beekermartin 09-25-09, 05:40 PM I scanned a few threads and searched but can't seem to find if there is an advanced menu/setup screen so we can change our own convergence. Is there a way or is there no 'factory menu' like Sanyo?
The convergence is not adjustable.
Thresher 09-27-09, 02:01 AM Thanks Beekermartin
buddahead 09-27-09, 07:10 AM Well after 1st movie night I have to say the 6100 is really good.Even my wife was totaly impress and all the grandkids could tell it was a different fp than the ax00.Sharpenss alone makes the pic so much better.Never knew how much smoothscreen hurt the pic.My wife never could gould see much difference between the ax200 and when we got the ae2000.So I was very happy that she really was impress with the epson,Nighttime scenes were so much better.Does anyone use the iris'if you do is it best in normal or highspeed. Thanks
tommyv2 09-28-09, 07:40 AM I personally don't use the iris.
-I hate the noise. (I've had four 6100s now, they're all the same, noise-wise)
-It's far too slow. Switching from a dark scene to a bright scene, you can see it open up and watch the picture brighten too slowly. It's distracting. It's too gimmicky for my taste. Anything "dynamic" get turned off by me on any device.
I think the blacks are fine. I'm using Behr Silverscreen paint, which is a light grey. I would probably find the blacks on a white screen unacceptable, myself.
All,
I just purchased a 6100. I have not bought the screen yet. My room is black - black walls, black ceiling, absolutely no ambient light.
So my question is this: What screen would be best? A white screen, or a gray screen? I would like to produce the best blacks possible, so am leaning towards getting a gray screen.
Thanks!

How long of a throw, what size screen, and what are you going to mainly watch?
A grey screen may help increase black level a bit but it also lowers brightness. If you have a long throw on a large screen you are probably better off with a white screen. Also, if you are going to be watching a lot of HD sports then again I would recommend white.
10.5' throw. Looking at a 96" diagonal screen. About 70% movie watching, 30% TV (including sports).
tommyv2 09-28-09, 01:33 PM Grey screens definitely help with the blacks, and sort of increase colour saturation, too, by boosting contrast.
If you can get some samples, it would be worth your time.
buddahead 09-28-09, 04:05 PM Gray paint does not help with blacks.Old wives tale.I found my iris not noisy at all.It helps with blacks. All fp use this trick mostly.Get a good quality white screen.I use a Carada bw screen and the blacks are fine.Plus I get that pop and the colors are great.Tommyv2 behr paint is not a screen just cheap paint.Get a real screen and see what your 6100 can do.
KurlonT 09-28-09, 05:59 PM I'm currently using the Elite Screens Silver Frame (CineGray@92") and the 6100.
Viewing distance of 11' w/ 7' ceiling in a 14x13 finished attic.
Old viewing setup:
Epson 400, White (BOC) Screen, Off white ceiling paint and dark brown walls.
New viewing setup:
Epson 6100, Gray Screen, Light brown ceiling paint and dark brown walls.
HDTV and PS3 gaming w/ ambient light:
In Living Room mode I can have the floor lamp on (located in the back of the room about 12ft from screen) and the picture is still great w/ HDTV or PS3 gaming. In Dynamic mode I can actually have the ceiling light on (located about 5ft from the screen) and still have a acceptable picture for HDTV viewing but that's worst case.
With the old viewing the brightest mode was still washed somewhat w/ the floor lamp and was totally unwatchable w/ the main light. I'm sure the brighter projector and darker ceiling helped but I wanted to take the extra step w/ the gray screen.
Movie viewing w/ no ambient light:
In Theater Dark 1 mode the blacks are pretty deep now but I don't have the white screen up to compare plus the new projector is a bigger improvement in contrast and brightness over the old one. So I can't say about improving black levels w/o throwing up white screen material.
My overall goal was to deal w/ ambient light first so going w/ a brighter projector, gray screen and darker ceiling color IMO all helped in the end.
tommyv2 09-28-09, 10:11 PM I'm not convinced about 'screens'. I've been around many screens in my life, and my 'cheap Behr paint' looks as good. There is literally no weakness there that isn't a weakness showing from the projector itself. Even if it's a little better with a real screen, it's $35 versus hundreds. I'd rather buy another bulb and use the thing for another year or two longer. The 6100 is hardly an expensive projector, I couldn't imagine spending hundreds more on a screen, when that money could've been spent on a better projector in the first place. I'm sure a JVC on a white plain wall will smoke the 6100 on the greatest screen you've ever seen, right? The Epson 6500 as well, for that matter.
Should I buy the 6100 now or wait for the release of 8100? Does anyone know the official release date for 8100?

