View Full Version : Tales of Vesperia
Johnsteph10 08-27-08, 07:02 PM I searched, but didn't see a thread for this new JRPG released yesterday.
It did very well in Japan -- selling over 100k copies and making the 360 crush the competition that week.
Anyone have it yet?
AHDTVDiet 08-27-08, 07:36 PM I was going to buy it yesterday but it was not yet in stores so I got Tiger Woods instead. I have to go out tomorrow and Friday so I will look both those days for Tales if Vesperia and Infinite Undiscovery. Tales is getting some pretty good reviews, IU got one average review but IU actually looks better to me but thats just an art style thing they are both action JRPGs.
studiotan 08-28-08, 11:48 AM I picked this up yesterday and had a chance to play it for a couple of hours last night. So far I really like it. I'm still getting used to the combat system but the graphics are beautiful and although I would have preferred the option listen to the Japanese tracks the voice acting is very well done. Considering how much voice acting there is I'm sure it just a disc space issue.
The story is interesting so far but even after 2 hours I don't feel like I've really gotten to the "main" story yet. The game is supposed to be around 60 hours so there's a lot more to come.
Overall I'm really excited to keep playing :)
whiskey > work 08-28-08, 12:07 PM played the demo and it just wasn't for me. Too wacky or something, hard to put my finger on
I have it on my gamefly Q, Infinite Undiscovery is first on my list.
Twylight 08-28-08, 02:40 PM this game is fun
pretty standard tales mechanics - whips the piss out of the demo - the demo sucked and did not represent the game at all.
This is an RPG. The defintion of a action rpg. Star Ocean 1,2, Tales of X - same stuff.
I actually enjoy this format more than turn based or real time rpg.
Tales of Eternia (psp eu psx remake) is my favorite game of this type.
This epic jrpg with fast paced combat. I will also buy IU because imma rpg whore.
WilliamR 08-28-08, 02:50 PM Are the graphics really that good? All the screenshots I have seen of this make it look like some old comic book. The graphics seem very weird. Not like Lost Odyssey or anything close. You guys make me want to pick it up when you say it is a true RPG.
Twylight 08-28-08, 02:55 PM Its got that cartoony cell shaded thing going on, but its a full blow rpg with action fighting.
Let me try to describe it.
In LO you attack in sequence with the ring thingy, select an attack, magic, or defense from a menu.
In ToV you are in semi or full control of the main character (choice of 8 eventually I think) and in full control a fight goes like this.
Run up to the mob you want to bash, B,B,B for light attack, then an A for a finisher move, hit X to block for a sec, do it again, switch targets, etc.
Full rpg mechanics, stats, levels, gear, crafting, cooking, etc.
Once you have played a Tales of X game you will know exactly what im talking about. you can set it on 3 diffculty modes and 3 combat modes. I play on normal or hard with full control combat (get a few bonuses for this too)
One of the first bosses was using me for dirty sex, dropped it down to normal and moved on.
Hope this helps - if you are looking for an RPG this is worth it.
Twylight 08-28-08, 03:01 PM dont judge in on the first hour - its 'tard slow for some reason
AHDTVDiet 08-28-08, 06:20 PM Ok, I have played this for about 3 hours. So far the story is pretty good. The graphics are pretty good. Not like Lost Odyessy but more like watching an anime cartoon. I would be hard pressed to tell the difference between this and a cartoon if they were playing side by side, except this may look better because it was made for HD. I am not a big cell shaded fan and LO or IU are more the look I like but this is pretty good like Eternal Sonata.
The combat is not as good as Eternal Sonata to me at this time. I feel like I am doing a lot of button mashing and the controls do not feel like they are responsive. Mind you, I have never played a Tales game before so this could be part of my problem. I am better at the fights now then I was at the start of the game, I think you have to have some kind of patience and realize that you cant just jam the button. Like Twylight said you run up and block (x) or run up and hit B 3 times (dont bother hitting it more... at least not now because it seems to pause after 3). You can then hit A for a finisher move. I am not sure why the free run isnt the default, because I find I do that way more then targetting one guy and running up to him...that just gets me in a pile of guys and I am too busy getting hit to hit back....but I could be doing something wrong.
The voice acting and story are good so far. The music is nothing special but not distracting either. I am not sure what to do in the "world map" or how to tell where I am going, and enemies freaking spawn everywhere so you have to make sure you take them out before they attack you when you are too close to other bad guys or else you will have a hard time.
I did NOT like the demo of this game when I played it. I agree with the statement that the demo did not represent the game. Having an intro where you learn a bit about the controls, and having a clue what the heck is going on goes a long way to making the game fun. Though I am still not sure what the hell a "blastia" is, except it seems to be another word for magic machine or something....and apparently you carry one with you for fighting? I think I will read the manaul now.....
Twylight 08-28-08, 06:26 PM ^^^ put it on manual mode and you can free run
I know later its going to combo central like other tales games - i might keep it on semi auto and work on chaining...
AHDTVDiet 08-29-08, 06:11 PM Manual does not allow you to free run, just free jump.
I hated the demo....that level isnt any better in the game. I hope IU and Mercenaries shows up soon because I have tired of this level and since I dont feel like grinding to beat this boss I guess I have tired of this game. (For now... at least I have college football).
AHDTVDiet 08-29-08, 08:37 PM OK, so I relaxed, took a break...went and grinded my way up to 20, made a Poison Ward which I gave to Repede and took full control over Rita and her Fireballs and now I can beat the boss easily. Still don't like this section though.
SlaughterX 09-02-08, 05:03 PM Just got my LE copy in the mail from Amazon today... too bad it happened to come the same day IU came out, thus it gets thrown to the back burner...
SlaughterX 04-29-09, 03:44 PM For folks that bought the SE version of this game, you can finally redeem (http://www.talesrpg.com/special/) the code that came with it for Vol. 2 of the OST!
kabob983 04-29-09, 03:50 PM I'm actually looking to pick up this game sometime, I enjoyed Symphonia (a little too childish at time but I liked the live action aspect of it). What exactly is the OST? Some special version/download?
SlaughterX 04-29-09, 05:19 PM It's a CD with music from various Tales games.
kabob983 04-29-09, 05:22 PM Oic, nvm.
