View Full Version : Finally in my New House...basement plans
PioManiac 09-02-08, 04:04 PM Well after waiting almost two years for my new home,
I'm FINALLY IN!!!!
I've been reading and posting here for almost two years to the day,
and after filling my tiny apartment with A/V components over the past two years,
the day has finally come to move my toys to a dedicated "Man-Cave"...in a REAL house.
...a little background
My humble beginnings here at AVS, Sept 2006, 1 Bedroom 500 sq.ft. apartment.
a 10 year old 27" Mitsubishi CRT TV,Yamaha 5.1 pro logic surround sound w/Yamaha 8" powered sub
older Mission bookshelf speakers and a Yamaha progressive scan SD DVD player.
http://members.shaw.ca/VTXtreme/RWAV.jpg
My first HDTV purchase Sept. 08/2006 Pioneer PDP-5070HD , Motorola HD STB (DCT-6200)
http://members.shaw.ca/VTXtreme/RWAV2.jpg
...then things started snow-balling (ohoh, hang on tight!)
Followed shortly by an XBOX 360 w/HD DVD drive, PS3, Yamaha RX-V661 for HDMI and 7.1 audio
Then in the Spring 07' I added some better Tower speakers (Mission) and a real sub (Velodyne)
I ditched the XBOX HD-DVD add-on in favour of a Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player for Lossless Audio and better upconversion
http://members.shaw.ca/VTXtreme/RWAV5.jpg
Picked up a second Pioneer plasma (PDP-5080HD) Kuro in the Spring of 08',so I could move the 5070 to the Master Bedroom.
Another AVR upgrade (RX-V1800), found a second matching 12" Velodyne sub on sale, Half Price!
and added another Motorola HD DVR (DCT-3416)

The plan for the basement man-cave is to start with my 50" plasma and eventually set up for a Projector/Screen (96"-120")

I cant afford to Totally finish the space right away, so this is going to be a long drawn out work-in-progress,
and to make things even more difficult, I will need to work around all my gear after the room is full of furniture and AV equipment.
Not ideal I know, but its either that or leave everything in storage for another year or two...THAT just aint Happenin' :D

malovich 09-02-08, 04:17 PM I must ask, why so many speakers? Also I envy you for having 2 kuros.
PioManiac 09-02-08, 04:22 PM Before I get too far ahead of myself with a PJ/Screen/Rack,
I better get my plasma setup and my wire management planned first...

Last weekend I got into the home to get the basement floor painted,
I chose a chocolate colored Behr Porch/Floor paint in Rich Brown
It was a cheap temporary solution and will make future cleanup a breeze
as well as keeping concrete dust down to a minimum.

BIGmouthinDC 09-02-08, 04:56 PM I have a feeling your wife is really happy.
Look like it will be mint!
Does anyone know if the Roxul safe n sound is any good? I plan on using it to fill my ceiling joists and then just throw up some kind of tile or drop ceiling....
thanks
Aristo7905 09-03-08, 11:00 AM Looks great so far, I have those exact Bookshelves from IKEA, you cant beat them for the money.

BushMackel 09-03-08, 08:43 PM First off, you have a beautiful house. Congrats! And that is a really cool setup you have in the basement - Very man cavey. I'm uber jealous 'cause I don't think I'm going to be able to pull of the same thing with my "second" ht build.
ichoudhury 09-08-08, 11:41 AM You are an insane!
(when I grow up, I wanna be like you) ;-)
So can you list brand, model of everything (Speakers, Receiver, BR player if other than PS3, etc etc (you don't have to, but I wanted to brain storm for my future cave (right now I am not completing my basement ... yet.
scissorfightX 09-08-08, 03:31 PM nice setup.
what's the model name of those ikea shelves?
PioManiac 09-08-08, 04:21 PM I have several EXPEDIT Bookcases from IKEA,
and LACK tables/shelves along my front screen wall
http://www.ikea.com/PIAimages/59531_PE165422_S3.jpg (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50103086).http://www.ikea.com/PIAimages/35486_PE126286_S3.jpg (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40047675)
I used 1 small Expedit bookcase (standing upright) and 1 large Expedit side-by-side along the back wall
and laid a couple small units on their sides for my side surrounds/lamps.
LACK TV stand up front is low enough to hold my center channel and components, a couple LACK side tables on either side for my PS3's
http://www.ikea.com/PIAimages/59638_PE165526_S3.jpg (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40105340).http://www.ikea.com/PIAimages/57544_PE163126_S3.jpg (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40104270)
I furnished my entire room (minus the power recliners) from IKEA,
4 Bookcases, TV Stand, Floating Shelf, 2 Side Tables
2 Floor Lamps and 2 smaller Table Lamps... all for under $700.
Area Rugs from Home Outfitters came to about $250
(for two 5x8's and a 4x6.)

subzero_wrx 09-10-08, 07:39 PM hey piomaniac...my 5070hd crapped out on mr after paying $3600 for it 2 years ago. Master card will give me a new 5080hd as a replacement from future shop. I can upgrade to a 5020 1080p set but they run $4k and the 5080 is now $2k so i would have to fork out another 2 grand. My question is should i stick to the 5080hd? or go 5020?
is the 5020 worth double the price of the 5080? i sit sbout 8 feet from the tv.....thanks
SouthernSaltine 09-12-08, 09:24 PM Very nice setup. What type of recliners are those? Im looking to get some myself and those look the ticket!.. Oh and did I say NICE SETUP!
PioManiac 09-14-08, 11:27 AM Very nice setup. What type of recliners are those? Im looking to get some myself and those look the ticket!.. Oh and did I say NICE SETUP!
I actually found this at a local furniture store (Finesse Furniture in Alberta)
and cant confirm yet whether it's an actual "Berkline", it's likely knock-off.
All I know for sure is its real leather, soft as buttah! and I sunk into it like I was sitting in a cloud.
When I hit the power recline button I feel the stress of the day melt away leaving my body. :)
Even my g/f approved once she tried it, and said we HAVE to get this.
at $2399 and don't pay for 6 months, no interest I couldn't refuse. :D
http://members.shaw.ca/blackbullet/mcv1.0/finesse3.jpg
I found this pic of a similar* style Berkline labled as a 45009,
but not sure that's correct either, maybe its a discontinued line.
(*note the middle two armrests are wider with drawers)
http://members.shaw.ca/blackbullet/berkline45009.jpg
Moving Day madness!...
My recliners were delivered first thing in the morning, set up and plugged in.
The rest of the move was done in record time in the afternoon...so I've finally got some free time!
First order of business, wire up the rest of the toys of course :)
(I'll hide the wires after I'm satisfied everything is working 100%)
please excuse the temporary mess in this transitional phase. It will all come together soon enough ;)
I'm doing this backasswards by filling the room first, then finishing around my "stuff" :o
http://members.shaw.ca/BJOTF/m6.jpg
I've got plans to hide the back of that ugly old wall unit from the old apartment soon...
For now its acting as a room divider, with one of the tower sections utilized for HD Media storage,
the other one will eventually be used as my AV Rack. ;) ...yes I'm cheap and like to recycle :D

floor by the stairs? Very nice.

PioManiac 10-22-08, 12:05 PM I've only had my Epson 1080UB for less than a week,
and for my dedicated room with total light control,
....already prefer it over my 50" Pioneer Kuro (PDP-5080HD)
Just picked up Sin City on Bluray last night on the way home from work...
All screen shots taken from the same position/camera settings:
Seating distance is about 10', throw distance about 12'.

There's a Lot to be said for size, (when the PQ is still Great)
and the immersion effect when you're 10' from a 9' wide image was enough to convert this Kuro fan

I'm very pleased with the Contrast/Black Levels of the Epson Powerlite Home Cinema 1080UB :D
Bluray movies through my PS3 look fantastic. Clear, clean and razor sharp just like my Kuro
..I just wish my $100 camera was better for taking screen shots because it looks so much better in person.
Okay, the PJ wins for size, but size isn't everything right? How about the "Quality"?
Plasma vs Projector round 2
50" Pio vs 120" projected image but this time the photo cropped to the same size. ;)
My 50" Kuro from last year in my old apartment , aprox 4' diagonal (Eagles HD DVD)

My Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 1080UB at 120" ...10 FEET diagonal
http://members.shaw.ca/piomaniac2/eagles2.jpg
Colors, skin tones and shadow details look pretty good to me ;)
...the only question left in my mind is why didn't I do this years ago?
:)

bee2427 10-23-08, 10:01 AM hey PioManiac I've been considering getting the private collection santa fe. You said that your initial reaction was that you felt like you were sitting on a cloud. What are your positives and negatives on them now that you've had them for a couple days and when the chair fully reclines does your head still face forward or more towards the ceiling?
PioManiac 10-23-08, 10:50 AM hey PioManiac I've been considering getting the private collection santa fe. You said that your initial reaction was that you felt like you were sitting on a cloud. What are your positives and negatives on them now that you've had them for a couple days and when the chair fully reclines does your head still face forward or more towards the ceiling?
Well although mine are not "officially" Sante Fe seats,
I'm assuming they are similar based on photos only.
Negative?hmmmmmm, absolutely nothing,nadda
...other than I don't want to get up to leave my basement now,
I just need a beer fridge and a catheter.:D
I've actually had them since August 29th and every guest who
has tried them has asked how to get a set for themselves. ;)
Seriously though,
if the arm rests that slide forward 6" [to cover the cup holders] were changed
to a hinged lid over a small storage tray for remotes/game controllers, I would be thrilled!!!
I dont care for universal remotes, so I currently keep my remotes on a two-tiered table behind my last seat,
its on a swivel so they stay semi hidden while not in use, then within arms reach when I roll the bottom tray forward.
http://members.shaw.ca/BJOTF/remotes.jpg
I may look into doing it myself someday.
I never need to cover the cup holders anyway.
Fully reclined is almost dead flat,
so no good for viewing my plasma, [without and extra pillow]
It may work for the FP if I used my lens shift and adjusted my screen to the ceiling though :)
bee2427 10-23-08, 11:00 AM thanks for the reply, I love the armrest idea btw and you definitely have a good idea about the storage tray... I was actually thinking of somehow attaching a remote holder of some sort to the side of the recliner but I haven't figured out how this would work without ruining the leather.
On the other note you wouldn't consider the chair reclining to a dead flat somewhat of a negative? you must have some very comfortable pillows
PioManiac 10-23-08, 11:34 AM On the other note you wouldn't consider the chair reclining to a dead flat somewhat of a negative? you must have some very comfortable pillows
Okay, maybe not Dead Flat...but close
I dont know if you missed it or not,
but these are fully motorized, electric control so there is no "standard" 3 position *clunk*clunk*clunk* like manual recliners.
You have the ability to stop the recline at any position you find comfortable.
This shows the Left chair upright with slight leg extention,
Middle chair at my prefered position, mid recline, feet up.
Right chair is full reclined...good for sleeping :D
http://members.shaw.ca/BJOTF/m12.jpg
Another advantage is they are nearly zero clearance
IOW, they roll forward as they recline and can be placed as close as 2" from a rear wall.
:)
Upright sideview
http://members.shaw.ca/piomaniac/bc-08.jpg
and with center seat reclined...
http://members.shaw.ca/piomaniac/bc-04.jpg
bee2427 10-23-08, 11:51 AM Yeah I've tried some powered recliners where if you recline into the position that your middle chair is in, you cant even see the TV. However, I think you convinced me, just looking at that picture makes me want to curl up in a ball and go to sleep hehe :)
PioManiac 10-23-08, 01:12 PM The one thing the photos just cant show is how far you actually sink into the seat portion.
They look a bit rigid, and the reason my g/f first said the backs don't look high enough. I plunked myself down anyway and almost had the Big-O right There!
When she saw my face, she immediately dropped in too
sunk in and said OMG! this is the best EVAR!
..Then I hit her power recline button and she turned to me and said get your wallet out NOW!
Piomaniac,
How do the black levels on your 1080UB compare to the 5080? More specifically, which one has darker blacks? Also, is the 1080 close to the 5080 as far as brightness is concerned if you are watching your 5080 in movie mode? Also, what screen gain is your screen?
Congrats on your new setup!
PioManiac 10-23-08, 03:38 PM Piomaniac,
How do the black levels on your 1080UB compare to the 5080? More specifically, which one has darker blacks? Also, is the 1080 close to the 5080 as far as brightness is concerned if you are watching your 5080 in movie mode? Also, what screen gain is your screen?
Congrats on your new setup!
I answered your Q in the other thread :D (I hope)

My screen has a Matt White finish, 1.3 gain
10' viewing distance, 12' throw distance,
Epson 1080UB has not been calibrated yet, in standard "Theater" mode.
Bigred7078 10-23-08, 04:34 PM totally awesome!!! looks incredible! that projector is drop dead gorgeous... im very jealous man! Congrats on the good hard work! Will you be putting up dry wall at all?

andyb22 10-24-08, 04:12 PM Hey man the setup looks great. I am looking into buying a new motorized screen and have a couple questions for you.
Could you be able to provide me maybe by PM if not allowed to post here of who you bought the screen from on ebay. And does the screen have any waves in it at all?
Thanks

I got mine on ebay, $250 shipped to my door.

I believe its the same generic Chinese made units that HTDepot and Monoprice are selling dirt cheap.

No major waves, however I can faintly see several small crease type folds if I look close under a uniform light source where the material may have sat on the roll for an extended amount of time, but it's not visible while a movie is playing unless you really look for it...so it doesn't bother me at all. I'm going to let it hang fully extended for a week or two and see if it straightens itself out. If not, no biggie to me. I cant expect too much for that kind of price.
If you're really picky and want excellent quality without compromise,
then I would recommend buying from a local shop that would charge you substantially more, but guaranty a higher quality screen.
<update> after 7 months I'm happy to report the screen still works/looks great and the small creases seem to have worked themselves out now.
I can only see them if I really try hard on an all white uniform projected image.

Dragon Reborn 10-24-08, 10:44 PM Piomaniac,
Great looking setup you have. Looking at your unfinished basement gives me fond memories of when I did my own basement 2 years ago.
I saw your screenshots of your new Epson projector. But usually, internet screenshots don't really do justice to the picture that you actually see in person.
Last year when I briefly owned a Kuro, I loved how the image had a vibrant pop to it, especially when compared to my projector (Optoma HD72) which seemed muted or washed out with even a little ambient lighting.
In terms of vibrancy(?;)), how would you compare your new Epson to your Kuro when there is:
a) no ambient lighting
b) some ambient lighting (e.g. reading a newspaper would be very difficult)
c) full room lighting (e.g. you could read a newspaper)
?
Thanks!
PioManiac 10-27-08, 10:23 AM Based on my own brief limited experience,
I would not recommend anyone replace a Kuro with a FP unless they have total light control.
I would keep the Plasma for daytime use and ADD a drop down a powered screen/ FP for evening use if you dont have total daytime light control.
I'm pretty new to this, but I think choosing the proper screen material,
with a high contrast gray, and higher gain to suit a room with ambient light may make a difference.
Mine is relatively low gain, 1.3 matt white which is fine for my dark basement room with 100% light control, 1600 Lumen Epson.
If I had guests over who wanted to sit around and mingle, or one that wanted to read a book/newspaper,
I would send them upstairs, or I would have to put the big screen away and just use the plasma.
Having deep rich blacks is hard enough with a FP system,
and adding ANY amount of ambient light will make anything black look gray at best.

In total Darkness, my BIG screen Blows me away!
Better picture quality than a Kuro? no not quite, but a better Movie Experience? YES!
Sitting 60" away from a 60" Plasma is Nowhere near the immersion I get from sitting 10' from a 10' screen!
I am Hooked! :)
PioManiac 10-27-08, 11:39 AM Okay, believe it or not ... I actually started back to work on my room...:p

My G/F helped me pick out a nice mossy green Velvet from Walmart that matches the green stripes in the area rugs.
It was 1.5m (5') x 7m (23') long...but folded onto a 30" bolt,so I had to iron out the center crease.
Still not bad for $38 total ;) and no drywall mess to deal with....yet.

Why do the drywall?:D The velvet looks great! Gives it a warmer feeling.
PioManiac 10-28-08, 06:06 PM There are definite benefits to going with just velvet on the walls...
The walls act as acoustical panels and sound reflection issues are non-existent.
The only tools needed are an iron, scissors and a staple gun.
It's also a one-man-job with virtually no waste and no cleanup involved.
I will need to figure out something different for the ceiling though.