Supposed to be late October. I would at least wait until thursday to see what the epson october rebate offers are. Because right now the 6100 is 1599 with no rebates, while the 8100 will be 1599 with a 100 dollar rebate. They have had rebates often for the 6100 in the past, so you would think they would again soon to give some incentive to keep buying it over the new model.

In my case by the time I added the costs of DIY screen materials, Wagner Sprayer (tried to roll once before w/o success) and then gray paint (Black Widow formula) my savings wasn't all that lower than getting the Elite Screen. Either way I'm really enjoying the 6100 and gray screen combo.
larrimore 09-30-09, 08:25 AM I decided to calibrate and play with the 6100 last night. I think I nailed down what made me a little hesitant about keeping it: It is the sheer brightness.
We see a lot of movies at a very good digital-equipped theater (my company offers a great discount ticket program if you buy 20+ tickets at a time) and I am used to the performance of that particular setup. I have been able to get my Panasonic 900 to close to the look (brightness) I am used to in one of its less bright modes, but when I put on the 6100...BAM!
Even in the lowest mode, and after calibration, the 6100 looks more like a giant LCD and less like the theater I am used to. It took me a while to look past the brightness and get into other things like colors, resolution and noise levels- where it definitley excels over my AE900.
I put an old ND2 filter I had left over from my days of owning an InFocus X1 in front of the Epson and that put me where I am used to. So, I figure I can use that if needed until the lamp loses some brightness, which I would expect in 200 hours or so. It is also great to have that brightness if I want it for football so I don't have to keep it so dark while watching.
I had thought about returning the 6100 and getting a 6500UB, but now that is not a thought. Especially since I paid almost exactly half of what a 6500 costs.
John Frank 10-26-09, 09:08 PM My 6100 popped and then no picture. Thought the lamp had blown. Punched the power button on the remote, it revved up again with a normal picture and about 5 minutes later there was another pop with no picture. Anyone have a clue?
tommyv2 11-11-09, 12:25 PM Just an update on my projector...
I finally reached 100 hours on my 4th 6100 (I'm picky). The good news is:
-The defocus issue is totally solved. Within 5 minutes it's razor sharp and stays that way. This was not the case when the projector was new, or even 50 hours in.
-The colour uniformity of the black screen is getting better. It could be because the bulb is starting to dim from age, but now I sometimes don't notice the upper-left corner being ever-so-slightly reddish.

yep, sounds like a bulb burnout to me. Get ready to drop $300 on a bulb. I might be wrong?
hey guys, i just sold my 6100 projector for $1400 with an elite 120" pulldown screen + samus Mount. The projector had 320 hours of usage. Can anyone tell me if this was a reasonable price? should i have settled for more?

The 8100 is $1200 at BB, so yes, you got an excellent price even with the screen and mount IMO.
Trav2003 11-24-09, 02:05 PM I just called Epson support and had them cross-ship me a replacement to my HC6100. I bought it at Best Buy in January and have had the focus issue since day 1 (about half hour to fully focus). From what I've read, it's a pretty common issue that's been solved on newer units, but the support guy made it sound like I was the only one with this issue... any idea whats up with that? Am I imagining the issue, or did they just have no clue?
Secondly, I just moved into a house and am planning on a pull-down screen for my HC6100, but am torn between what to buy. A guy at work swears by the Da-Lite HiPower screens, but that's a bit out of my price range and I do like blacks. I was thinking about a simple MatteWhite Elite screen, but am open to suggestions.
Finally, is it stupid of me to sell the 6100 for an 8100? How much could I get for it on eBay?
Lordhits 11-24-09, 05:14 PM ... but the support guy made it sound like I was the only one with this issue... any idea whats up with that? Am I imagining the issue, or did they just have no clue?
They did that to me too. I'm sure they know it's a common problem. It's not like I had to argue with them, but i did have to explain in detail what was going on and then they had no issue sending me the replacement.

