this is a pattern to show how efficient the scaling on your dvd player is.

Feel free to clarify, but with the information you have given, this test is all but useless. Any DVD that comes with the THX tests is 100x more useful, and the actual calibration DVDs are 100x more useful than that.

the ps3 cannot

I play 4:3 stuff on my PS3 all the time and it's absolutely fine.

The Playstation 3 has overscan when playing 4:3 ntsc dvd. So the test pattern is squished as a result and so it can't be accurately used on the PS3.
If you test and think your dvd player is using overscan then I think the test pattern won't be displayed properly and so will give incorrect results.