PioManiac 11-03-08, 05:42 PM Nearly lost it all
I was trying to plug my PDP-5080 Plasma (while it was turned on) into a faulty extension cord (that was plugged into a surge protector/power bar),
and zapped a power surge through all my HDMI devices. :(
The surge must have traveled through a daisy-chain of HDMI cables.
and even though it threw a breaker, not everything was affected that was plugged into the power bar.
I've traced the path of destruction to my HDMI cable connections.
Components that were turned on at the time and affected in the blast:
1 HDMI port on my PDP-5080 plasma (still has 3 good ones)
1 HDMI input port on my Yamaha RX-V1800 AVR (still has 3 good ones)
1 HDMI input port on my new Epson 1080UB front projector (still has 1 good one)
1 HDMI 4x2 powered splitter/switcher (Monoprice) flickers but wont HDCP anymore.
1 PS3 60gig (Jan/07)
it powers up OK, lights up , but no video at all, not even through a composite connection.
I immediately took the PS3 upstairs to another TV and got no love :(
I had to grab a working SD DVD player from the Master Bedroom to check my other components
to find out what survived. That's when I discovered I still had several working HDMI ports on everything else. (Thank Goodness for extras!)
MY Toshiba HD-A2 and Motorola HD DVR STB were not powered up, (just standby mode)
so were not effected at all. Everything else was running when the zap happened.
I ruled out a power bar failure because it was not tripped,
plus the Epson 1080UB that got zapped, was on a totally different circuit.
only common denominator was the HDMI connection.
...and just last week I lost my XBOX360 to the RROD,
and was planning to get a new Elite.
(good thing I waited, or it would have been toasted too)
I've already picked up a new 80gig PS3,
but there's a lot of data I'd sure like to recover off the old one.
bee2427 11-04-08, 02:02 AM Sorry dude .. that just sounds awful, I think I would have had a heart attack if that happened to me and I don't have half of what you have. But you seem to take it well so goodluck and lets hope that doesnt happen again, cant wait to see the finished project
PioManiac 11-04-08, 09:47 AM Well all is not lost on the old PS3 after all,
I did a soft reset on the PS3 that disabled the HDMI output,
(power off on back, turn back on while holding front power switch on for 10 seconds, wait for three beeps.)
and the system reset and found my composite connection.:)
I Have a Video signal again!!!,:)
it's only 480 resolution :o, and 2.0 audio, but at least I can recover data from my HDD to transfer to the new PS3 via thumb drive.
I also tested the Digi/Opt port and 5.1 audio still works too. Bonus!
Now that I know I can work around the dead HDMI port and the rest of the console is fully functional (other than no Loss-less audio or 7.1)
I picked up a set of PS3 component cables for $19 at BB (open box item) for 1080 resolution and can use a digi/opt connection for 5.1 audio and use it in another room,
...after all I still have a second AVR and enough spare speakers for another 7.1 system.
Just have to get the WAF for another room in the house.
Any of you convince your better half you need a PS3 in the Master Bedroom?
I did manage to get a 50" plasma in there already, and she LOVES IT!, in fact...she's already calling it "Her" T.V.
and if I dont want to watch HGTV (Home and Garden TeleVision) aka Her Goddamn T.V....
I should go downstairs and watch my own...http://members.shaw.ca/BJOTF/wife.gif
I may have to stealth install the PS3 as "DVD" player first, just to get my "foot-in-the-door"
then gradually hide the surround speakers around the room, under the bed, in plants etc. (maybe in-walls?)
while she's out shopping. :D
PioManiac 11-11-08, 06:07 PM Since the melt-down,
I have really grown tired of plugging/un-plugging my display HDMI cables from my PDP/FP to the back of my AVR
I also got tired of waiting for Monoprice to get another batch of the 4x2 Powered HDMI Splitter/Switcher's in stock so I could replace my fried unit,
http://images.monoprice.com/productlargeimages/48021.jpg
I found another solution on ebay for splitting my HDMI to two displays.
and just received my 1X2 2-port HDMI Splitter Amplifier and I'm happy to report it is 100% v1.3 and HDCP compliant.
Works great to split my HDMI output from my AVR (Yamaha RX-V1800) to two displays simultaneously,
(my Pioneer Kuro 5080, and my Epson 1080UB projector....that's fed by a 35' long 22AWG HDMI cable from Monoprice)
set it and forget it
It's only $38 U.S. (plus shipping)
and small, about the size of a credit card, but about 1/2" thick

If you cant wait for Monoprice to restock their 4x2 splitter/switcher
this one is a good little unit for half the cost provided you just want a splitter and dont need the switching capabilities.

So you are happy with that splitter from ebay? I am looking for the same thing and only need the splitting capability. I want top run from the HDMI out on my reciever to my plasma and to my PJ. Thats what you are doing correct?
Thanks!

fanbrain 11-12-08, 04:21 PM Great looking setup.
Just for your information, sitting 10 feet away from a 120" diagonal screen gives you a 47 degree viewing angle. 36 degrees is normal. An 89 1/2" diagonal screen will get you to THX spec. You must like to sit close at the local theater. :)

At first with full 16:9 content its a lot to take in if there's too much fast action,
but with 2.35:1 movies its absolutely perfect ! It's amazing what you get used to in such a short time frame (3 weeks)
I initially planned for a 106" screen based on the on-line web calculators,
but when I checked out a 106" FP system in person at a local retailers HT room I knew I needed more.
Once I saw a 120" and paced off 10' to watch Transformers, I was sold.
I immediately ran home and added and extra 16" to my screen wall just to max it out. ;)
Even though I have room to move my seating back another 12"-24"
I feel no need to, and dont want to compromise my 7.2 audio setup.
I could also pick up another foot in viewing distance by dumping the plasma for an even wider fixed 2.39:1 screen right on the wall.
That may happen yet ;)
fanbrain 11-13-08, 11:40 AM Sitting 14' away, I'm at 41* with a 2.35:1 screen- I think it's going to be great.

Your Epson 1080UB pics are great eye candy and the colors really pop on this projector. I think I made up my mind, I was looking at the Panny AU3000 but I think the Espon is better from what I been seeing.
But living in America today, you never know who is next in line to loose their job. Scary.

...My little home, and humble 3 seat theater room with unfinished walls,
open ceiling and a painted concrete floor with a couple area rugs PALES!
in comparison to most here who are actually taking the proper steps in constructing and finishing some amazing theater rooms.
Those are the guys that get my respect.
If I actually had the cash, skill and the time, the proper steps would have been taken...
framing,electrical, hidden a/v rack,custom automated lighting,acoustical room treatments,
double drywall w/green glue sound proofing and exquisite finishing with wall to wall carpet, custom woodwork and trim.
My room was thrown together in record time, and its merely "good enough" for now
because I was too impatient to take all the proper steps to build a real room and I really look up to those who have.

daMaster 12-02-08, 01:01 PM Last weekend I got into the home to get the basement floor painted,
I chose a chocolate colored Behr Porch/Floor paint in Rich Brown
Two coats, Two Gallons, $60
It was a cheap temporary solution and will make future cleanup a breeze
as well as keeping concrete dust down to a minimum.
Did you just paint directly on to the concrete floor or did you have to do a sealer or primer first?
PioManiac 12-02-08, 02:05 PM Did you just paint directly on to the concrete floor or did you have to do a sealer or primer first?
No prep required at all, I just rolled it on after I did a thorough vacuum to pick up any dust.
Its a latex base so the first coat was dry within a couple hours, although I waited about four.

hey PioManiac, Congrats on your nice HT setup & House. I'm in the process on finish my HT room & I have a Epson 1080ub, & maybe soon V3900 like you. I just had a few question for you if you don't mind. First off how do you like you Yamaha V3900 amp, it's on my short list ? Any problems or issues you have had with it ? I assume your Mot box 3416 box is from Shaw & was wondering if you had any HDMI issue with it connecting to your V3900 receiver ? Also if you could tell me the price you payed for the amp & where did you get it ?
PioManiac 12-03-08, 09:38 AM The RX-V3900 is the best AVR I've ever owned,
It has more (Network) functions than I currently need, but its good to know I'll be future proof for a while longer this time if I change my mind down the road. In the past two years I've bought 3 Yamaha's and finally I'm satisfied with the OSD/GUI, number of HDMI Inputs and Outputs, upscaling and processing features, standby pass-through mode, and a really well designed back-lit programmable learning remote.
Yes I'm using a Shaw for my Motorola cable box,
a couple minor issues with the STB through the 3900 is it wont HDCP both displays simultaneously. It's not a problem for my PS3, Toshiba HD-A2 or my XBOX Elite though.
The other strange bug with the Motorola box is that it keeps resetting to 480i and I have to manually change it back to 1080i every time I power it up. I suspect either the Yamaha or the Motorola will require a firmware update to correct this... But I don't use it often enough to be a deal breaker.
Mostly using the Master Bedroom plasma for watching cable TV during the week, unless there's a Big Game on :D
I get most of my AV components from a little mom&pop shop in Edmonton,http://www.audio51.net/
My price wont do you much good, but typically I pay $300-$500 under MSRP
You shouldn't have to pay more than $1699 (Cdn) which is about $1360 U.S.
Great man cave and I love your house :)
bee2427 12-03-08, 11:10 PM Yeah, is it almost complete? I want to see some more pictures.... its awesome
You know I was wondering if you was going to build a garage or be different from your neighbors.
As far as the velvet walls go I do like the way they came out. When I first read that you was going that route I was like "IDK" but it worked.
Are you going to use soundproofing drywall?
Apollyon 12-10-08, 04:26 PM Wow...amazing setup, man. Thanks for sharing!
Pio,
Great setup. I'm thinking of doing somewhat the same with screen coming down in front of tv. Do you get any waving in the screen from the heat or a/c turning on? How are you able to split the signal from the tv and the projector so that you can use both?
That screen looks pretty good for such an inexpensive one.
Keep up the good work!!
Bigred7078 12-10-08, 09:23 PM PioManiac,
i've been considering getting the V3900. I can get it at an unbelieveable price and was wondering your input on it. What are some awesome features this unit has? Does it have on-screen volume? anything else good? Thanks man.

