Hey all,

Looking for very comfortable reclining seating for listening/viewing. These will replace the low back fabric sofa we currently use (pictured below).

My spouse is really set on HT recliners with built-in cup holders n' all. Me, not so much. As the room is for critical listening as well as movies, I'm not psyched about high back over-stuffed leather(/ette) seating with headrests which wrap around your ears- Far from ideal from an acoustics perspective! After some research I came across Ekornes Stressless and their Arion 2007 seating here. (http://www.ekornes.ca/ca-us/stressless/stressless_sofas/stressless-arion-2007/) I'm thinking that though a leather covered chair is less ideal acoustically than a porous fabric one, the Arion's complex curved and angled shape will tend to mitigate the reflective acoustic effects through diffraction.

My wife and I visited the local Ekornes dealer today and were blown away by the comfort, style, and build quality but... She insists upon the high back version with its adjustable headrest while for audiogeek-uber-all reasons, I'd prefer the low back version. Fortunately, I discovered that with the seat in the upright position and the headrest in its lowest position, the headrest ended barely above shoulder height on my 5-10" frame, well below my ears. If you watch the flash animation in the provided link above for a few moments you'll see the three seat high-backed configuration in white with it's pair of "Sector" wedges which we are contemplating. I figure the curved three seat array would look pretty stunning finished in black leather and natural beech wood in our room. I'm thinking we have a winner but I'd really like to hear from any other AVSers that may be using Ekornes seating prior to laying out the non-trivial purchase price. Thanks.

Happy Trails!

Hi Vince,

We went through the same decisions you are contemplating and chose a low back Ekornes style. Our visitors have commented on the comfortable seating as much as they have admired our theater technology. I don't think you'll go wrong with this choice, although I'd recommend a style that has a low back with the option of raising the headrest for those who would prefer comfort over audio perfection.

A picture of my theater is here (http://www.cdiem.net/theater/), and further pictures can be seen in the "Construction" section. Our specific Ekornes choice is in the "Equipment" section.

We have the Pegasus sofa in high back and two Orion chairs in our living room. They are by far the most comfortable chairs we have ever sat in. I have a bad back and I could never sit long in a regular sofa.
Most of our visitors have commented on the quality, style and comfort. They are expensive but well worth it. A nice chair makes listening that much more enjoyable.

I have one of their chairs, not in my HT, and I love it. Highly recommended although pricey...

Did not like the love seat as much as the recliner though - the back support was not as good. The recliners are very easy to rearrange - great for gaming vs. movie seating arrangements. The tray tables are not as good as cup holders if you have kids that spill drinks (or drunk buddies on game day)

Hey all,

We tried out the Ekornes but found the Hjellegjerde Fjord line was more comfortable (they have better lumbar support) and bought a love seat for our small space. You can pick between high and low-back, get love seats couches or section theater seating, and special order in micro-fiber instead of leather if you want.

Unfortunately prices are similar.

Have 3 Ekornes Stressless chairs myself. Lovin' them! :)
As for choosing the low- or highback-solutions in the sofas - for comfort go with the highback, for optimum sound from the rears - go with the low back.

Btw. if your rears is placed very high on the walls - go for the high back.

My 2 cents. (I'm lucky to be residing in Norway - Ekornes factories are here - but that don't make them any cheaper, I'm afraid... :( )

I got longer screws for the front screw that attaches the arms and made some swing out cup holders. They swing back under the arm when not in use and are completely hidden. Made them out of 5/16" or 3/8" solid plastic (nylotron or some such) that I had lying around the shop. Hole for the cup to go through. No accidental knocking off the shelf
