounts to destructable environments. There is a LOT of elements that would need to be kept track of. I found it more annoying that ripping tie fighters off the walls and throwing them at people resulted in an explosion, but no debris. I wanted to pick up the big solar panels and whip them around, or roll around the cockpit like a big ball over people, but there's nothing left of it to play with. Chris Schempp 08-22-08, 04:00 PM I noticed this once when I threw a guy behind me (360 demo) and turned around to throw him at someone else, and he was gone. While keeping track of EVERYTHING would likely be absurd, I wanted some TIE Fighter pieces. That would have been fun. JSLM 08-22-08, 04:09 PM I remember a dev interviewed about the demo saying there was an exclusive ending to the level that was entirely different from the actual game. I beat the 2 legged scout and then it just says "The saga coninues.." and then a slideshow of screenshots. Am I missing something here???!!! I wanted to pick up the big solar panels and whip them around, or roll around the cockpit like a big ball over people, but there's nothing left of it to play with. Didn't get a chance to play the demo last night, but this sounds like something that would irritate me. Isn't the point of the crazy physics and matter engines so that it could do stuff like that? The way they talk about it, I've always assumed that after ripping apart an AT-ST I could swing the leg around and cause even more havok and stuff. I can understand stuff eventually disappearing, but we should have the opportunity to play around with debris. JSLM 08-22-08, 04:18 PM I remember a dev interviewed about the demo saying there was an exclusive ending to the level that was entirely different from the actual game. Malcolm_B 08-22-08, 05:24 PM The demo was... OK. Think this isn't making my Must Buy list only based on the demo. confidenceman 08-22-08, 05:59 PM Or was this just 360 version???Nope. Played both versions and they end the same. No "special ending" unless you count the trailers. Stryker412 08-22-08, 06:03 PM Another thing I noticed. I held a trooper up and tossed my saber at him thus impaling him. I let him fall to the floor dead, but if I picked him up again and just held him there he would wiggle around and shoot at me. Nice to see they can come back to life. ExAnim8r 08-22-08, 06:50 PM Star Wars games have almost always struggled (Xwing vs Tie and the original Jedi Knight were my favourites). I think the demo was promising, remember it's only a demo, which could have been finalized long ago. The final version could have several bug fixes. EB Games has a pre-order promotion offering full trade in value within 1 week of pickup, so if you buy pre-order and hate it... problem solved. -ExAnim8r Kevuda 08-22-08, 08:36 PM I thought the demo was ok. Picking things up and tossing them in every direction was a lot of fun, but I'm sure that feeling wears off during the full version. When it came down to the basic gameplay, like fighting the AI, I found the combat to be lacking that polished touch that you find in god of war (like the variety of combos available from the start, and the different approaches to killing enemies with your blocks/dodges/reflects/etc) Fighting the end "boss" wasn't even fun in my opinion. Maybe this is because I don't have access to all of the moves yet, but it just felt like a cheesy beat down versus a well thought (and fun) battle. I hope I'm wrong and the final version blows me away, but I'll probably only rent this, where as I fully intended to buy it before. GW-SMOkeY 08-22-08, 09:03 PM The game is being made with the PS3 in mind first. Its the lead platform. It works good, and i think I never really got into the SW games at least not unless they were on the N64. So hope this one delivers, it has the potential. Anyway, how many of you are missing on some gun action? At least a pistol would be good! Cyborg6971 08-22-08, 10:14 PM I thought it playe like a demo should just fine but after finishing it i felt like a super yearning to see some of battlefront 3 that is the star wars game i'm waiting for but this will have to do i'll buy. Anthony1 08-23-08, 04:00 AM After playing the demo, I have to say I'm a bit underwhelmed by it. The graphics are decent, nothing super spectacular, and the gameplay seems to get pretty monotonous. I was playing the demo for twenty minutes and already was getting tired of throwing debris and stuff all over the place. It's a cool concept at first, but seems to wear off pretty quick. I still want to check out the full game, but it's definitely moved into the rental category for me. I wonder if it was wise for Lucasarts to even have a demo for this? I think they might have lost more sales than they gained. Alot of people planned on buying this on day 1 without question, and now some of those people have decided against it. I'm sure by the same token, they have grabbed some people that maybe had no interest at all, but overall I think they might be losing a bit more sales than they are gaining. jmystikcfl 08-23-08, 09:01 AM Well, now that