Basically i am looking to upgrade my current 34" crt to one of the above options (although would probably be the epson 6500UB once that arrives) which i detailed in a little in this post http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1093502
I have come across many of your great posts, esp pics  when doing research and would appreciate any input you have on the following questions:
-How would you compare the two in PQ? Especially sharpness, detail and color? I wouldnt say i am obsessed with black levels etc like some i but do have a pretty critical eye which is one of the reasons i have waited until my cable co went digital/hd before considering upgrading as i have seen how awful lcd/plasma looks with a sd analog signal.
-How would you compare the two for gaming (especially lag sensitive games such as Call of Duty, Gears of war, Rockband etc)?
-Can you watch the projector adequately during the day/with a light on? Id love to have your setup and i really dont think my S.O. would be ok with living in a dark room just to watch tv :D
-Would you recommend getting a projector as my main and only viewing device?
It seems for many that simply due to the size difference in the screens they opt for a projector for the WOW experience, which i will say definitely has me very interested especially looking at the pics above, however i would love to get your opinion.
thanks in advance
PioManiac 12-11-08, 09:57 AM Pio,
Great setup.
No noticeable wave in the screen at all, but then I dont have ductwork venting nearby either.
My AVR, the Yamaha RX-V3900 has two simultaneous HDMI outputs for dual displays.
PioManiac 12-11-08, 10:10 AM PioManiac,
i've been considering getting the V3900. I can get it at an unbelieveable price and was wondering your input on it. What are some awesome features this unit has? Does it have on-screen volume? anything else good? Thanks man.
-Steve
Its a great AVR,

Most of my comments on the 3900's performance are listed on page 22,23,24
of the RX-V1900/3900 thread in the AMP's,Receivers and Processors section
Link: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1058341&page=23
Yes is can do OSD of volume and short message like input sources, DSP modes etc.

Awe man, don't make me choose! I may lose my username ;):D
...seriously, It would be like asking a parent to give up one of their children.
They are both sharp with excellent color accuracy and performance, with a slight edge to the Kuro for quality, but a HUGE size advantage to the Epson.
Truth be told, I dont use my basement 5080 very often anymore, because I prefer the HUGE 120" picture even if I have to give up a wee bit of picture quality.
You really need to see both demo'd to let your own eyes decide what appeals more to you. There's no doubt I would take a 120" Kuro Plasma if it was available and physically/financially possible...but the 1080UB is SO close to perfect for such a reasonable price its hard not to take one home.
It's a whole different experience as opposed to just watching TV.
I've sat as close as 5' from my 50" Pio at times trying to fill my field of vision and get that elusive immersion, and it just does not happen. I looked into the new 6020's but at nearly $6k in Canada I could not justify the purchase unless I got the "feeling" that I was right there IN the movie/game.
A soon as I saw a well set up Theater in a home I gave it the " THATS IT!!!"
That's the "FEELING" and emotion I want to experience. When I found out it would cost me less than HALF the cost of a new 6020... = no brainer!
Gaming Lag has not been an issue for me at all and I dont notice anything different whether I'm using the 5080 or 1080UB in action sequences. (other than a tendency to DUCK more often when bullets start whizzing around with the PJ on :D )
Daytime viewing?, now that's a tough call as I have no daylight at all.
However I can run the 1080UB in Living Room mode and it is definitely watchable even with a couple small lamps on. You can pull it off in a pinch for a bright sporting event (Football or Baseball game)...but I highly recommend a total bat-cave for movies with darker scenes.
The Plasma is still the King in an ambient light situation.
I also have a small Samsung LCD in the Kitchen, and Pio 5070 in the Master Bedroom that gets used a LOT. So although I could probably give up my 5080 down in the cave...There is no way I could have the Epson as my one and only display. Having both is the ideal situation. The PJ is not meant to be turned off and on several times during the day. The number of lamp strikes greatly reduces bulb life...which could get costly after a while at $350/bulb.
Having a smaller cheaper plasma, perhaps a $1200 +/-, 50" Plasma would pay for itself within couple years and extend the life of your PJ and Bulb(s).
HTH :)
If you ever have a good and properly set up universal remote you will never go back to using individual remotes ever again, When you set up a universal remote up so that it has macros, where you push one button to make all the needed source and output changes, then you will never want to go back to fumbling with all of the remotes.

That pic was from just before my new AVR arrived
The New RX-V3900 Kicks @SS so far, and the Back-Lit remote
really comes in handy now that I'm watching in a Bat Cave.
I even managed to program almost all my other remote codes into the Yamaha's learning remote:
My Motorola HD-PVR, Toshiba A2 HD DVD, Pioneer Plasma, Epson Projector...and even the controller for my Powered drop down screen.
http://members.shaw.ca/blackbullet/blremote.jpg
I only use my AVR remote now, Its fully programmable, Learning, and has Macro capabilities too
and my BT remote for the PS3 ;) ...I saw a $20 IR solution for that at Wally world that I could program into my remote too.
Bigred7078 12-11-08, 11:36 AM Piomaniac,
thanks for showing my the 6th ave deal, but i can get a much better deal through a yamaha factory direct program. but anywho, the resolution reset for the cable boxes has me worried. Is it just a an issue with the Motorolla one's or all cables ones in general? Thanks for the info man.
neverfaithful 12-12-08, 04:00 AM Wow the blacks levels look great on the FP. Are you very satisfied with the Epson 1080UB?
cdoo932 12-12-08, 09:45 PM Piomaniac, that is one great room. I have a finished basement with a Samsung 52 lcd, onkyo 605 with 7.1 speaker and such.I got looking at your thread yeasterday and was so blown away by it that today I ordered a projector package from projector*************. I got the Epson Powerlite Home Cinema 6100,Sanus mount,35' HDMI cable and a Severtson 108' electric screen.I am going to do a setup like yours with the screen coming down over my LCD.I have a few questions on hooking everything up. My onkyo 605 has 2 HDMI in and 1 HDMI out. I should hook my HD cable box up to 1 HDMI in,PS3 to 2 HDMI in, HDMI out to 1x2 splitter (like you showed),then a HDMI to LCD and HDMI to Epson. Right? It works normal if both displays are on or if just one or the other is on right? Also I have a regular XBOX360 with componet out. What is best way to send that to LCD and projector. Man, thanks for your post as it opened my eyes as to how hometheater can look. Next Friday(Dec.19) my stuff should be here and my fun will start. Thanks for anymore help you can be.

Wraith72 12-12-08, 10:27 PM Great theater setup!
My fiance and I added a theater to our house last year. It's not high end (in fact, it's pretty much patched together from my previous HT set up), but it definitely does the job when it comes to movies and gaming (I have a 360 too ;))
I'll post up a link to my user name with some photos and an equipment list sometime soon.
Thanks for the help with my projector selection. The picture quality looks amazing, and like, you said, I'm sure the photos don't do it justice. Looks like I may have picked the right time to upgrade ...seeing the deal on the Epson.
PioManiac 12-13-08, 10:48 AM Wow the blacks levels look great on the FP. Are you very satisfied with the Epson 1080UB?
I've still got one more light wall to cover with some dark GOM type material yet.....this one vvv...and my room will be a Total cave (just the ceiling left)
http://members.shaw.ca/BJOTF/vv53.jpg
Every time I add a little more room treatment (dark fabric walls) for improved video performance, (and better acoustics) My black levels improve.
I found a great 20' long x 42" strip of really thick Black Velvet to go along the top half of the rear wall for $20
If I could only find enough to finish the rest of the room that cheap!
http://members.shaw.ca/piomaniac2/6220000.jpg
Last night I had my Pioneer Kuro turned on, nothing else, room nearly pitch black, no signal at all to the TV (Black screen) and it was glowing grey.
I guess its been a while since I've done that, but now that my room is REALLY dark...
the 5080 was actually looking kind of bright to me for the first time. Either my eyes were playing tricks on me,
or my projected black was just as good or better
So I dropped the big 120" down and fired up the 1080UB,
same thing...completely black screen with no signal...
To my amazement it was as Dark, dare I say even slightly Darker than the Kuro black screen.
I know the blacks start to drop off a little when you start projecting any content on the screen with whites or other colors,
but as you can see by the the last Earth shot....the ANSI contrast still looks pretty darn good.
Once I get my components racked off to the side I'm sure that will help too.
It's amazing how much ambient and reflected light gets absorbed by the velvet...
There's no way a painted drywall surface, no matter how dark, can match material for light and sound absorbing qualities.
I like to call this series of shots from the PS3 visualizer
the "How Big is Your World?" photo's :D

The Epson 1080UB (Ultra Black) is living up to its name...and oh yeah, It's a Keeper :)
Yea that sounds good. I guess those fabric covered, insulated walls without sheetrock are working out for you. Do you think you would have been sound if you used soundproof sheetrock boards rather then the fabric?
Im looking to get a 92" electric screen and put my Pio 5070 behind it like you did (I am not copying, I had that idea for the past 1 1/2, lol), do you think a 92" will have better black levels and better PQ/detail then your 120". I live in a NY apartment.
I am impressed with your setup, I remember talking to you back in the Pioneer 5070 thread when I had the name uptown193 and you had your 5070 in front of another older tv, but some cry babies on here ratted me out for something. I didn't know men are here were so sensitive.

Use a component cable for your Xbox, you wont notice much a difference in PQ if any at all. I have tested this many times with HDMI and Component. However, I know we all love and want that full HDMI digital connection. Or just upgrade to a Onkyo 705 like I have and has an extra HDMI port. :D Happy HDMIing....
cdoo932 12-14-08, 06:05 PM PIO, so i can watch the projector with out the LCD running and vice versa with that splitter? Also I thought that the Onkyo could do componet to HDMI but I could never get it to work. I worked on it last night and finally got it. I had to set the display to 1080i instead of 1080p and it worked. Thanks Pio. Also I have a 108 inch screen coming and I will have 18ft of throw. You think that will be good. Projector is Epson 6100.

