ok so I am watching more movies with slightly lower sound because my wife has to get up very early for work. As a result, my release day 60gb (now 500gb :) usually starts kicking on the fan about half way into a movie. It in an open space on a rack with no glass and good air flow.
So my question, is the 40gb really the one that is the quietest? I dont play any PS2 or 1 games so I dont care about backwards compatibility.
thanks
I called Sony support and they told me the fan noise for my release 80GB wasn't normal and they are sending me a box to send it in for repair.
So we'll see how that goes.
The 80gb is quiet. I borrowed a friends and its quieter than my 20gb. I havent used the 40gb yet. I would wait until they release the new skus and get one of those.

Are you talking about the 80gb PS3 that comes with MGS4? If thats so, I think my isn't normal either, it kicks in almost immediately and can get pretty loud. Was it easy to send in for repairs?
My 80g with MGS4 is very quiet.

MGS4 80 gb and it is like wisper compared to my RROD 360. They sent a refurb with a messed up fan, it clicks as it spins.

you are viewing things wrong, it just means you need to buy a louder surround sound system...hahaha

My 60gig has recently decided to start kicking into highest gear for its fan pretty much whenever it's reading from a disc. I cleaned the console (vents and all) in the hopes that it'll help.
Should I be worried about an impending yellow light (the ps3's version of rrod)?
How did you clean your PS3?
I remember seeing a site or thread somewhere with pics but cant find it
