View Full Version : In need of a new DVD player and need advice !
OK my Sony standard Progressive scan DVD player died. What I have is a Magnavox 50 inch plasma that has 1080i ability. It has 720p and 480p too. It only has one HDMI out put. So right now I have the SAT box hooked up with HDMI, and the (blown Sony Progressive scan DVD player with component video cables). Now I have to get a new DVD player and have looked at a few. The Oppo seems to be well received. How would One go about hooking the new one up? Would I run the DVD player to the HDMI and take advantage of that and run the SAT box with component cables. Will I still get HD TV signals through component cables? Or , do I just run the new Up converting DVD player the same as I had with component cables .
Advantages and disadvantages Please !
Thanks CAP
HDMI Guy 08-31-08, 04:57 PM Run the SAT box with component video and the new upconverting DVD with HDMI since DVD will not unconvert over component video.

you could also invest in an inexpensive hdmi switcher from monoprice.com (top of the page), another hdmi cable or two, and run both sat box and dvd player thru switcher into single hdmi input on tv.
What about the DVD player any recommendations? I run a Sony HT receiver and like 1 remote any good Sony up converting players ?
Well a few things changed. I will wait for the new Sony s550 (OCTOBER ) and maybe go that route. The Panasonic DMB BD50 is a second right now ! I cant see heading back to upscalers when I can get both in one player ! Especially since I have the TV to run BD
Denophile 09-04-08, 12:44 AM the players with the reon chip tend to have a particularly good picture and generally upconversion is above par as well...I have had bad luck with my samsung dual format player and will be upgrading to the denon 3800 myself. that one is pretty much the cream of the crop at the moment. Marantz also just came out with a reference player too for the same price.
My comment below is predicated on you not having interest in a full high definition player such as a blu-ray, at this point.
Get yourself a new player with good quality dvd upconverting capability like the Oppo you mentioned - and maybe take a look at the new Toshiba XD-E500 to see how it compares (performance and price).
Also pick up a hdmi switch so you can run everything you want via hdmi. I have a 3x1 switch (3 inputs to 1 output) that even came with a remote that was inexpensive and works just fine. My TV has 2 hdmi inputs, so I run my cable box/dvr on 1 - and my upconverting dvd player and hd-dvd player via the switch to the other. And I still have a connection available on my switch for that possible blu-ray player in the future. And enjoy your new dvd's in even better quality.
Edit: I see you commented on a possible blu-ray player while I was keying . . .
If you decide on a blu-ray, be sure to look into the quality of upconverting of whatever blu-ray player you look at - as many of the blu-ray players are somewhat mediocre at upconverting dvd's. I also am waiting for some Sony S550's and the Samsung 2550 in the wild to see how they perform for both blu-ray and upconverting of dvd's.

the panny bd players arent known for their stellar dvd upscaling.
maybe wait on bd and get the oppo, etc dvd player.
your dvds will be glad you did!:D

So consider getting yourself maybe the s350 that is suppose to drop to 299 and lower by the end of this month. Invest in an inexpensive receiver with at least 3 in's so you can take care of your growing hdmi hook ups and take advantage of the new audio codecs.

i have a panny 10ak--the good side is that it plays every disk I have put in it without a complaint (including dvd-a's:D). The picture quality is at best mediocre both with BD and upscaling compared to my samsung dual format player with the reon chip (which plays about 1 of 3 disks that I ATTEMPT to play despite firmware upgrades.
best picture quality on blu ray-$2000 ($2030 with movie)
playing the movie you want with a home theater full of friends and having it not spit it out and make your 40K eference system look like a defective HTIB: Priceless!:p
luigionlsd 09-06-08, 12:58 PM Since you're only interested in SD DVD content as it is, have you considered finding a cheap HD DVD player? You're limited to 1080i, so any of the lower models would do fine. I've got a 32" 1080i LCD, and a slew of players (HD-A1, A2, A30, BD-P1000 and a PS3), and I have to say, my HD DVD players are definitely my favorites for upscaling. Buy.com has the Venturer player on sale for $60, which is essentially a rebadged HD-A3 by Toshiba. Check it out: http://www.buy.com/prod/high-definition-dvd-player-shd7000-hd-dvd-movies-included-300-and/q/loc/111/209112684.html

I am looking into that option at the moment too. I looked at a few with 3 outs and that will decode all the new formats and maybe just run a S350 for the player. I do want a good up converting player too as I have a lot of SD dvd.