Hey uptown! Good to hear from you Bro'
You must of hurt somebodies witto feewings huh? Haha
I had to go back to Jan. 08 to see WTH happened ;) Funny $#!+ !!!
Ya I'm not too anxious to do any sheetrock now, the audio is pretty good... I still need to finish my bass traps for the rear corners though.
The twin Velo's shake the whole freakin house, but the real deep LFE frequencies seem to be canceling out right at my seating position.
I suppose it would be better if I corner loaded my subs instead of front firing.
The Bass is really emphasized in the corners of my room right now...almost makes me want to go sit in the corner to watch. :D
I may even try turn my room layout 90º one day so I can increase my throw distance and bump the screen up to 150" :D
That's another benefit to leaving the sheetrock off the walls/ceiling.
My layout is still flexible and nothing is permanent. ;)
My room is 16'-9" x 14'-5" and normally peeps choose the short wall as the screen wall for a longer throw, bigger screen and two rows of seating.
I chose the go with a wider room, shorter throw because I didnt want the side seats so close to the side walls. (10' wide 3-seater)
My g/f and I are usually the only ones watching movies, and for game nights its just my two younger bro's and me so I didnt see the need for two rows of seating.
I cant see that going to a 92" screen would make the blacks any better for a FP,
but it would make the pixel structure smaller and allow you to sit closer without getting the SDE (screen-door-effect) ;)
What kind of throw distance and seating distance are you looking at?
Get the biggest freaking screen you can get your hands on!
120" at 10' freaking Rocks!

Sounds like you're good to go,
18' is a pretty long throw, but it looks like you'll have plenty of Lumens
(provided you can control your room lighting).
Do you know what gain your screen is?
Any chance you can ceiling mount your 6100 closer to the screen?
cdoo932 12-15-08, 07:13 PM Pio, the screen is a 1.1 gain 108 inch Severtson. When i get my stuff delivered(Friday I hope) I'll put the screen up first and see what the pic looks like before I install the projector for good. If need be i can move it closer. Thanks for your help.

LOL, yea man whats up, long time. You read some of the post I see huh, yea it was funny.
But yea i Have that same problem with my sub, I have a DefTech Sub and if I sit by my computer desk which is only like 3 feet from my normal sitting place on the sofa, the bass sounds so much more deeper, but then if I sit in the middle of my sofa its less. I guess I have to to the sub trick where I put the sub on the sofa where I sit and then walk around the room to see where I hear the bass best and then put the sub there. What you think? You ever try that technique?
Anyway, but Yea, I have about anywhere between 10' to 12' throw distance, but I think that would be to close for a 120" screen, I don't want my eyes burning while watching a movie. That's why i wanted to get a great 92"-100" screen. I think that is good enough for an apartment theater. Don't your eyes burn sitting at 10' with 100'?

I'm fairly certain that corner loading my subs will give me the Max LFE,
but simply putting traps in the corners would be easier, look better, and still solve my standing wave issues. ;) Hopefully, for my G/F's sake :D
I've already got a couple bundles of R-14, I just have to stack them in the corners to see how well it works before I start actually building anything.
My eyes adjusted to my 120" screen at 10'-6" viewing distance within a couple weeks. At 1.2 screen widths, its the perfect seating distance for me
(120" Diagonal screen is about 8'-9" wide x 1.2 = 10'-6")
My eyes are exactly 10'-6" from the screen.
My PJ's throw is 12'-6" (distance from lens to screen)
and I double checked before hand it would throw 120" from at least 12'
http://members.shaw.ca/BJOTF/allscope.gif
When doing your PJ research its helpful to use the calculator at projector central. Plug your numbers in and make adjustments.
Not all PJ's will work for every room configuration
Mounting locations, lens shift, zoom, lumen output, screen size and gain all have to work for your rooms parameters.
You'll also want a PJ that has minimal lag or motion blur for Gaming ;)
Make sure you're not sensitive to DLP rainbows too.
LCD's in general are more flexible for mounting locations and lens shifting.

If there's anyway for you to demo several systems in person that may be best for you.
A demo can also give you a feel for what screen sizes your eyes can handle at different distances.
Wow, pretty sweet. I had a friend do the same thing with putting velvet on the wall. Only he wrapped them around rigid insulation and used velcro to attach the panel to the studs. Worked and looked great.
daMaster 12-29-08, 07:10 PM Ya, Saawariya was a great movie.
I love your Google SketchUps. Did you follow a tutorial for doing room layouts in SketchUp? I tried to plan my basement using it but found it quite difficult to use.
andyb22 01-01-09, 07:54 AM Hey man the pictures are still looking great. I know your screen is 120" and I was wondering how close do you have the projector mounted to the screen?
MattPutt 02-06-09, 05:10 PM Any updates??? This has to be one of my favorite threads to look at!
SwampDonkey 02-06-09, 05:20 PM Hey man the pictures are still looking great. I know your screen is 120" and I was wondering how close do you have the projector mounted to the screen?
dude... seriously? This is only 4 pages deep. He's answered that.
PioManiac 02-06-09, 05:51 PM I desperately need to get some more tools now that I'm a home owner.
I have a hammer, measuring tape, level and a staple gun...and not much more. No power tools at all (except a drill).
So I decided to just staple some deep chocolate brown Chanille fabric up on the side wall.
Lazy and cheap...but effective for a temporary solution on budget install :)
http://members.shaw.ca/piomaniac/bc-18s.jpg
Pretty dramatic change ... (bottom half of rear wall is next, but I ran out of material)
http://members.shaw.ca/piomaniac/BW06.jpg
Here you can see where reflected light can still bounce back into the room
http://members.shaw.ca/piomaniac/BW20.jpg
No more reflected light bouncing off my screen onto the insulated wall to my left ;)
Sometimes you dont realize how much a distraction the lighter walls are to your eyes until you remove the distraction.
With no peripheral interference my eyes are very happy now, not to mention the PJ's performance is up yet another notch towards perfection.

Now that's pretty darn close to Kuro Black!
Apollyon 02-09-09, 07:56 AM Yeah, building/owning a house quickly led to a rapid expansion of what tools I have. I went from a few hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches and tape measures to miter saws, table saws, jig saws, etc in short order. Got tired of borrowing them from friends and family. Once you have them you find yourself tackling more and more projects. You should see the absolutely ridiculous cat house I made for on outdoor cat I don't even like. Shingled, insulated with a hinged roof so I can clean out the inside as needed.
Nothing wrong with being a home improvement dork, man...especially one with a good taste in electronics :)
PioManiac 02-09-09, 10:47 AM Despite my lack of tools, progress on the room hasn't totally come to a grinding halt just yet :D
Check out the difference a few yards of dark fabric, a staple gun and about 30 minutes can do for ambient/reflected light control. ;)
I used to think having a basement "cave" just meant blocking out natural light...
What I didn't take into account was reflected light from my screen bouncing off the white insulation
Before...way too much light bouncing around

Now That's a "Cave"!
http://members.shaw.ca/piomaniac2/51505.jpg (http://members.shaw.ca/piomaniac2/515005.jpg)
I decided to continue the Black Velvet from the back wall around to break up the large brown side wall..What a difference that simple change made!
The black top section really makes the room feel larger.

I'm pretty happy with the results so far,
The basement feels very cozy for an unfinished area...I guess you really can polish a turd when that's all you can afford to do.
I'm amazed with the video and audio performance. The insulation and fabric combo absorbs light and sound reflections better than drywall/paint.
If there's one area that my room is lacking, without DD/GG there's very little sound isolation from the rest of the home. If there's a movie on, the whole house hears it.
...not too much of a issue though since it's just my G/F and I, no kids (except One Big one -->me)
hanesian 02-15-09, 10:53 PM Hey PioManiac! Quick follow up question for you on your screen. Are you still happy with it now that you've had it for a while? Any wrinkles/waves? How well does the motor work? And where did you buy it from?
PioManiac 02-17-09, 05:32 PM I'm very satisfied with my cheap ebay screen, still no major wrinkles or waves after five months.
The small creases in the bottom third of the screen are just barley visible, but only with a very bright full white projected image. So faint my camera cant even pick them up.
The motor and switch have been perfect, very smooth, very quiet and never a problem.
Just last week I finally figured out how to set the adjustable drop distance so
I can just hit the down button and let it drop to my designated distance (just short of touching my center channel speaker)
without having to watch it closely and hit the stop button when it looked "close enough".
If I had to it all over again, I'm not sure I wouldn't change a thing. A powered drop down screen has allowed me to have the best of both (Plasma/PJ) without having to choose.
Having a TV for a tv program or a quick view of the local news or weather channel beats the heck out of firing up the PJ several times throughout the day.
When its actually "Movie Time",
dropping the BIG screen down in front of the plasma and dimming the lights with a click of my remote when we have company over never fails to get everyone excited with anticipation.
In all honesty I thought I would eventually be looking for a more expensive brand name screen, or building my own fixed screen/masking system once I determined my actual needs.
This one was just supposed to be a cheap temporary first screen to get my feet wet in the FP pool without diving too far into the deep end only to discover I needed a higher gain, higher contrast material, tensioned, or a larger size etc.
I find my image is more than bright enough even now that my bulb has over 400 hours on it, so no need for a higher gain.
I also find my blacks look amazing and that I dont need to worry about a higher contrast screen or a masking system for widescope 2.35:1 movie's.
The black bars on scope movies just seem to blend into the dark background of my room.
I have seen more expensive screens, and more expensive projectors in person, in action,
and I dont feel like they offer anywhere near enough over my setup to justify the additional cost.
Info on where I got it and how much I paid are a few posts back (#39 I believe)
These screen shots came out a little too dark, but it looks amazing in person with no loss in shadow detail at all.
After calibrating my PJ to use low lamp mode the blacks are even better than ever now.
...unfortunately my camera isnt good enough to capture the image without losing some shadow detail.
I should probably just use a brighter setting on the Epson for screen shots I suppose

