View Full Version : red pixels while playing BD game/movie on ps3
carlitosvvay 08-21-08, 11:46 AM I was wondering if anyone else here is going through this... i have my PS3 connected to my Receiver (Harman Avr 247) via HDMI to my Sharp Aquos LC52d64u. when ever i play a blue ray game or movie i end up seeing red pixels show up on screen when ever theres a black background. it looks like dead pixels but its not cause i dont get the problem when watching cable... i ended up getting my tv replaced assuming it was a bad set. i also upgraded the firmware on my receiver... but im stilling getting the red pixels always in different spots. i tried to just connect the ps3 straight to the tv but have the same issue... i been getting this since the last 2 firmware updates...
A friend of mine is having the same issue with his... he has a Sony Hdtv and song receiver... connected the same way... hdmi...
does anyone know why this is happening?
RoguishClyde 08-21-08, 12:15 PM You may want to try a new cable; A digital cable is either good or bad no in between. It seems you checked everything else in the equation. Also just guessing here, You may have a ground loop. I had my HDTV, PC receiver and charger pluged into one outlet and my PS3, another cable box, STDTV and PS2 plugged into a different socket. Because the PS3 was hooked to the HDTV essential connecting both cable boxes in the mess of wires I had issues with Audio Humm and display inconsistencies.
bdwright77 08-21-08, 12:17 PM speculation starts with an HDMI handshake issue. I have no way of offering a solution though. From what you've described it seems that the PS3 is the common factor in the problem, so I would consider exchanging or sending into Sony for warranty repair.
carlitosvvay 08-21-08, 12:41 PM i also thought it might be the hdmi cable, so i went to circuit city and purchased the best monster cable they had which ran for $130, brought two, ps3 to receiv er to tv... and i still get the same problem. which isnt cool at all.

i thought that might be the case... which im hoping its not cause i have my equipment connect to a UPS box and it tells me the ground is good. can the ground loop that u mentioned still happen with the UPS?

phew.
Have you checked the grounding issue?
sperron 08-22-08, 02:50 AM Something like you describe could be indicitive of a faulty video subsystem in the actual PS3. My Wii had a similar problem that was caused by a faulty video subsystem.
In searching I did find this (http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=7516828):
Not sure if you got this sorted but i was having the exact same problem with my Sammy.
I tried everything i could think of bar ringing for an engineer visit.
Then some electricain friend i know asked where the power supply was going.
i.e. Straight into the wall socket or a shared adapter.
My Plasma was plugged into a 6-gang extension lead.
I unplugged everything and plugged the plasma straight into the wall socket
and B*I*N*G*O no more red dots - woooohoooo
Haha, and I also found 2 other instances of you asking this same exact question elsewhere.
carlitosvvay 08-22-08, 08:51 AM i checked the grounding, and its good, i have a UPS connected to the outlet, ill get a red light if i dont have good grounding.
heres an update on my problem...
Once i got home, i turned on everything, ps3 -> receiver -> tv. i left it on the XMB to see if i can cause the problem to appear and in about 1/2hr it started to pop up, red pixels around the feed box on the upper right hand side. felt the ps3 and it was really hot, so was my receiver, thing is they're both seperated from each other in their own slot in the tv stand. I started to wonder if its a heating issue... but dont know which one is causing the problem...
so i went and took off the hdmi from the receiver and moved it straight to the tv (ps3 -> tv) had it off no monre than a minute... powered up and left it on again for awhile... NO RED PIXELS and better picture...
can anyone figure out why am i getting the red pixels when i have it hooked up to the receiver? my receiver isnt up scaling the picture, it sends it through... its a 1080p pass through... and why only with the ps3 it happens? with my HD tivo S3 it doesnt give me that problem....