Fay's gone and I actually stand half a chance of being able to go home from work, I'm going to have to check this out. All the screen shots looked excellent. And I do love the idea of being able to toss around a few Clone Troopers. Is this one actually up on the US PSN, or will I have to log into one of my foreign accounts? Chris Ruhl 08-23-08, 10:08 AM It is up on the US PSN. Hope all is well down there.... and Fay didn't hurt you guys too bad! Martez 08-23-08, 04:40 PM Just finished the demo. Not terribly impressed, though I am interested in the storyline and how it fits into the timeline it covers. Doesn't The Apprentice join the Rebels eventually? MaxDam77 08-23-08, 04:42 PM I had high hopes on this one. By the trailers,..it was a must buy,...but now..I'll probably rent it. J__Chris 08-23-08, 05:29 PM sorta reminds me of jedi knight...which is a good thing. I liked the demo. kwaidonjin 08-23-08, 06:30 PM O.K. demo, average graphics. I don't like that the lightsaber takes a back seat to the forcepowers,. All i want is a StarWars game that if you hit a stormstrooper with a light saber he gets cut in half. How can you hit something 2 or 3 times with a lightsaber to have to kill it. The coolest thing about starwars is the lightsaber. Tenkaipalm 08-23-08, 08:04 PM O.K. demo, average graphics. GW-SMOkeY 08-23-08, 09:17 PM ^ You could be right, I thought as I recall Lucas Arts stating that he is interested in making the PS3 as the lead platform, so maybe. NM it looks like its on par with the X360 project being further in the initial stages. http://www.gamespot.com/news/6186606.html kwaidonjin 08-24-08, 12:01 AM Ever play the Jedi Knight games? no, was that a pc game?not much into pc gaming. confidenceman 08-24-08, 03:41 AM Yes, the Dark Forces series was a PC series. "Jedi Knight" was what the later Dark Forces games were called. And, yes, they were the single best use of the Star Wars IP ever in video games. These are worth tracking down and playing, regardless of whether you consider yourself "into" PC gaming. Especially the first two. I'm guessing that Tenkaipalm is referring most directly to Jedi Knight II (Dark Forces III) for its robust use of the light saber. These days, these older games should run well on even the most outdated of PC rigs. Definitely worth finding and playing through. Tenkaipalm 08-24-08, 10:42 AM Both newer JK games (JKII, and Academy) made good use of the Saber, but yea, JK academy did it much better since you begin with one. However, JKII had dismemberment as an option, while Academy needed a mod. I would force pull troopers into my lightsaber and the would fall apart. Fun times. The JK games were primarily PC games, however, JKII and JK: Academy were released on Xbox as well. The PC versions are the ones to get (some outstanding mods out there), but the Xbox versions are top-notch as well. JKII was also released on Gamecube as well, I believe. kwaidonjin 08-24-08, 11:42 AM Both newer JK games (JKII, and Academy) made good use of the Saber, but yea, JK academy did it much better since you begin with one. JKII was also released on Gamecube as well, I believe. o.k. you guys have peaked my interest in these games. I have a pent 4 3.1 ghz windows xp media center 512 mb ram and integrated graphics. I wonder if it would play these games? I also have a pci-e x16 slot i could put a cheap graphics card in. I found jedi knight 2 jedi outcast for pretty cheap. i know this is the wrong forum for pc games. UxiSXRD 08-24-08, 12:15 PM Yeah, that PC would be fine. Those games came out when the 900-1200mhz systems were the top IIRC. Athlon and P3 IIRC. In fact, you might have a problem getting them working on XP and need that backward compatibility stuff. I still have my old Athlon 900 running (and my old Pentium 60, as well, for those old old DOS/4GW games.) kidgenius 08-24-08, 01:32 PM Yeah, that PC would be fine. I still have my old Athlon 900 running (and my old Pentium 60, as well, for those old old DOS/4GW games.) I concur. I ran Jedi Knight II: Outcast on a pentium 3 850 with an old Radeon 8500LE card without issue. It was a ton of fun. Also, you had both light and dark force powers (though I understand why this game is dark only). jzderf 08-24-08, 02:14 PM Does the demo not allow for 1080p? I unchecked 720p and 1080i from my display settings to try to force it, but it defaults then to 480p. confidenceman 08-24-08, 02:35 PM Does the demo not allow for 1080p? I unchecked 720p and 1080i from my display settings to try to force it, but it defaults then to 480p.Someone may want to verify this, but I don't think any multiplatform releases output 1080p on the PS3. Brandon B 08-24-08, 07:14 PM Picking things up and tossing them in every direction was a lot of fun, but I'm sure that feeling wears off during the full version. Exactly my reaction as well. JediMastr 08-24-08, 10:53 PM hmmm to throw an object at an angle we have to use both sticks--VERY hard to aim that way, but with practice, it might be useful...or we can bring an item close to us and force push it in any direction but heavier items don't go far at