Yes, you read that right. If I connect my Oppo DV-980H to my Samsung HLP5063 DLP with Component and HDMI at the same time, will I simply be able to do a comparison by switching the TV inputs? The HDMI should obviously be the better picture, but that wasn't the case with my Directv DVR. Component looks better. Also, standard definition DVD looked better on my old Denon DVM-1815 via component than my Toshiba A2. That means the tv may have a handshake issue, or something. I have to look into that, but in the meantime, I want to do a comparison, hence my question. Thanks in advance!

If the disc is CSS-encrypted, the the DVD player will output no greater than 480p over the analog outputs. So most of your movies which you bought in store will be 480p only over component. HDMI will not be effected.

O.k. so I can do a side by side comparison this way? My Denon shouldn't have had a better picture than my Toshiba on sd dvd, but it did, so that's why I ask.

Yeah, so you can compare upconverted HDMI with standard 480p component at the same time.

Thanks! There should be no comparison, but I got some kind of issue, and I think it may be with the tv.

Just a little warning. This was about a year ago, and I don't know it has been corrected with firmware. I was using both component to a flat panel and HDMI to a VP to a projector. This caused a periodic problem where the colors were all whacked out, colorspace issue or something. Oppo said they were aware of the issue when using both component and HDMI, but I have not heard anything since. I use an HDMI splitter now, so not sure if the issue is still there or not.

O.k. thanks! I just did the comparison, and it is a better picture via HDMI, as it should be. I still can't understand how my (now retired) Denon DVM-1815 had a superior picture via component than my Toshiba A2 via HDMI. That A2 did just go back to Toshiba for other issues, and they sent me a refurbished one, so maybe I better compare that one as well, or maybe the HDMI cable Oppo supplied is better than the one connected to the A2, who knows? Another question I have is: Is there some device that will allow me to connect my A2 to my tv via HDMI as well as my Oppo? Is that what a HDMI hub is? Sorry for what may be a stupid question to some of you people here......I simply don't know:)

The HDMI cable will not change the performance of the video. If the video was poor on another piece of hardware, it was due to poor picture quality into the display, or improper video calibration.

If you want both devices connected to your display at the same time, then you will want to look into a HDMI switch. OPPO has one (HM-31) but you can also find very competitive products from Terk, Belkin, among others.

The video quality was poor on the A2 via HDMI, but it isn't with the Oppo, and it's much better than Component. The mystery to me was(and still is), how my Denon DVM-1815 had a better picture via component than my A2 via HDMI. And now it's even more strange, because the Oppo has a great picture via HDMI. I just got my refurbished A2 from Toshiba as a replacement for the one I sent for other issues, so I'll need to compare them again. It may have had other issues I wasn't even aware of.

Thank you!