SpeedNut 02-20-09, 12:57 PM Pio,
Isn't it amazing what happens when the whole room has dark "walls" vs. just the front!
Your project basically put me over the edge in thinking a project like this was feasable, so thanks! :)
PioManiac 02-23-09, 01:09 PM It really is amazing how much better a projector will perform in a totally Blacked out Cave...not just an ambient light controlled space.
...and thanks to stereomandan for his Epson Calibration settings (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=16081100#post16081100), I'm now using Natural mode, with the low lamp setting.
Ceiling treatment is next on my list, maybe some more black velvet or a fiber optic star field, but I need to insulate first.
With my wallet feeling the pinch along with the economic downturn lately I guess my build thread is going to be more of a screen shot collection for a while :o

hummer1823 03-25-09, 09:51 AM Very sweet HT PioManiac. :D
Keep us updated!
PioManiac nice work man, I can't wait for your next pic and update. keep it up
b_scott 04-14-09, 12:44 PM had to top this because I love it. We have that bookcase in the back of the room, haha.
the only thing I'd do differently is put the screen on the actual wall instead of a pull-down. I'll just put my Pio 5010 in another room and have that be the dedicated theater room.
Hey Piomaniac.
I came across a post of yours and thought I'd make a few comments after your suggestions late last year about going FP coming from a Kuro. After much debate (and ditching the FP idea) I eventually came back to it and bought a Pioneer FPJ1 when they clearanced them out in March and picked up a 100" motorized Elite screen. My 6020 has a better picture but I'm VERY happy I made the switch to the projector setup for movies.
Your fabric on your walls added a nice touch.
Another trick (if you hadn't thought of already) I used when it came to the black bars dilema is to only drop your screen down part way. I set my screen down just enough an leave about a 3" border at the top and use the manual vertical shift on my projector and I no longer pay attention to black bars anymore which really helps keeping you from being concerned about black levels. LOL
If you ever want a brighter pic your setup looks perfect for a Da-Lite High Power screen. I got a 12x12 sample and it's plasma bright. There are drawbacks but from your setup there would be no viewing angle issues. That screen is definitely going to be my next upgrade.
Anyway thought I'd pop in and make a comment and thanks for your past suggestions. My projector setup was cheaper than my Kuro 6020 as well. ;)
PioManiac 05-25-09, 10:12 AM Thanks for the update xb1032
I'm glad you finally figured it out. ;)
It's hard to put into words when trying to convince a die hard Kuro plasma fan that a projector is the way to go for a better movie experience.
But even the best TV you can buy is still just a TV. Having a Kuro PDP and a Kuro PJ is the Ultimate combo (IMHO)
I would have loved to get in on that deal when they were clearing them out.
I'm still pretty happy with my screen so I dont think I'll need a high power unless I see a very significant drop in my bulbs output (currently at around 600 hours).
As you can see in my latest "a Bug's Life" screen shots I get plenty of "Pop" even in low lamp mode  The Epson is a pretty bright PJ.

jwakaruk 05-25-09, 07:22 PM Hey PioManiac,
Very nice job, love the set up. Where in Alberta are you? Judging from the house pic I would guess SW Edmonton but might be way off.
Now that you've lived with the theatre seats for awhile would you still give them full recommendations. I was at Finesse on the weekend and with the going out of business sale they had a few chairs at a good discount. They are tempting me to pick them up. :)
PioManiac 05-26-09, 11:18 AM Yup, SW E-Town ...you must live pretty close to know that. :)
I've done a lot of the Designs/Plans for a pretty good chunk of the homes in the SW area, maybe I even did yours?
Tell me, does this basement plan (http://members.shaw.ca/piomaniac2/Bdev1.jpg) look familiar?
I saw your pic here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=74951&d=1170894789) and instantly recognized the model. :D
(dropped triangle section in your basement ceiling for the stairs, and the front door are a dead give away)
I had to force myself to stay away from Finesse because I knew I'd buy another bank of three if I saw them on sale.
For sure one of the best purchases I've made recently (second only to my PJ), and still recommend them.
I would have had to turn my room 90º ccw to work in a second row (easy enough since nothings permanent yet ;) )
...but it would likely be too tight for three wide across the back including a riser so I'd have to put a single seat in storage
(already checked mine out and they can be setup as a pair)
http://members.shaw.ca/piomaniac/South1.jpg
I better just leave it as is, (until I get a bigger home)
that 10' wide 3 seater is huge (much bigger than the sketchup model) and it needs a lot of space.
jwakaruk 05-26-09, 10:03 PM Hey Piomaniac,
That's the floor plan, good call. I'm in MacEwan West so likely pretty close.
I've moved all my equipment into the furnace room now so it's just the projector hole on the back wall. My builder was really good and let me go in one weekend in between framing and drywall to do all my wiring. I also framed in the IB Subwoofer which opens to the back closet of the spare room.
I think I may have to go take a really good look at those chairs again :D
Yea, better keep that floor plan like it is or you'll become like me always trying to improve on somethings that's already really nice.
Hard to be content wanting to always make a change. :)
PioManiac 05-27-09, 12:42 PM holy crap. i heard bug's life was good, but wow. i need to pick it up.

silvershark 06-03-09, 06:02 PM Is your screen wall covered in green fabric? I love the way those lamp fixtures look against the screen wall. Thanks!

Do you happen to know the product number for the area rugs you got at Ikea? What are their dimensions?
PioManiac 06-10-09, 05:48 PM Sorry for the confusion, the area rugs were actually from a store called Home Outfitters, just a block away from the local IKEA here.
They were discontinued and marked down 70% to clear them out. "Black Velvet Stripes", from the Steven&Chris collection.
I have two 5x8's side-by-side, actually measure about 5'-6" x 8'-6" ea, and a 4'x6' behind my seats

b_scott 06-10-09, 05:56 PM RE: A Bug's Life - color seems to pop a bit more on the Kuro, but that could just be settings that you need to tweak - could also be the camera. Both look great though :)
bhuttman 07-13-09, 11:27 AM Hey,
Obviously I am not the first to comment that it's a sweet set-up.
Quick question - are you using the presence speakers feature on the 3900? If you are, do you find that it makes a difference? I am about a month away from moving into a new (22 years young) house, and have already mapped out my home theatre, but am contemplating installing presence speakers. Denon's new 4310 also offers PLIIz, but I read somewhere on the board that Yamaha's presence speakers does a better job of defining a larger sound stage...

