View Full Version : Gain controls not working...
jarrod1937 08-29-08, 07:14 PM I've been making progress on my projector. And after finally acquiring the combo for the service menu i hoped to be able to fine tune the calibration (Blue's gain is too high for example).
But, no matter what, the gain controls seem to affect nothing. I've even turned the blue all the way down from the in menu setting of 110, to at the very least measure a difference, but i still get none.
What could cause the gain controls to not work? Or what could cause the gain alterations to not show using the sensor?
Thank you in advance,
Jarrod
HogPilot 08-29-08, 08:19 PM What projector model do you have?
jarrod1937 08-29-08, 09:36 PM An Acer PH530
GeorgeAB 08-29-08, 11:44 PM This is a cheap business class projector. It's designed primarily for portable use, displaying computer images. Your model has a white segment in the color wheel that enables it to compete with high ambient lighting conditions common to Power Point presentations in classroom or conference room conditions. It can be used for video but only as a lower priority purpose. Therefore, it may lack the features you need to fully optimize it for home theater use. The manufacturer may be using the same menu item list for many models but not include the actual functions in the cheaper ones. Perhaps you can contact the manufacturer to get your specific questions answered authoritatively.

However i am not sure if you really researched the projector well. It is a cheap model, yes, but in no way comparable to a business class projector.
It has a "theater" preset, its 720p, it allows you to turnoff the white segment, and offers all the individual controls you'd expect in a home theater projector. Not to mention brightness actually takes a backseat to achieve better contrast if you use any other setting than "Bright". If this is a business class projector it is home theater projector trying to be one.
Though, i will admit it is at the bottom of the barrel, but it actually produces an excellent image for its price range, projectorreviews compared it to the hd70.
GeorgeAB 08-30-08, 10:04 AM Good luck!:)
HogPilot 08-30-08, 10:48 AM I see from the Color menu that there's RGB controls like you'd see on a computer monitor, but no gains and cuts for high and low end control. Is that why you're looking in the service menu for those?
I agree with George AB on this one - although the native resolution is 1280x720, it looks like it was an HT adaptation of a business projector design. You may have calibrated this projector as much as it can be calibrated.
Although projectorreviews did compare the 530 to the HD70 and HC1500, it looks like it didn't compare favorably. Even the reviewer made several comments comparing it to a business projector. If you look around videogon, the classifieds here, and eBay, you can pick up a used HD70/72/73, HC1500/1600 for $500-$600, and you'll be able to dial in the greyscale on those nicely, and you'll also get a nice bump in contrast ratio.
jarrod1937 08-30-08, 07:10 PM Yeah, after messing with it further, i would definitely say they do nothing. Perhaps the controls are just remnants from a generic menu that is not supported on my projector.
I'll look into getting an HD70, i've been meaning to hook my dad up with a projector setup, so perhaps its time to do a bit of an upgrade. Or not, we'll see how things go.
Thanks for the help guys
