View Full Version : If Two Completely Different HDTVs Use the Same Menus... aerodynamics 08-22-08, 02:25 AM does this mean they have the same video processor? I'm not sure what made me think this but I wanna say I read it somewhere. Gary McCoy 08-22-08, 02:14 PM No, that's not what it means. The same menus imply only that the user interface board is the same. This often happens because there are many fewer manufacturers than name brands, because many brands use "contract manufacturing" where somebody else builds and ships the products, sometimes with more than one logo. The contract manufacturer customizes the firmware so that each brand gets an individual brand/logo displayed, and unused features are grayed out in the menus. Unfortunately the video processor is a seperate board (and it's often refferred to as a "Frame Rate Converter" or FRC board) and which one is in use depends upon how much cost that particular OEM customer can tolerate. Thus top-end brands like Pioneer tend to use very high quality VP's like HQV, mid-range products like Sony/Samsung/Panasonic may use Micronas/Faroudja/etc., while low-end sets make use of off-brand VP's. aerodynamics 08-24-08, 08:32 AM Thx for the clarification. I was just wondering because I noticed the Insignia plasma I saw at BB a few days ago had the same menus as the Element LCD in my mom's bedroom. |
