1080p is nice, but if you have to up convert it its not the same.
Best case scenario what am I getting from DirectTV - I tried calling them and it was like sticking my head in a meat grinder they were so unhelpful.
Also given that it's source limited what am I likely to see?
Does ANYONE broadcast in 1080p?
Most people doing 1080i?
Does 720p predominate?
Do the big 4 broadcasters differ at all or are they all 1080i? are they all 720p?

Short answer is most are 1080i with the exception of ESPN, ABC and Fox with are 720p. Directv passes the stations in the same format they receive them from the broadcasters.

A number of current threads in the HDTV programing forum are discussing Dish's Turbo HD package with 1080p delivery, along with a thread on DirecTV's 1080p. The private enterprise nature of DBS permits direct 1080/24p delivery compared to pulldown (24p frame duplication) techniques required for home delivery via broadcast 720/60p or 1080/60i. Reads like there may be some startup glitches for this new DBS format into homes. -- John

I have an MDU(?) setup so I am just waiting for the office to open up before I go in there. I have had enough problems I am going to get it in writing that I will have the full package available before I go buy a huge HDTV and then can't get service. One more reason I hate my new apartment complex

Check to see if their MDU supports the newer MPEG4 sats, if it doesn't and you have a balcony pointing south you may need your own dish.

The superbowl was broadcast in 1080P OTA.

I don't think so, no one broadcasts in 1080p.

Um, no, it was shot in 1080p for archiving purposes, it was still broadcast in 1080i or 720p.

The first favorable outcome EVER with my Apt Complex/MDU office - They are upgrading my building's dish for free - It will be done in a few days.
