I am trying to mount a 52" Phillips LCD (just purchase3d from Costco) above my fireplace. The fireplace is full brick/ masonary. My contractor mounted the Simplicity (model SL1) swivel tv mount I bought from Costco a while back ( $200 - $40 = $160) The box says it's fot tv's 30"- 55" and up to 150lbs. The TV is abiut 95lbs.

Upon reading the wall mount manual (now that I actually have the tv), it states that "...product is designed for use in wood stud walls only! The wall must be capable of supporting up to 5 times the weight and monitor combined".

Am I asking for trouble by putting the tv on this mount? Any ideas?

You need to ask the contractor how he attached the mount to the masonry. If it was just with lead expansion anchors, I probably wouldn't trust it. However, perhaps you can grab the mount and hang your body weight onto it to see if it moves. If it doesn't, I would consider it fine for what you want to do.

I will speak to the contracter, hopefully he will remember. I like the body weight idea! I'm about 205. If it holds me, it should be fine. Thanks for your help!

I was just worried about the explicit language about wood stud walls only.

Since the term "masonry" can vary quite a bit in density from type to type, it's simply a matter of them covering themselves for liability. The mount won't fail, the mounting will! Lags into a stud will hold nicely, but mounting into a concrete masonry unit can be suspect depending upon the type of fastener. Simple lead anchors can pull free quite easily. It would be better to use a form of toggle.

Check hot air circulation close to the intended place for the LCD.

I will do that. The FP is pretty large and we only use it with the duraflame log (yes I am lazy!). Doen't seem to be to much heat, but my thermometer will surely tell.

Thanks!

I did put a good deal of my body weight on the mount. Seems pretty sturdy.