bhuttman 07-17-09, 08:22 AM Thanks for the info on using presence - that helps. So you can hook up a true 7.1 system as well as the presence speakers and set up the receiver to use either the rear surrounds or the front presence... interesting.
And I'll try to hold back on the "Lick my Love Pump" and "Stonehenge" references.
bhuttman 07-17-09, 08:30 AM One more question, and maybe this belongs in the official "3900" thread.
Here's the scenario: I have an Xbox, PS3, Satellite, etc. hooked up to the receiver, with main output to a projector and 7.1 setup, and run a HDMI cable from HDMI out 2 to a second room with a LCD TV just behind the main theater (call it the kid's play-room).
Can I send different audio and video through the HDMI to the TV and the projector/main theater? For example, if I want to watch a movie or sat tv in the theater but my son wants to play Xbox in the next room... Can you have the Xbox do a passthrough to the second HDMI connection at the same time you are using the main theater? I guess I could accomplish the same thing using an HDMI splitter.
Nice set up. A basement without ambient lights is great to have such set up.
hanesian 07-22-09, 03:28 PM Nice set up. A basement without ambient lights is great to have such set up.
And it wouldn't be half bad even in a basement with ambient light!
neverfaithful 08-11-09, 01:58 AM Pio, your pics are amazing. I do not know why anyone would need a different or more advanced pj, that projector is fantastic and its like a 2008 model. After I get my Vette painted I am going to get that projector or the next model up. Epson displays a great picture.
Balbolito 10-12-09, 10:06 PM SICK HT :) enjoy it man ;)
darklord700 11-08-09, 01:10 AM Awesome setup man. I only have 1/2 of what you got, a Kuro 50". Where did you get your screen and projector here in Alberta? Are there good demo stores you can see some of the projectors in action? Thanks, buddy.
PioManiac 11-09-09, 05:29 PM I bought my Epson without ever seeing one in action in person,
got it online at http://www.hd.ca/. (based in Ontario)
after reading a ton of posts here at AVS, and reviews like Art's at http://www.projectorreviews.com/
The screen I found for $250 (delivered) on ebay here: http://stores.ebay.com/nationalassetinc (also shipped from Ontario)
It was only supposed to be a cheap temporary unit until I figured out what I really wanted...and turned out to be a keeper.
If you're in Edmonton looking to Demo several PJ's in controlled rooms
I recommend checking out http://www.audio51.net/
He has 4 different dedicated rooms setup, and changes the PJ's around quite often.
I haven't been there in over a year,
cuz I know he'll talk me into a new JVC if I ever return. :D
darklord700 11-10-09, 12:10 AM The screen I found for $250 (delivered) on ebay here: http://stores.ebay.com/nationalassetinc (also shipped from Ontario) It was only supposed to be a cheap temporary unit until I figured out what I really wanted...and turned out to be a keeper.
Your screen is only $250 with electric motor? Can't go wrong with that, I'm sold. Hopefully, I can get my BIG screen setup before Xmas. Thanks, man.
darklord700 11-12-09, 11:45 AM Hi Pio,
Have to ask you more questions since my setup wil be almost identical to yours. How far away is you Kuro from the wall and how far is your screen to the wall?
I looked up the Sanus Plasma wall mount from FS and they are asking $450 for the wall mount. Is that how much you paid?
Thanks for your great post, I was sitting on the fence but I'm now truly motivated to go with the pj transformation.
PioManiac 11-12-09, 12:56 PM The Kuro sits almost flat to the wall most of the time
(about 5" or 6" from wall surface to the front face of TV)
the Sanus can extend the TV so the face is nearly 2 feet from the wall.
...in addition to tilt and swivel
http://members.shaw.ca/BJOTF/sanus2.jpghttp://members.shaw.ca/BJOTF/sanus1.jpg
My screen drops down in front of the plasma (only when its pushed flat to the wall),
and just clears the face of it by about an inch or two.
my best guess is about 7"-8" from wall to screen surface.
I think I paid $330 at BestBuy for my VMAA18B (on sale). $450 is WAY too high.
See if FS will price match to TigerDirect.ca
Link:http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item_upsell.asp?EdpNo=3714923
(...price is $329 once you add it to your cart)
same model in the U.S. (at Tiger Direct.com) is only $249 right now
also check what Costco has to offer.
I think they carry Peerless and Mustang mounts for well under $300.
Monoprice has some good options as well if you don't mind cross-border shopping.
http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10828
But if you really want to save money, skip the articulating feature,
once you get a PJ you'll likely never move the plasma again ;)
bhuttman 11-12-09, 03:46 PM The screen I found for $250 (delivered) on ebay here: http://stores.ebay.com/nationalassetinc (also shipped from Ontario)

I was originally budgeting $300 to do a fixed DIY screen... Does it sit nice and flat?
PioManiac 11-12-09, 06:12 PM It's still very flat, even after a year the edges have not curled and
the few small creases I first noticed (likely from sitting rolled up too long) have all but vanished now.
most recent pic:
http://members.shaw.ca/piomaniac2/6220015.jpg
I'll see if I can get the original full sized shot, uncompressed, and throw up a link to it tomorrow.
There's a very slight wave that's just barely noticeable with the PJ turned off,
with an overhead light turned on...otherwise it's not an issue while playing movies.
You cant expect perfect for $250 (shipped to your door) though,
So I 'm not saying its the best solution for everyone and unless you need a drop down screen, a fixed screen would likely be better in the long run.
I would have gone with a Wilson Art DW Laminate if I didn't have my TV on that wall. I even had access to a free 5'x12' from our cabinet guy.
darklord700 11-12-09, 08:38 PM How did you find the screen installation? Is there any offset or any room to negotiate to install the top bar giving that ceiling joists in different houses are of different distance apart?
PioManiac 11-13-09, 10:03 AM There is a bracket on each end with a single hole to hang from a hook, or to mount flat to a wall.
I hooked one of these on each end, clipped to a small eye hook screwed into 2"x4" blocking that spans between the joists.
http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:Ipq1StQZ4lOgmM:http://www.made-in-china.com/image/2f0j00WBZTKaVMYErcM/Climbing-Hook-KW45-.jpg
I'd be surprised if the entire assembly weighed more than 25 lbs,
so a couple good drywall anchors would be fine if you cant hit a truss/joist.
This pic shows some banding due to being reduced/compressed,
but if you click on it, it will open a full size uncompressed original high res photo
http://members.shaw.ca/piomaniac2/6220016.jpg (http://members.shaw.ca/piomaniac2/6220016L.jpg).

darklord700 11-13-09, 10:25 AM Thanks, Pio.
that is totally ridiculous how good that pj looks.....i am actually in awe with your pj. i have been asking like crazy all over about a comparison of your pj and the 8500UB and the panny 4000U. your 1080UB seems like the perfect pj for me.your pics are amazing.
is your pj calibrated?
bump909 11-23-09, 08:07 PM I think I paid $330 at BestBuy for my VMAA18B (on sale). $450 is WAY too high.
I just purchased this mount (Amazon) as well and I can tell you that the price you paid is way too high too. :(
andrewwhite31 11-24-09, 05:58 AM Assassins Creed on my new home cinema is awesome
I have to agree with Kimwyn. It's insane ( ) how good your pj screen shots look on a monitor that's not even calibrated.
I'm still enjoying your setup man :)
optoguy 12-18-09, 05:22 PM Great looking theater! I do have to admit it was a little scary looking at the pics of your house - a friend of mine has the exact same house/ floor plan in Ellerslie Crossing. I lived with him for a few years while my house was being built. Your pics brought back a lot of memories!
Again, looking great so far.
Darren A.
elmalloc 12-18-09, 05:41 PM your house is pretty cool i guess
queendvd2 12-18-09, 08:05 PM Wow ! Those are some of the most amazing draw dropping screen shots yet!
Well, Its been said already but your screenshots are unreal. I just ordered a panny 4000u and I can only pray that my clarity will even come close to that of yours.. Very nice setup and home!!
taoggniklat 12-20-09, 10:16 PM Those screen images are beautiful.
neverfaithful 12-23-09, 11:56 AM Omg yo, you do not need no 8500UB, your projector looks just as good if not better. you should post them in the 8500UB thread just for fun. lol..
I decided on a 106" Cinewhite screen form Elite. Also, I decided on the Panny AE4000. there are way to many issues with the 8500UB. Maybe I should get a used or new leftover 1080UB.
neverfaithful 12-23-09, 12:00 PM your house is pretty cool i guess
Lmao @ I guess, what does that suppose to mean.
hanesian 12-23-09, 12:12 PM Also, I decided on the Panny AE4000. there are way to many issues with the 8500UB. Maybe I should get a used or new leftover 1080UB.
You're very decisive, aren't you? ;)

Yes and I hate it.

:)
I thought that was the Kuro until I saw that your are among the screen. MAN that thing is CRISP!!
I'm adding a projector to my setup and it had boiled down to the the Panasonic AE3000U, the AE4000U and the Epson 1080UB. The Epson is nowhere to be found online and the AE4000U is a bit out of my price range at this time, so looks like the AE3000U for me. Nice 1080UB, i'm a bit jealous lol.
local5o 02-02-10, 03:20 PM PioManiac--Looks great. I would love to see some more pics of the house too. Looking to build a new home in a couple years and that looks exactly like what mama wants.
stitch1 02-15-10, 02:14 AM I have to say this is one of my favorites on this site. Keep up the good work.
I'm looking to buy a 1080UB can anybody point me to where I can get a good deal?
gitSehT 02-16-10, 10:19 AM Great looking screen shots, I think I will be buying one of those screens for my Marantz PJ and hopefully get similar results.
Anyone else want a screen? Maybe we can get a group buy?
EDIT: I completely forgot to ask, where is the plug located for the screen, I want to run a outlet to the correct location.
Family Time 02-17-10, 07:01 PM [QUOTE=PioManiac;14917454]Installed my 50" Plasma on the wall with a Sanus full motion articulating mount (VMAA18B)
I am looking at the VMAA26 Sanus mount. However, the area where I need to mount the TV is higher than my optimal viewing height location of the TV.
I would like to flip the arched arm. But then NOT flip the TV mount brackets. It looks totally possible, but I've not seen one in person or assembled one. Are you able to look at your mount and let me know if you think that the arched arm could be installed upside down - thereby lowering the completed height of the television?
Thanks!