I'm using my 6100 on a painted wall. Used Behr Quietude (can't remember the paint #, but it's one step lighter than SilverScreen). Worked out great. And cheap.

Can't do a painted wall, as I want to project it on a basement wall with windows, thus the need for a pull down.
shankar 11-25-09, 08:13 PM Got my hands on a 6100 last week. I graduated from a NECLT240K. This thing rocks.... I used AVIA & DVE to calibrate using my Momitsu upscaling at 1080i via component. Setting is Theaterblack 1. Used some tweaks from projector review.com Here are some screen shots. It was very hard to freeze the image from my dish receiver...It is a lot easier to do this with a DVD player... I will capture some later..
Projecting from 13.7 feet onto a BO cloth 106" screen painted with black widow.

Couple of issues with my 6100 I figured I'd ask due to lightly searching the thread with no luck, hopefully someone has a quick response:
1. When I switch from PS3 to my digital cable box, the image size from the cable box is smaller thus causing me to have to correct it via the zoom and then when I go back to the PS3 it's to large, can someone explain how I correct this?
2. What is the best way to line up my projected image with the screen, is there a step by step process?
Setup:
Epson 6100, Onkyo 805, PS3, Bell 6131 Cable Box, 120' screen, mounted ceiling at 13'6 feet.
Thanks.

Check if the digital cable box and PS3 are set to the same 16:9 mode... looks like one of them may be set to 4:3
The ideal set up is to have teh center of the lens as close to the center of the screen both vertically and horizontally. However it is impossible with a ceiling mounted setup. So get them as close as possible.
Use these as guidelines
http://www.epson.com/images/landing/calculator/index.html
There is a pattern (see the remote and click pattern) that you can display to position the screen. zoom out fully, Get as close to center as possible if you can reposition the screen or projector, and then use the lens shift knobs to fine tune.
I have a 106" screen and am projecting from 13'6" as well and had to use zoom to get the screen to fill. So with a 120" you will ahve to zoom in more.

Help Needed: Epson 6100: Saving calibration settings
Hello 6100 / 8100 users, Need your help...
My Epson 6100 has ONE HDMI input going in. It is fed by 2 sources my Dish HD receiver & a LG370 blu ray using a HDMI switch.
I "calibrated" the 6100 using the AVSHD 709 in my LG370 using HDMI connection. I watched some bluray DVDs and they looked great.. I saved this setting to Theater Black 1.
I then switched to Dish HD and the colors looked different. So I looked at the settings and th theater black setting for brightness, contrast etc were now different from what I had saved !
Puzzled, i went back to DVD and the saved setting were back !
So, does this projector save different settings for different sources? That does not seem possible... if yes, how do I adjust the picture for the HDTV input?
Can someone help me figure this out?

Fix it through the PS3. Get the zoom right with the cable box. Going into the PS3's set up (same as the first time you powered it up) and it allows you to manually move these arrows to the exact edge of your picture. I'm not exactly sure what menu it is under but look around you will find it.

Congratulations! What a great buy!! You're going to love it. I've had mine for almost a year, not a single problem, just a great image every time...
bri1270 12-21-09, 12:50 PM Hey DD - Where in NH are you? I picked up the 8100 on Friday of last week in Portsmouth. I didn't even think to ask about the 6100, I should have though. Now that I have the 8100 installed, I really don't want to take it down, pack it up and return it...then again, for the savings, it would be worth it.

well i assume its going to be a little better than the hd65, and got it for the same price....
cant wait till tonite, when all set up...thanks
now i have many pages on this thread to read....
ditch-digger 12-21-09, 04:56 PM well just gone done messing with it for a bit..
first things (and i know its an older version/model) but new to me and comming from an hc1500, and hd65 pretty big jump..
much quiter than the previous two i owned..
way brighter....
was not blown away at first, but then ran thru transformers2 and the new terminator (last movies i watched on the hd65) and observed a definite clarity improvement, and overall sharpness..
i could not stand the full bright modes on the previous 2 but LOVED the pop on the living room mode, and the dynamic just freekin wow, i know your supposed set it to theater black 2 or 75 or something, but wow, i might just leave it on and enjoy the freekin thing...(may change my mind at night when my eyeballs burn out:D) but love the pop..
HUGE, made the others look like sandwiches..
and as far as issues the focus/zoom ring stuck at first, but got them to move...
very happy.....if not gotten for the price, may have not been so excited..not sure if it would have been worth a $600-$700 jump:rolleyes:

