I popped in call of duty 3 (the best in the series IMO) the other day and encountered a disc read error. So I popped it out and looked at the back of the disc and there is a wide circle groove etched into the back of it. So I looked at call of duty 2 and it also had a groove etched into the back of it, but it was not as large. It also encounteres a disc read error on the cliff level where you land ashore and scale the cliffs. Well looking at call of duty 4 I cannot do the ship multi level and I cannot even do the single player anymore because there is a thin groove etched into that disc as well, presumably where the ship level data is.

WTF! The call of duty games are the only games of my 20 or so games that have grooves etched into them!! So with that being said I have to say its not my 360 thats doing it, so whats the deal? I remember that call of duty 2 came with the circle already etched into it, but at the time I thought it was some sort of copy protection. So, does anyone else have this problem with their call of duty discs?

No problem here. I've got COD2,3, and 4. I think it's just a coincidence your 360 has scratched both of your COD discs.

Its the 360, not COD discs. My NBA 2k disc is scratched, so is GRAW.

Did you move the 360 while the game was in motion? Microsoft cheaped out and didn't put a piece of rubber between the lens and where the disc sets in the drive. If the console is moved while on and running a game it carves are groove into the game.

If you buy games used to run a risk of getting that. Thats why I quit buying used.

I buy used whenver possible, and have never had a problem.
If you're buying from a game store, just ask to see the disk before you pay for it. They'll always show you.
If it looks like a 10 year old put it in his pocket and went to the beach with it, then just ask if you can have one that's not so beat up.

If you're buying online, you may get bamboozled this way... not much you can do. I avoid buying disks on Ebay for this reason.

Call of Duty 2 and 4, no scratches or problems playing.

I bought all 3 brand new. COD 2 came with the groove already on it from the factory. I noticed it when I unsealed it and looked the disc over. I just thought it was some sort of copy protection at the time like the Playstation logo on the ps2 dvds. COD 3 and 4 did not come with the grooves etched into them but after about 10 times playing with COD 3 it recieved a rather wide groove, about 3mm! And after about 10 times COD 4 as well recieved the smallest grooves of the 3 discs. > 1mm. :( And no my xbox has never moved even an inch from where it sits when I first got it over a year ago. And its only the COD disks? If its a coincidence its the most amazing coincidence ive ever seen, as I own over 20 games and have put easily over 60 games in my console, and the only 3 discs that have ended up this way are the 3 COD games.

Will a dr dvd or gamestops dvd cleaning service fix this??

Doesn't Microsoft still offer disc replacement for this issue, I've never had to use it but I remember them doing this a year and a half ago.

Edit: Never mind it's only for Microsoft published games.

they do, but for a nominal fee...like $5.
