I understand an outboard scaler can do multiple sources, however seeing as how many people how a lot of dvd's will the Oppo 983 actually cause the outboard scaler sales to decline?

It could be the opposite... The DVDO Edge should be able to do everything the 983 does plus be able to do its magic on other sources in addition to DVD.

I agree. If I would have known about the Edge coming out, I wouldn't have bought my 983 and settle with a player that could output Source Direct over HDMI, which my Pioneer 51 Blu player will do.

Well the price is going to be factor then because I understand $799 for the edge is a outstanding deal, but to the average person $800 is just that a lot of money. I was thinking that more or less for the average person that doesn't have blu-ray yet and just bought a new tv the OPPO at $400 seems a little bit easier to digest.

I assure you, my payroll is quite average... or below. If I had known the Edge was coming out soon, I would have saved and bought that instead of the 983, JUST for SD cable processing on top of DVD. Now I really need to save my pennies for an external VP (Edge or Gefen with Realta), I can't bring myself to sell the 983. :)
