Does the E500 represent the first player in the XDE line? I read the inital press release, but it didn't mention any other forthcoming XDE models.

I hope so, because the lack of a resume feature is a deal killer for me.

Not playing backup discs was the deal killer for me when I read about it this morning. Then I ran and immediately ordered an Oppo DV-983H just a few hours ago.

I read on another forum there should be a XD-E2 next year, that will infact be cell based.

Who knows...

Are you referring to DVD-R's. My machine had no trouble playing any DVD-R (taiyo yuden's) I threw at it.

are you guys referring to discs burned on pcs or recorded on stand alone dvd recorders (dvdrs)?

i ask cuz i use a stand alone for recording -r discs. and i have a lot of them.
my 2 tosh sd players have issues when playing them. i'd hope the xde would be better.

That Oppo uses the ABT chip which is also present in the A35 (which I own). I might just hang tight with my A35 neither getting the XDE or the Oppo.

yup the xde has trouble playing them, unlike my oppo and ps3.

So which is it? Does it play DVD-Rs or not? or just some of them? I'd like to hear from several new owners of this player before deciding to order one... or not. This is important to me because of the nature of part of my SD-DVD collection. Also will it play SACDs? I have an Oppo that does all of these things but am looking for this Tosh to be its replacement... I don't want to just be adding yet another component to clutter up my system arrangement (and I only have 4 HDMIs into my AVR and all four are currently filled).

BTW, mine are also Taiyo Yuden (mostly) and recorded on a PC with ImgBurn (again, mostly).

they (oppo 983 and tosh a30/35) were using the abt 1018 for scaling only. the tosh uses an emma? for di-ing and the oppo 983 used the abt 102 for di, iirc.

but the latest oppo 983s are using an abt 2010 for both di and scaling with results identical to previously used di and scaler chips.

at any rate the oppo 983 would have a better image than the tosh a30/35 because of the superior deinterlacing.

I think its more of a Zoran decoder that has trouble processing recordables. Samsung player I had trouble reading dvd-r's also using zoran. The ps3 rarely freezes but Oppo so far has been flawless with dvdr's.

This does not look good for my situation...

Hey if nothing else maybe this new player will exert a downward force on the selling prices of other (used) up-converting players (I'm thinking the XA2 or the Oppo 983 specifically).

I hope so. I would love to get an 983 however I am unwilling to pay $399 for a standalone DVD player. I havent had any problems yet playing back my dvd-r's. I used to have a real old Samsung DVD player and it would occassional freeze on my dvd-r's. I have never had a problem with any of my other DVD players (PS3, Oppo, Panasonic, Xbox 360).

My DVD-r's are all Taiyo Yuden burned on PC using DVD Decrypter and a NEC burner. My Toshiba hasnt choked yet but I have only tried about 10 different dvd-r's for about 2 hours last night.