I wouldn't swap the 8100 for the Sanyo Z700, maybe the Z3000, but BB doesn't carry that model. I called Salem and Portsmouth and neither have the 6100...of course they told me they didn't have the 8100 (in Portsmouth), but when I went in, the Magnolia guys were able to locate one in the warehouse. When I'm out and about again, I'll stop in a check.

trust me, and just go...when you call they could care less to take a few minutes and look..
when i went i literally scanned the top tier shelves and noticed 4 6100's, 2 8100's 2 sanyo's, and one mits 6800..none of wich were online. or in their computers.
i actually asked one guy if they had any sanyo's in and he said no..???? (just looked on the pc):confused::confused::confused:
Just got one of these from BB at a really great price. Would like to know the following:
1. how do I set it to theaterblack 1 image mode, I think I read that this is the best mode for movie watching.
2. what are the known issues with this project? Would like to know what to expect.
Happy to join the club.

straylight2040 12-22-09, 09:58 PM I just picked up one of these at bestbuy on clearance and am very happy with it. I just have one question -- when I power it down with the remote, it goes into cooling mode and the power light starts blinking -- but then it only lasts about 15 seconds (even if it's been running for hours). The projector still seems pretty hot at that point. The only reason I wonder is that the cooldown period for pj's I've had in the past is usually a couple of minutes. Is the short cooldown consistent with everyone else's experience? (or maybe with modern pj's as the last I had was an SP4805).
Thanks, ditchdigger! Now I have a giant box in the middle of my theater and I'm 800 bucks poorer. And now i need to buy an hdmi cable, new mount, and of course grow my screen with all my extra lumens. Ahhh!
Maybe monoprice can do fedex!

I use my PJ every day for all my viewing needs....movies, TV, XBOX 360...everything. I've done this with every PJ I've owned. I haven't owned a TV for 5 years.
The bulb has dimmed a fair bit, to be sure, but not outrageously. I used to run it in Theater Black, but recently I've calibrated it in Living Room mode, and it looks great. It's not as blindingly bright as when I first bought it, but it's still plenty bright. I'm probably going to buy a new bulb and use the old one as a spare.

That works out to roughly 6 hours a day. I tend to use mine about the same, and I just bought the 8100. Have you noticed any shifts in color or any wear of the panels themselves; any degradation other than brightness?

emesnik 12-23-09, 06:48 PM Hey, I have called many stores and found and bought one in LA. For those still looking, they do have an open box version at the Hollywood store with added discount but I wanted one new in the box. Also, there is one in the North Anchorage Alaska store and one in Wawautosa, Wisconsin but I couldn't get a hold of friends in those spots to pick up for me so those are on hold but will be available again shortly for those of you that might be on those areas. I would call back to take off hold but the phone waits are brutal so they will be back for you on their own very soon. Good luck. I hope I like it!
threed123 12-24-09, 12:10 AM Okay, I was going for an Optoma HD20 (1080p), but if I found a HC6100 at BB for a price I could not refuse--would I be happy with it over the HD20 (eg. an LCD over a DLP)? I have an HD70 (720p) now and it's quite nice, but I want more resolution.