all at the demo's skill level. the lightsaber isn't the main focus when it comes to combat in this one, but then again we aren't playing "jedi" in this one either, so I'll roll with that. still a day one purchase for moi gpthree 08-24-08, 11:19 PM Yes, the Dark Forces series was a PC series. Dark Forces was also out for the Playstation. zetram 08-24-08, 11:27 PM I hope there will be some puzzle elements in this game. Seems there are some platforming. MotoATX 08-25-08, 03:24 AM Why is it, when walking around you kick up dust or dirt? The floors look shiney and show relections like someone just buffed them. If you were on Tattooine, then dust or dirt would be a must. My 9yr old son loved the demo. We'll rent it, put our money on LBP. confidenceman 08-25-08, 04:40 AM I hope there will be some puzzle elements in this game. Seems there are some platforming.I suppose it's possible, but I wouldn't expect anything more complicated than what you see in the God of War games. I've played through this demo a bunch now and really am liking how the game feels overall. Combos with the different force powers work great and become smoother with practice. My gripe with the God of War games was that there was little reason to vary your combos and weapons. But in this game, there seems to be a pay-off to using different combos/powers in different situations, especially when you play on the harder difficulties. Ok, so the enemy AI isn't great, but that's irrelevant in a hack-n-slash title. I can't think of a single hack-n-slash game where I would even want smart enemies. The camera's a bit sluggish, but I bet you that will be adjustable in the retail version. That demo-ending QTE is terrible. Just gets worse each time I play through the demo. Horribly timed. Horribly integrated. Totally distracting, annoying, and unnecessary. And I do wish that the saber would do more gruesome damage. In a game, severed limbs are always a plus. aquasal 08-25-08, 08:16 AM finally got a chance to play demo over weekend, pretty weak imo, like others stated Jedi Acad and Dark forces where way better than this, rental at best. Loks liek cut scenes will be best thing about it, story line looks good though. smastroyin 08-25-08, 08:31 AM I am thinking that part of the problem is that they put this game across so many platforms. If they had made it PS360 exclusive, then maybe some of these issues would not be there. Maybe I'm wrong. But things like the disappearing rubble and dead guys screams "last gen" to me. This seems more like a pretty PS2 game. dragonyeuw 08-25-08, 08:33 AM All this Jedi Knight talk is making me want to fire up my old copy of Jedi Outcast for PC.Glad I never got sold it off... tattootearz 08-25-08, 03:18 PM Played through the demo (4) times... (2) of which on the Jedi-Knight level.... I LOVE THIS GAME! I hate the disappearing enemies & debris though... wish they could have been a bit more creative with that. However, the implementation of The Force, is sick..... As we say on my side of town, "this game is CRACK!" dogdoctor 08-25-08, 03:32 PM I know it's not a pet peeve of some, but where's the inverted look controls? I was fighting my controller/brain the whole time with the force throwing of objects. As for the QTE at the end: PIA IMHO. smastroyin 08-25-08, 03:44 PM The look inversion is in like the 3rd menu of the options which you can only scroll through using L1/R1 and which loads every screen. Seriously, I hope the game is a much more finished product than this. God of War II was a more finished product that this, just with less rich textures. I was actually discussing with a friend that their implementation of force powers combined with low memory requirements gameplay (e.g. disappearing baddies) tells me that this will probably be the best gameplay on the Wii. but how about just making a Wii lightsaber game and giving PS360 guys a real game for themselves. I know I am harping on this a ton, but I wanted so badly to like this game. This demo experience has been like finding out your hot girlfriend doesn't like sex. Protopet 08-26-08, 02:14 AM I thought it was cool. I had no issues with aiming objects with the force and I got the QTE on the first try. It would be nice if there was a lot of combos in the game, but there was enough in the demo. I liked combining the saber strikes with the push and lightning. Also, throwing the saber at an enemy in air was awesome. The targeting system could be better though. joeblow 08-26-08, 10:48 AM Someone may want to verify this, but I don't think any multiplatform releases output 1080p on the PS3. There are quite a few multi-platform games that can display at 1080P if your HDTV needs it to. Here's a partial list: All Pro Football 2K7 College Hoops 2K7 The Darkness Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer Full Auto Harry Potter Marvel Ultimate Alliance NBA 2K7 Ninja Gaiden Pirates of the Carribean Street Home Court Transformers The Movie Virtua Tennis 3 bryansj 08-26-08, 12:22 PM Seriously, I hope the game is a much more finished product than this. The likelihood of the final game improving