View Full Version : Need Help With NAS and Xbox 360

Here's my story:

I had my music and pictures on my regular hard drive and had sharing set up just fine where I could play tunes an view pix on my 360.

I had some spyware issues from the kids using the computer, so I went to a fresh windows install and took the opportunity to put a Buffalo LinkStation NAS on my network. I did all the upgrades to WMP and WinXP Home, putting me at XP SP3. I put my music and pictures on the NAS so other computers in the house can see them, and they do just fine.

Now here's the problem: I can't share the music and pictures to my 360 anymore. I know the 360 doesn't have a DLNA or UpnP compliant "receiver" in it so I know I can't just steam my stuff without a computer on. Disappointing yes, but okay.

I now find that I can't access my music and pix even with a computer on.

On the computer, I set up the the Media Library for WMP on the NAS. The rip directory is there, music folders are there, and pictures are there. I can access the music and pix on the computer and play playlists and slideshows just like when it was on a local hard drive. But I can't see anything on the Xbox now. It just says "no music found".

Any ideas? TIA.

Can't you just do it the old-fashioned way and download the Zune software on your computer and go from there? Or get rid of SP3? heh

Can it see the PC at all?
Since you reinstalled the OS, it may be seeing the PC as a new computer, not the one it was used to talking to.
Also, make sure you enable UPnP streaming in WMP/Zune/whatever.
It sounds like it is either looking for a "ghost" PC or it sees the PC but no UPnP server (WMP/Zune/etc).
Try to change the Music source (Blue button) on the 360.

I turn the computer off and the Xbox sees no computers, then I turn the computer on and the Xbox sees the computer. But no media. I hit "X" and select the Xbox HDD, then "X" again to re-select the computer. Still no media.

I turned the Xbox on and went to WMP and set it up to share the network drive L:\ media folders with the Xbox.

Do I have to do something else to turn on UpnP streaming? It's been a while (2005?) since I did all this before. I thought enabling sharing with the Xbox would turn that on, but maybe there's another discreet step required.

Does anybody else have a network drive with their media that they are streaming to the Xbox via another computer?

As for twonky, the Buffalo LinkStation doesn't seem to support that.

Try going into your windows firewall and deleting each WMP network sharing service exception. Then start wmp up and restart media sharing.. It may help.

Or maybe not.. I should have read your whole post first heh.

Cool. A link to somewhere that explains the install or some more info would be even more cool. :) A twonky website search only reveals a bunch of questions from people who allude to twonky not supporting NAs installs anymore.

TIA.

I've got Twonky running on a Linksys NSLU2 connected to 1.5 TB of HDD running as both a media server and NAS for backup and shared access. Search for "Linksys Slug" for all the info you would ever need for this device.

Except I have a Buffalo LinkStation Live...

I am thinking of buying a Linkstation Live and came across THIS (http://buffalo.nas-central.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=2999&hilit=) when doing research.
I thought I had a little computer savvy, but this process seems pretty complicated...hopefully it's easier than it sounds.

I just found that link and I'm going to give it a shot. Thanks to everyone for the help.

--> They say to use the LinkStation Pro install for the LS Live as the LS Live version doesn't work.

That did the trick. The instructions were pretty good. I forgot to turn off my firewall so it took a few tries to remember to do it. Plus I had to un-tar the "addons" file 6 or 7 times before it actually untarred, which was weird. But it finally did it for some reason and now I'm golden.

I still don't understand why WMP couldn't stream the library from a network drive, but it doesn't matter now as twonky is capable of publishing all my music and pix and playlists so that the 360 can see them. So I've realized my goal of not having to hae a computer on.

Thanks all.

Good to know that works...thanks for the update. I'll probably buy a linkstation and try this setup this weekend.