ditch-digger 12-24-09, 06:46 AM Okay, I was going for an Optoma HD20 (1080p), but if I found a HC6100 at BB for a price I could not refuse--would I be happy with it over the HD20 (eg. an LCD over a DLP)? I have an HD70 (720p) now and it's quite nice, but I want more resolution.
from personal experience...
hd20 does not come close...
;)
threed123 12-24-09, 01:23 PM Wahhh, I check all around Detroit metro area-none. One store had a display unit (no guts inside). Another had a return, but couldn't find on the shelves. They all said their computers were 24-36 hours off from updates because of the holiday rush.
Oh well, it's back to wishin' for something else (read more expensive).
Greg_63 12-24-09, 07:42 PM I checked the charlotte area and couldn't find one :( I was able to take advantage of the huge sale BB had on the Pioneer Elite SC-25 :) But I would have loved to get one of these to replace my Epson 720. OH well, Epson is sending me a brand new (not refurb) 720 replacement next week so I guess it will have to do for a few more years.
threed123 12-25-09, 10:32 AM Yeah, I know I could call the store and ask, but it's Christmas so I'll call tomorrow, but does anyone know if you can tag a projector at a store out-state and have it sent??
Oh, and Happy Holidays to everyone--especially those watching all their new blu-rays in 1080p today...;o\
emesnik 12-25-09, 12:08 PM BB will not ship to you from the store. Only orders from the website ship. However, if you find one in your "region", you can ask them to OMS it (their wording for store to store transfers) but it needs to be from a store that works off the same BB distribution center as the store you live near. Good luck and happy holidays.
threed123 12-25-09, 01:21 PM emesnik: thanks!!! I'm going to do some calling tomorrow and will let you all know how it works out.
straylight2040 12-27-09, 12:23 PM I just picked up one of these at bestbuy on clearance and am very happy with it.
Similar discussion on this issue in the 8100 thread. May just be par for the course with this line?
threed123 12-27-09, 03:40 PM Did some more searching for Best Buy deals. Didn't find any 6100s, but did discover there are apparently two different Best Buy store layouts. One that carries only presentation projectors, and another that carries home theater projectors. And in the end, no one qualified to sell either...:0(
Hello,
Is this the projector that had a focusing problem when they first came out? Was this problem ever resolved and how do I determine if my projector will have the same issue?
Thanks:confused::confused:

Is this the projector that had a focusing problem when they first came out? Was this problem ever resolved and how do I determine if my projector will have the same issue?
Thanks:confused::confused:
Yes it is ... However that has been resolved according to posts that I read. I bought one a month ago and I do not see any loss of focus...
I just bought one last week and don't know if this is old inventory that may have this issue. Is there anyway to confirm?

You should notice the drift when you're watching it. If it's not going out of focus, you should be good to go.
Checked like 5 best buy stores and nothing... Anyone have one in a local store the know of with 1 in stock? Maybe I can talk hem into shipping it!
Please PM me if you do!
Greg_63 12-28-09, 06:11 PM Had a BB employee check a half dozen states on the east coast. A few showed one in stock but when we called they turned out to be orders for someone that were never filled.
Found one 2 hours from me but it was being held for someone that had already paid for it but hadn't picked it up.
After more then an hour he offered me $300 off of an 8100 with 36 months free financing. I went ahead and took the deal. Excellent projector. I love it. If I can sell my brand new replacement 720 (not a refurb) that I'm getting from Epson then my net cost for the 8100 should be down to $550 - $600.
Find a BB to give you $300 off the 8100 and don't look back :)
miller1080 12-28-09, 09:47 PM I picked up one from a best buy in Maryland on the 26th. One store told me this other store was showing 1 in stock. I called of course they said we don't have any and don't carry that one anymore. So I decided to take the 30 min drive anyway and check myself. I had someone check their "back room" and they found the one that was left. I'm almost positive that was the last one in Maryland. Thanks again to the guy who posted about the clearance sale!
Greg_63 12-28-09, 10:31 PM When I was at BB we called 2 stores in Maryland early Saturday afternoon. One wouldn't answer and the other said that they didn't have it.
I would have loved to get the 6100 and save the money over the 8100 but $300 off of the 8100 was the next best thing. I'd still get the 6100 if I could find one especially since I had to replace my receiver last week.
Anybody get a good resolution to work full screen with a comp? Havn't messed with powerstrip for a long while and none of the W7 resolutions works from corner to corner.
John007 12-29-09, 04:05 PM Just adding myself to the list of Epson HC 6100 owners. Thanks to this forum and ditch-diggers BB find. Was able to pick one up at a local BB that had two units. One new and one open box. I had called the store and the sales rep said they did not have any in stock but decided to stop in anyway. Talked to a rep in the Magnolia center and he was able to find them. Cannot wait to get it up and running.
Thanks

Where are you located? I can't get the people at BB to co-operate and look like some of you guys have been able to do.
The manual requires that the main power switch located on the back of the unit be turned off when not viewing, but how is this possible when the unit is mounted on the ceiling?
Has anyone contacted epson support to find out if this switch can be left on when not in use?

