Hi,

I'm thinking of getting a Canon HV30. Outputs in HDV. My question is, can I burn HDV DVDs and play them in my Panny BD30? They will look much better than SD DVDs, correct?

I've done some research but everything's kind of vague or it assumes the reader has some knowledge on the matter. I am new to AVCHD and HDV

ULead video studio 11 appears to do that. I am just not sure whether I can play these HDV dvds on my bluray player.;

Thanks in advance

I know that you can transcode HDV over to avchd and play it in any machine that supports avchd disks (don't know if the Panny supports avchd disks). There will be a slight loss in quality though, but it certainly does still look MUCH better than SD DVD. I also know that you can put M2T on a disk and play it directly in the PS3. You can also kind of trick the PS3 into playing a mpeg2 disk.

What I don't know is if the Panny will support any of this.

Your best bet is a BD burner and BD disks. You can now get a burner for around $250 and disks for $8 each. All BD machines now support BR-r disks and at 28M (more than enough bitrate) you can get just a little under 2 hours on a disk.... and the best part.... no quality loss at all. It's worth the price!

Thank you!

Can you elaborate a little on the HDV to BD burning process: can I transcode HDV to bluray using say Ulead software then burn it as a bluray disk??

If you're talking about REAL blu ray disks (BD-r).... you don't need to transcode anything. Real BD disks can easily be done in the MPEG2 (which is what the HV30 shoots), complete with menus, chapters and the rest of it. And yes.... Ulead will do this. This is by far the best way to place your work on disks. No transcoding, no serious time restrictions (compared to a 30 minute avchd disk limit), full menus, full dolby digital surround sound.... just like a real dvd plays in a dvd player..... except of course you get the TRUE hi definition quality.

You can of course do this without a BD burner but you won't have menus or DD5.1 sound. You can just simply get yourself a PS3 and straight COPY a M2T file (what the HV30 puts out on capture to computer) to a regular dvd disk and it will play in the PS3. The M2T file will play as a data file though (it won't start on its own like a regular dvd). You will also not get DD5.1 sound.... just regular mpeg stereo, you can't use menus, and you can only get 20 minutes on a single layer dvd (40 minuets on a double layer disk).