One of the best pics I have ever seen on avsforum. SO much depth to this image. I'm ordering a 1080UB tomorrow can't wait for it to get here.
DavidK442 04-11-10, 08:47 PM I read the saga of your home theater install front to back. Just wanted to join the long list of appreciative, financially limited, audio-video nuts by saying great job...on the theatre and on your detailed posts. I was flip-flopping between plasma and projection, but after seeing your room set-up and screen shots I'm taking the plunge. Even the wife was convinced. She will just have to learn to knit in the inky black ;-). My room size is similar to yours but the viewing wall will only allow a 92" diagonal. A new acoustically tranparent fixed frame screen is patiently waiting in it's box for me to paint everything black and build a wall unit for mounting. Thanks again, and I look forward to any updates you may have.
Pologuy 08-24-10, 04:18 PM You got those pictures from a Epson 1080UB and a powered drop down 120" screen that you got on ebay for $250?
PioManiac 09-08-10, 05:53 PM Guess I should pop in and check on my own build thread occasionally ? :o
I suppose the "build" that wasn't really a build, kind of slipped into obscurity for a while. :D
The room, and the equipment have remained unchanged for a LONG time now as my attention turned to outdoor chores (landscaping),
recreational activities and generally wasting money on much bigger more expensive toys like motorcycles and trucks.
...and Yes my nearly 2 y/o Epson 1080UB is still going strong on the original lamp it shipped with.
I still have the freebie spare lamp waiting patiently to replace it when the time comes.
Just last weekend we watched my Avatar Bluray (again) to Demo my HT for a Bud that's never seen the movie,
or what a Home Theater can do for an unused corner of his basement (He's a TV guy).
If I get a chance I'll throw up some new screen shots with my crappy point and clicky digi cam over the weekend.
If you don't here back from me, I can be found shoot'n the poop in Kipp's Cocktail Lounge occasionally : http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=153368
<edit note> I Just noticed the date, exactly 4 year's ago I bought my very First HDTV , a Pioneer PDP5070HD Plasma
and I signed up here just a few days later to read up on what the best settings were.
It's still going strong too, and serves as our Master Bedroom TV...get's used at least 4-5 hours a day.
DavidK442 09-08-10, 08:20 PM Since reading your original thread months ago I have built my own theater. Thanks again for the initial motivation. Was hoping that your room was quietly evolving but passions and priorities do change in life don't they. 4-5 hours in the bedroom watching tv? There's better places to watch tv...and better activities for the bedroom. :) Do you use the theater much any more? Still happy with the setup; sound and image size? If you get a chance I would love to see some more screen shots.
Thanks.

I have to tell you, you are the sole reason I am interested in projectors now...
Well, you and the pics you took...
Did you run those pics through Photoshop or any photo editing software before posting them? Or did you just take them and post them?
Because, quite frankly, I am having a very hard time finding a projector that looks half as good as those pics you posted...

The reason the Bedroom TV gets so much use is the G/F.
She won't even go into the basement when I'm not around, too dark, and too scary
...not because of the boogie man so much, just too many overwhelming electronic's for a techno-phobic gal too afraid to touch anything. :D
She only works about 10-12 hours a week, so she's always watching crap like Oprah and Dr.Phil etc...all afternoon...when she runs out of money for shopping...
We dont have a TV on the main floor ( "her" Living Room was zoned an electronics and A/V free zone that leaves the Master Bedroom plasma.
I usually work 6am to 5pm, hit the gym until 7, supper at 8 and my day is done by about 9 (if I dont have to cut the grass)....sleep'n by 10.
I Do use the Theater every weekend still, Movies and Sports...and all Sunday morning Gaming on the PS3 while I'm down doing laundry.
The basement HT has really been a sanctuary for me on the hottest Summer days...always a cool mid 60's temperature...Even when its high 80's outside.

I only use photoshop to crop and resize, no touch up enhancements like colors, brightness, contrast or sharpening.
then I always down res the pic's to get the file size down to save bandwidth.
If I had unlimited webspace I'd always post full size images with all the EXIF Data from my camera intact.
I use a Fuji S5800 camera, 8MP I think...worth about $150
No tripod, just set it on my rear bookcase and set the 10 second timer so I dont bump the frame out of focus with a manual shutter button press.
Choosing the right scene is key, and pausing it with my remote, then frame advance forward and back to make sure the entire frame is in focus
Then there's selecting just the right camera settings for that particular scene. ;)
Tell you what, Pick one or two of your favorite screen shots,
and I'll see if I can dig up the original full size photo straight from the camera complete with the EXIF data intact.
Then I'll see if I can upload it to Webshots or Photobucket ;)

SeveredDime 09-27-10, 03:44 PM That's going to be a sweet S10! what engine are you going to drop in there?

That's much better! :D
No fancy motor for me, sticking with the stock 4.3. it has enough get up and go for my needs.
PioManiac 10-19-10, 11:20 AM Well now that my outdoor Summer fun toys are going into hibernation,
Last run at the track before retiring my drag slicks until Spring (pun intended) :o

Now it's Movie Time again!
and it's My PJ's 2nd Birthday This Week!!!
...still on the original bulb, must be about 1500 hours
and the spare lamp is still waiting on the shelf for it's time to shine.
Love my Epson 1080UB <3 !!! Not a single issue right from Day 1
Although that new JVC HD250 is very tempting, I cant justify needing one ....yet!
Here's a few shots from "How To Train Your Dragon" bluray
Sorry it's been so long since I've used my camera indoors, I cant remember what settings work best for me. :p
White balance is way off and I lost a little shadow detail in some scenes. :)

I also watched Iron Man 2 and Robin Hood ...but was enjoying them too much
to be bothered to pause and snap any screen shots, Robin Hood looked Amazing! so I'll have to reload that one for a few screenies.
Maybe by then I have my camera (Fuji S5800) adjusted properly for screen shots again.
nvmeplz 10-19-10, 06:12 PM Pretty sweet setup. I am going projector for sure after viewing this thread.
For the price it seems as though its the best overall value.
Keep us updated on your progress. :)
PioManiac 10-17-11, 11:43 AM Well almost a year since I updated this thread, and my PJ's 3rd Birthday is this Friday! Wow that went fast!!!
I finally installed my Freebie Spare Lamp in June/2011, after almost 3000 hours...and that's all that's changed in 3 years, until now.
Summer Drag Race season is over once again, and with Winter just around the corner it's time to prepare for Winter Hibernation in the Man-Cave once again.
My 13 second Ram has traded her Drag Radials for Winter shoes and I had to haul my slicks inside because they cant be cold stored.

The room itself is still the same but I added a couple new toys,
Lowes had Bogo deal on a Danby mini-bar fridge and micro wave combo for handy mix/drinks, ice and snacks.
The front face of the fridge is matt black ...and refreshments are almost within an arms reach now
instead of having to hit pause and run up stairs to the kitchen every 15 minutes.

But better yet, I also found a clearance priced 15" Velodyne sub for almost half price on the weekend,
The DLS-5000R has been discontinued so I couldn't pass up an additional 1000 watts of Ground-Pounding LFE
It started in the left rear corner and I could tell instantly the left biased lows were throwing my room off.
I guess there's no need to corner load the Big 15" Beast so the best way to balance the room was moving it right behind my center chair.
Wow!!! I love it! not only does it shake the whole house, it also gives all three seats a built in butt kicker!

after a quick calibration, and turning the new 15" ground-pounder down several times to level 40,
about the same as my pair of Velo DPS-12's front subs...It was time to drop the big screen down to demo the latest Transformers Bluray.

I didn't get many of the high action fight scenes because my Jaw was on the Floor the entire time and couldn't be bothered to stop and shoot pic's
I also re-watched Iron Man and War of the Worlds (again)
O-M-G that's some serious LFE Pounding my house took for a normally quiet Sunday afternoon!
Almost 2000 watts of Sub Bass in a 2000 cubic foot room = LFE Bliss!!! even at modest volume (level -20 on my AVR) I can easily hit 110 db

capricorn kid 11-09-11, 02:01 PM Wow...I just looked thru your entire thread for the first time. Thanks for that journey !!! I have an old Velodyne DPS 12 that I have had for about 8 or 9 yrs. It is one of the best 12" subs I have ever heard in my theater. I know the 15" Velo monster you got helps alot but how was the dual DPS 12s handling in your room alone? I would have loved to get a second DPS 12 but could not find one for sale..not even a used one. I got a dual Klipsch sub set up in the front and my DPS 12 in the rear. You set up is fantastic dude...
capricorn kid 11-09-11, 02:03 PM By the way, when I watched the Transformers : Dark of the Moon a few weeks ago, my jaw was on the floor also. It was the best sounding movie I have heard in my theater.....PERIOD !!!!
PioManiac 11-09-11, 03:02 PM I guess it depends on the size of your rooom, and whether or not its opened up to other spaces.
I recently watched Battle: Los Angeles and got continually bombarded with Deep lows that shook me to the bone through the entire flick!
Totally blew away Transformers DOTM (IMHO)

:D:D:D
...out of curiosity,
I replayed the first 30 minutes over again with the Big 15" muted
and there were noticeable missing elements and not nearly enough tactile bass with just the dual DPS-12's.
I thought having dual 12's was about as good as it gets, but the new 15" is the Bomb!
Maybe I just needed that extra boost because my room is not a 100% enclosed space.
My actual entire basement area is closer to 5000 cubic feet, so a near field sub really made a difference.
The DPS-12's are only rated at 200 watts rms (400 peak) with Class B amps, same goes for the DLS series 10",12" from Velodyne
and although they can reach down to 20Hz easily enough, it still was not enough to properly pressurize my space...even with duals.
According to Curt from Velodyne,
the DLS-5000R 15" has the same Class D amp as the higher end SPL series Velodyne subs,
(rated at 1000 watts RMS, 2000 Watts peak.) ...but at a fraction of the price.
capricorn kid 11-09-11, 03:42 PM My room is a closed space at 2800 cubic ft. That's why I'm not sure getting a 15" sub in my room would make a large impact. Again I have 2 Klipsch RW 12d subs in the front and a Velodyne DPS 12 in the back. I think the bass is really strong and tacticle but I still think I can get more of a deep chest rumble (that IMAX feel) if I get a 15" sub for the back.