over the finished product is very very slim. When was the last time a demo was released that didn't reflect the final version's gameplay and graphics? Seeing how this is a demo and not a beta I think it is safe to assume that this is what is being released. I initially thought the game was pretty neat until the repetitive corridors and enemies sunk in. It reminded me of Doom 1 level design with PS2.5 graphics. I agree with the other poster that this would have been a better game if it was limited to the 360 and PS3. sbaillar 08-26-08, 12:57 PM This might be an obvious question to those who finished it: When I fight the AT-ST...it shows the different buttons (x) and ([]) and I hit them but I just get stomped and I keep doing that. What am I supposed to do there? I can get him down to like 10% but then he ends up just stomping me and I die. I throw all the debris at him but he kinda just shakes it off. What am I doing wrong? Thanks. saiga6360 08-26-08, 01:11 PM The QTE are a pain. My guess is it is quite unforgiving with the timing so just keep trying. Don't bother trying to force throw stuff, just get real close and do super jump and keep slashing until you get the QTE again. You'll know you got it down when the QTE buttons turn green. zetram 08-26-08, 02:13 PM After playing it on a harder level, the game is a bit more interesting. I still think it's too hack and slash, w/ little technique. I'm sure more combos will come available though. Two gripes: The Empire soldier blast don't hurt the Rebel soldiers. I tried a rebel between me and a Empire gattling laser.... and the shots just went through him. Also I wish reflecting laser beems was something you could control and use against your opponent. I think I might have hit a soldier w/ his own beem once after about 60's of holding the block button. ppshooky 08-26-08, 02:36 PM This might be an obvious question to those who finished it: When I fight the AT-ST...it shows the different buttons (x) and ([]) and I hit them but I just get stomped and I keep doing that. What am I supposed to do there? I can get him down to like 10% but then he ends up just stomping me and I die. I throw all the debris at him but he kinda just shakes it off. What am I doing wrong? Thanks. Took me several tries. Here's a couple of ways I did it: 1) Pile a bunch of debris before the area that activates the elevator with the AT-ST on it. As soon as you get a lot, activate the elevator and start tossing the crap at the AT-ST. In fact, hit it before it gets to the top. 2) The easiest method I did, was jumping around and hitting it with lightning and force push. Both will damage it and get it to stop attacking you briefly. Lightning zaps the stormtroopers too, so you can hit multiple people. Force push will push the stormtroopers away and will push grenades back towards the troopers and the AT-ST. While your force is recharging, jump around and dodge the blasters. TyrantII 08-26-08, 03:40 PM Well, finally got to downloading this and trying it and I’m pretty disappointed, sadly. Dark Forces and the Jedi Knight Series were much more polished, and the combat and force powers were better. Can’t say anything about the story yet obv. I read the complaints here about the disappearing objects, but had no idea just how bad it is. Fling a droid against a wall and it explodes? WTF!? All they need to do is include a horse carriage and buggy for a family guy spoof section! There’s no reason for this in current gen games, and it’s lazy and distracts from the game. Some enemies even fade out standing up if they die and don’t fall down fast enough. The mechanics are all right, but feel very loose and limited. The fact that when using a force grab you’re complete exposed to attacks and are forced to be stationary in one spot is absolutely horrible. The AI is very weak, and I assume it’s the case because of the problems with the force grab implementation. If there’s anything the sixaxis was meant for, this would have been a perfect implementation, thus allowing you to manipulate a object through motion control, while still moving around protecting yourself. Why they didn’t allow this on the PS3, who knows…. Blocking is useless, as there’s no way to block and move (unless I’ve missed something). Dash is cheap and mostly useless and only in there for when you meet some crappy situations / over powered AT-ST’s. Also pretty sad that it looks like the Euphoria engine has been nuked since it’s tech demos. The badies really don’t try to protect themselves like they did in the demo’s and will only occasionally hold on to objects / people. Haven’t seen one instance of reaction / awareness to level / world objects yet such as railings, doors, fixtures, ect. This title, some serious work before release it does need…. Jedi Knight, it is not. bryansj 08-26-08, 04:24 PM This title, some serious work before release it does need…. Jedi Knight, it is not. In one of their videos, they mention that other companies are developing the other versions. They also said that the non 360/PS3 versions will be a little different(other than the graphics) like