you can't trust a timer for football. You will need to schedule enought time for the worst case scenario which means a poor DVD-r recording.

An HD-DVDr machine will let you set a high quality recording for 4 or 5 hours and you can edit and split as needed. You will get SD quality.

A third option is a computer with HD tuner. You can schedule to record as long as needed and record in full HD quality.

A fourth option if you are using a Sat or Cable box is a new HD component capture box for a computer, I have not seen a review but I believe it is out now.

thanksTo answer your question directly, there is no DVDR (meaning DVD Recorder) in the US that allows recording in HD. If you want to record and playback in HD, you have the following options. For cable, sat or FIOS, rent their DVR. For OTA, get TiVo-HD. If you are really computer savy, buy or build a HTPC (outside the scope of this forum).
