View Full Version : Anybody gaming on a Panasonic plasma with good results?
sebadooo 08-25-08, 04:50 PM I'm looking to buy a Panasonic plasma (either a 42" or 46" - and then either the models pz80u, or pz85u).
I have heard of "green phosphor trails" with fast motion on some Panasonic plasmas. One example is just turning the camera around fast in a third-person shooter as seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kyllx3VaI8 on youtube
If anyone has one of these sets and can report, no - it's all good, or yes I have that problem, that would help me out. Thanks!
halo3rules 08-25-08, 05:27 PM I have a PX80U the 720p model and I have had no issues, looks great and no IR except when game time exceeds 4 hours straight. So buy it it'll look great
BillKen 08-25-08, 05:37 PM 50" PX80 here and great results - very happy with it.
42" Panny plasma here. No problems in the limited gaming I've done on it. Not my primary display, though.
Justin Sain 08-25-08, 06:05 PM I've had the 50" PZ85U for a few months now with no problems and games look spectacular
Running a 37inch panny plasma here. It provides an exceptionally good gaming experience.
jcbaggins 08-25-08, 06:11 PM I have had a 46pz800u for about 6 weeks and just hooked up my elite this weekend via hdmi. Amazing. I use it on game mode for about 2 hours at a time and am totally blown away. I play mostly COD4 and have looked for ghosting and image retention and have seen none. I did no break-in of the tv, must watched mostly full screen and everything on default THX. Best purchase in awhile.
alczervik 08-25-08, 07:44 PM i used to have one a couple years ago and i had no complaints
thejokell 08-25-08, 08:20 PM 42" PX60U and haven't had a single issue.
20Geezy 08-25-08, 08:39 PM 46" PZ85U here and no problems. I absolutley love it!
sebadooo 08-25-08, 09:30 PM Wow, thanks a lot you guys. I feel a lot better about getting a bigger picture with the 85u version, then having to spring for a more expensive model (800u) but sacrificing size to avoid the 85u sku altogether.
50" 9uk that works great.
HB GAMER 08-25-08, 10:12 PM 58 750u with the xbox and ocassion on the 50 70u downstairs. Panasonic Plasma is the best now that they make the Pioneers.
sebadooo 08-25-08, 10:37 PM After reading 50 pages in the plasma>Panny 80u/85u thread, it seems that the only people describing the problem and also reporting their model, are stating various sizes of the 85u version. Can someone with a 85u version check? The way to see it from what I've seen and heard is pop in COD4, or Gears, and rotate your camera really fast left to right scoping around the room in third person. Do you notice glowing yellow or greens temporarily popping up on any surrounding background items such as columns? One person also noticed it while watching hockey in HD, which is going to be a challenge at this time of the sports season.
I play on my friends 85u and theres nothing like that. it's is pretty freaking awesome!
keebler87 08-26-08, 01:09 AM Not the model you're looking at but I have a 42"pz77u and I can see the fringing only on Team Fortress 2 and only when spinning like mad. Still its not as bad as the YouTube video. I haven't seen it in any other shooter/sports/fast motion games though
PENDRAG0ON 08-26-08, 09:05 AM I have a 42px75 and it has been great for gaming, IR is minimal considering the amount of gaming I have done on it. (worst IR came from about 4 hours of Guitar Hero 2, it took a little over an hour to fade 100% from a all black screen.)
Now as for the green trails, yes I can see them, and no it isn't a defect. It has to to with your visual perception and how your eyes and brain communicate, most can't see them at all, some see them as yellow, some see them as green and a few can see every single color separate. (I can see every color) This is an issue with the blue phosphor being too fast and the green being to slow. (to put it simply) Here is the master thread for this effect just to prove to those who can't see it that yes, it is a real problem. (and if you can't see it, don't go trying to see it because once you do, you can't unsee them)

I am planing to get a 40 inch LCD and do a side by side comparison to see if LCD's motion resolution loss bothers me more or less than these bright green trails that only show up on a few games. (CoD4 being the worst offender by far)
bryansj 08-26-08, 09:32 AM Using a 58" Panny here and get great results with XBox 360 and PS3.
dlconner 08-26-08, 11:11 AM My brother has a 42" panny and doesn't have issues. I, myself, have a 50" Pioneer with no issues as well. Newer models shouldn't have to many problems w.r.t. IR/BI/phosphor trailing.
Hedonist 08-26-08, 11:36 AM 50u plasma owner here. Have gamed on this display for almost 2 years without any problems. I think the IR on my display actually clears up before the After Image on my retina I see after playing late at night as well.
Jaa-Yoo 08-26-08, 12:38 PM I have a 50" Panasonic 8UK thats been excellent for games over that past 3 years.
I am able to spot the phosphor trails that you speak of, if and only if i look for them. The severity of the effect can be dependent on your picture settings too.
I wouldnt worry about it, it really is minor and difficult to spot by most people. Go grab your pany set and enjoy!
I had a 50PZ85U for a month. Gaming on it wasn't bad at all. I can see the green phospher lag so that ended up being a deal breaker. It did get better though as I put more time on the set. I don't see the green on the Pioneer Kuro sets.

I've never noticed trails on the 9uk...
Then again, I've never looked for them.
