Hi guys. I am looking to get a new DVD player. What is the best DVD player that I can get in the $200-300 range? Thanks in advance.

I've been pleased with my Oppo players. See the matrix here: http://www.oppodigital.com/dv980h/dv980h_comp.asp

Thanks WM. I heard Oppo has a macroblocking effect on Panasonic PX60u. And that's the plasma that I have. Any other recommendations?

That would apply only to Faroudja-chip players like the 981, not the 980 ($169) or 983 ($399).

WM, I was also thinking about getting a receiver, specifically the Onkyo TX-SR606 receiver and it has 1080i upscaling powered by Faroudja DCDi Edge. Does that mean it will have macroblocking problems with my panasonic px60u ?

And any other recommendations besides the Oppos? Thanks again.

An Oppo or the new Toshiba XDE-E500 are worth considering.

Most macroblocking reports I hear come from DLP owners, plasma less often. If you're leery of Faroudja for that display, then I would avoid a receiver with that chip.

On the other hand, I'm sure you can find receiver owners who are using the combination successfully. Same with the players. Careful calibration is important. For an example see: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=7270763&&#post7270763

Oppo is the only line I keep up on. If you look at other postings in the forum you'll see other recommendations.

So I'm inferring that the macroblocking problem is an issue specific to the Oppo 981 + Panasonic px60u combination, rather than an overall generalized Faroudja + Panasonic px60u combination.

Would that be a fair assumption? Thanks.

No, my understanding has been that Faroudja risks enhanced macroblocking on displays that are susceptible to it. If there are differences between different Faroudja chips in this regard, I haven't followed the details.

I've never heard that the 981 is specifically bad at enhanced macroblocking, it's just a popular Faroudja-chip player.

From the Oppo website:

The DV-983H features "VRS by Anchor Bay" video processing technologies. The VRS technology suite includes AutoCUE-C™, Progressive Cadence Detection™, Precision De-interlacing™ and Precision Video Scaling™. The VRS video processor also handles frame rate conversion, aspect ratio control and video zooming.

The DV-981HD features video processing with "DCDi by Faroudja" technology and video chipset by Genesis/Faroudja.

The DV-980H uses a customized Mediatek "System-on-Chip" for video de-interlacing and up-conversion.

Get the Oppo 980 or 983, they look great on the PX60.