the story and locations. The demo plays just like the Jedi Knight games and I know personally at least 8 people that play or have played them. Once you play a game like this on PC, it's hard to go back to a controller. They obviously were going for something similar, but it’s still lacking in so many areas compared to the JK series…. Can I ask who the hell thought that a AT-ST radial damage leg stomp was a good idea? You’re supposedly the most powerful Sith, yet a walking tank stomping the ground from 10 feet away not only throws you off balance but hurts you…? It's a possible rent for me, just for the story. Given the similarities of programming between 360 and PC, I hope they change their minds and port it over, even of it's 6+ months from now. vassillios 08-27-08, 12:38 PM After playing the demo, this game has now slid off of my Buy list. Martez 08-27-08, 12:44 PM This game is no Jedi Knight. frankthetoad 08-28-08, 11:18 AM I finally played last night and thought the basic concept was awesome. The last SW game I played was JK Academy on the XBox...loved that one. Putting the graphics aside, I think I'll go with the Wii version to get the extras... number1laing 08-28-08, 11:21 AM The demo of the game was pretty decent, I liked the physics and it was fun flinging and pushing guys around... but all the crates all over the place was kind of ridiculous and the "QTE" at the end was awful. I had no intentions of buying this and still don't but it seems like a decent enough game. JeffMarg 08-28-08, 01:28 PM I enjoyed the demo. I completed it on the Sith Warrior difficulty, which was definitely more challenging and required some strategy and patience. I agree with previous posters that the force powers were a little weak (speed, jump) but if this is like the Jedi Knight games, they should improve as you advance. Hopefully you will be able to block while moving, move while grabbing, and deflect bolts back toward the enemy. I've been saving a Best Buy gift card since Christmas for this one! DubBucket 08-28-08, 03:53 PM I agree with previous posters that the force powers were a little weak (speed, jump) but if this is like the Jedi Knight games, they should improve as you advance. Hopefully you will be able to block while moving, move while grabbing, and deflect bolts back toward the enemy. That's all I could think about while playing it. They have a perfect opportunity to make a challenging and rewarding combat system.. I hope they don't screw it up. MSmith83 08-30-08, 12:35 PM I played the demo and can safely say that it has some of the best game audio I have ever heard. The atmosphere it creates is just incredible for a video game, and the LFE channel and low bass in general comes through with extreme vigor when it makes the most sense. The Star Wars universe has truly come to life with this game. As for the gameplay, it's really fun once you get used to the somewhat awkward feeling control mechanics. Kevuda 08-30-08, 02:43 PM I thought the demo was ok. Picking things up and tossing them in every direction was a lot of fun, but I'm sure that feeling wears off during the full version. When it came down to the basic gameplay, like fighting the AI, I found the combat to be lacking that polished touch that you find in god of war (like the variety of combos available from the start, and the different approaches to killing enemies with your blocks/dodges/reflects/etc) I just thought I'd revise a bit and say that I tried the demo out again today on the hardest difficult and had quite a bit of fun with it. This time I knew how all of the moves worked and found myself rolling combos better than my first attempt. There also seemed to be more enemies on this difficulty, which made it more fun, challenging and fluid IMO. It might still be a rent for me, but now I'm definitely looking forward to it! t-ray 08-30-08, 07:20 PM I might actually buy this game now *because* of the demo. I must admit that I've never liked a starwars game that I've played. This game to me, at its most basic, combines the fighting/actions of God of War with the Gravity gun from Halflife2; though neither is implemented as well as the games I mention. I have one complaint that really did irk me. I play with a reversed x axis for the camera. I'm glad the demo allowed this configuration. However when controlling anything with the force with the right stick, I would prefer a normal axis(weird I know). Every time I grabbed something with the force, I would move it, then have to reverse course. Hoggie 09-03-08, 05:54 PM I am on the fence about this one. I wasn't planning on buying it, even though I am a Star Wars junkie, but I thought the demo was really cool. I really like the graphics and force powers. Don't forget they will get much more powerful as you progress in the game. I also like the GoW button sequences. Like everyone else I wonder what battling Jedi is like. On a side note, how cool is it that you can grab a structural beam and bend it out into the flight path of a tie fighter and wam! imperial explosion! If you haven't done that on the demo its a must. |
