so my 360 finally RROD'd as I knew it would. sent it in, waited 3 weeks or so and got it back. Now, after 10-15 minutes of playing GTA4, Bioshock, even COD2, the console freezes. I don't have this problem with say, the Fable 2 pub games. The console is in my entertainment center which has an open back, so I don't think heat should be an issue. I also moved the power supply to give it more breathing room, but it didn't help.
So I angrily requested more service from msft but I don't want to be without my console for another 3 weeks. Then I read online that there is some code that clears the cache on the hard drive, which some say may help with freezing problems.
Has anyone had similar experience with their 360 freezing? Did clearing the cache or whatever on the HD help? What will that delete? I don't want to lose any saved games or purchased rockband tracks or the like. If it won't hurt, I will try this code before shipping the console back again. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Clearing the cache tends to help if you have corruption with the data files for one game in particular. For example, maybe you turned off the console while the game was booting up and some half-copied files are left over on the hard drive, which then get re-used the next time you try to play the game. However, if you have lock-ups in multiple games, there's probably nothing you can do...
Sounds like the 3 red lights are just around the corner again. Mine done the same thing and then got 3 red lights. Clearing that cache did not help me. You can try it though and hope.
yeesh ok. I cleared the cache and played Assassin's Creed for a while before it froze up (hour or more). I need to test with GTA4 and some other games.
But I think it will need to go back. I never understood how upset people got over the 360 hardware until now.
Yeah that is exactly why when I sent mine in. When it came back. I made sure it booted up and played ok for a few. Then I sold it. Let some one else have the ticking time bomb. Once your in the refurb cycle. It never ends with them breaking more often then a new 1. I had heard there putting in new cooler boards. Opus I believe. Only for non hdmi customers though.

Really? Mine gave up the ghost around the end of year 1, and my almost 3 year old replacement is doing just fine, no fancy new-style treatments or anything.
Lets not spread false rumors that "once you get a refurb you're in the RROD cycle forever" k?
Rumors? Your the few and far between that have been "lucky". Head on over to xbox.com and xbox-scene.com forums to get an idea of how many people are on there 3rd, 4th, 5th etc. And we are not even talking the thousands that have the same issue and have no internet access.

So you're more inclined to believe the vocal few over the silent satisfied customers then?
PS: I'm not gonna deny that your refurbed 360 wont RROD, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that they are ALL crap....sometimes you get lucky, sometimes people abuse the hardware and don't even realize it....sometimes you DO get that crappy repair job that runs for 10 minutes but freezes after an hour.
But its not like "OMG you got the RROD refurb? You're DOOMED!".....thats crap.

+1. Makes more sense than Korn. I got a refurb back from MS and it worked jsut fine, even though it was loud and slow reading content off the HDD. Just because there are a few that expressed their frustration over the forums doesn't mean it emcompasses everyone that had to deal w/ sending in a RRoD. If there was a forum expressing joy over getting a sound and solid unit from MS, would you generalize that everybody is happy with their refurb unit?
