Hi, I'm new to DTV. But I'm really surprised to see channel numbers like 112-38, 112-235, 125-456 showing up after scan. I'm using COX cable btw.
I know channels like 7-1,7-2,7-3 are normal due to multicasting. However, those channels with large minor numbers really confuse me. Most of those channels are not viweable due to weak signal or scrambling. But when they do show up, they're nothing but the same channel as the minor number indicated.
Something is broken here. I'm just not sure it's my new HDTV tuner or the cable company to blame.
Any input will be greatly appreciated.

What you are seing is the actual QAM channel numbers each of which can contain multiple real channels.
Your cable company is not using PSIP to show the short channel names such as 2-1.4-1,7-1 etc.

To the OP...
Comcast in my area does the same.
Non-encrypted Digital QAM channels (HD capable channels) show up as the would via OTA (29.1, 6.1, 12.1, 12.2, 12.3 etc).
There are non-encrypted digital QAM channels (SD only) that show up as 80.1, 125.1, etc..... the same as yours. They are duplicates and/or non-encrytped channels that do not use PSIP and show up as a sub-channel that is detected by your TV at that broadcast frequency.
If you had a cableco provided tuner, it would probably translate those to channels with a channel number/desigantor in the "200+" range. How those channels are assigned is provider specific.
There is nothing wrong with your TV or tuner.

I thought that was what I was saying. The short names if they provided them using PSIP would be the same short names that are used for the OTA digital channels by the broadcasters.

Thanks guys for the info. At least I know my tuner is working fine. Wish my cable company can start using the PSIP standard soon and all will look normal then.
