View Full Version : Xbox HD transfer cable - how safe is it to use?
JasonSuave 08-22-08, 02:54 PM So I think it might be time to invest in a 120gb hard drive for the xbox - with all the bigger sized xbla games, and potential netflix downloads coming, I don't know if 20GB (err.... 12.7GB) will actually cut it.
My question is: has anyone used one of those transfer cables to move data from the 20GB to 120GB hard drive? I think I remember hearing that it destroys the 20GB hard drive. So, what would be the odds of something going wrong, and you losing all of your data with the transfer process?
I used it with no problems. It doesn't destroy the drive, it just erases all the data from the old drive. I haven't heard of anyone losing data through the transfer but anything's possible I guess.

Ummm that is what that cable is for...To transfer data from your 20GB drive to your 120GB drive. I have never heard of it destroying the 20GB drive. It just wipes it clean.
I used the MS data transfer kit to transfer about 8GB of game saves and other materials from my old 20GB 360 Pro HD to my Elite. The transfer worked fine for the most part but a couple of my game saves (including Halo 3) were unusable after the transfer and I had to delete the file and start a new game. The 20GB drive was fine although as others have said all data on it was wiped (which is normal behavior).
Overall, the data transfer kit works as advertised but if my experience is anything to go by, there is definitely a chance that one or two of your game saves won't work quite right afterward.

He's talking about using the new hard drive on his old console. All of his saves will work fine.

I used it once (transfered my old 20GB Premium data to my Elite). It works perfectly. No glitch. However, all the download arcades full version can only be played when I signed on to my Live account (before that I thought all downloaded arcades play natively w/o me signing on).

You need to use the XBox 360 License Transfer tool.

Just follow the instructions.
jagouar 08-23-08, 02:54 PM mine went fine... but just an fyi netflix will not be downloading things to your hard drive other than maybe a cache. netflix's stuff is all "streaming".
now there are still plenty of reasons to get the 120 gig drive.... just saying netflix wont make a massive dent on it.
ratbones 08-23-08, 03:21 PM Funny thing is I was about to sell my elite so I wanted to temporally transfer my gamesaves to a 20GB until I get an elite again. Transfer kit doesn't work 120->20 so I had to use a MU 512 to transfer data like twice.
I've called Microsoft twice to get the transfer kit and have waited a month now with no cable delivered. I'm going to call them for the third time, but hopefully they won't claim to have a system (computer) problem which was the reason they said I didn't get the cable the first time.
Slordak 08-25-08, 10:13 AM I believe the reference to "destroying" the smaller drive is in indication to the data on the drive, as in "it destroys the existing data on the drive". There's no actual damage to the smaller drive and no reason it can't be used on, say, an Xbox 360 Arcade system.
It worked great for me when I moved from a launch 360 Premium to the launch Elite. Of course like others have said it wiped the 20GB when it was done.