I read this and wondered about it too. I'm pretty sure it means not to leave the projector running (w/ the bulb on) nonstop, vs. just leaving it in 'standby' mode (as it would be particularly inconvenient for ceiling mounted units). But perhaps it would be worth checking with customer support.
straylight2040 12-30-09, 02:10 PM The manual says to turn the unit upside down to clean the dust filter (if it isn't ceiling mounted). Mine is on a table (at least for now) and it would seem easier not to flip the whole thing over since the hatch is still accessible on the back (and I thought it might stir up any dust less). Is there any particular reason it should be upside down when cleaning? Anyone have experience with this, or other tips? Also, about how often should you do this cleaning? Thanks!
My projector has now developed a pink line along the bottom of the picture so it will have to be replaced - too bad since it has worked great until now.

they will next day one to you.....;)
Yeah, that is the one good thing, just not liking the idea of going through another device that might have another issue.
Can anyone tell me what the inital settings are for the following:
Brightness
Tint
contrastcolor saturation
RGB:
offset: red,green,blue
Gain: red, green, blue
I've made adjustments to them but would like to set them back to what they were originally when I first purcahse this.
Thanks

What a coincidence! Mine has recently developed a pink line along the top of the picture. Looks like I'll be phoning Epson as well.

Egads... is it time? Mine has green/red across the top and yellowish across the bottom now. Think it's the organic panels going already?
Is it just a line or a large tinted section? I could still see behind mine, but it was tinted pink and rather large. The replacement looks brand new and is perfect so far - the last one they sent was in pretty bad physical condition, but it worked so I just stuck with it. Epsons service keeps me coming back, but it would be nice to stick with the same projector for more than 6 months =]
Mine is a tinted section on top and bottom. You've already had 2, yikes. Maybe they will upgrade to the 8100 for me
Kilgore 01-10-10, 12:53 AM Mine is a magenta "stripe" about 8-10 pixels wide across the top of the screen. You can see through it, and is mainly visible on white or light colored images. For now, I've just zoomed so it falls on my masking so I don't see it.
Just sent for my replacement today. Tuesday at 1:30 cst. We'll see how long it takes.
For ones who got replacements, how many hours did they have on the unit, were they new or did they reset the hours on a refurbished unit?

do a search, there is a code to enter on the remote to show you how many times it has been ignited.
your either going to get a new one, or a refurb with a new bulb...

The hour counter on mines was set to 0. I can't tell if the unit/bulb was new or refurb. So far i got 350 hours on the replacement and still has the out of focus issue until it warms up (in like 15 minutes). I just been living with it for now.
Always sent with reset hours. I know my first was a refurb, but this one has to be brand new. For the first time out of my past who knows how many epsons I can actually use the iris without even hearing the thing.

i will never buy another brand pj.

Agreed. I will always buy an Epson as long as they keep the same policies in place. I read somewhere that they are considering going to a 5 year warranty.
Got mine back next day.... Problem is, has some kind of light leak at the bottom... when the lens is out of focus it makes a distinct upside down red lighted question mark. When you focus the picture it turns into a small red circle blob at the bottom center of the picture. Guess this one will be going back as well.
On a good news note, I can definitely see how much brighter this one is over the last one. I assume it would be the 1800 hours on the bulb that I had but I don't remember ever enjoying watching a movie on theater black even when the other one was new and now I have to turn it down to that setting or else movies are too bright.
Anyway... sending this one back as well :(
I wonder if you send so many back that they would let you upgrade to the newer version 8100 :)

oh man I dealt with panasonic, it was the worst. I had an AX200U . I got it fixed 3 times and every repair triggered another problem. they wouldn't replace the projector and gave me a hard time. the problem was the screen uniformity. it looked red some places and green other when it is a white screen.
every repair took forever so I demanded a full refund after a year. and bought me an Epson 8100 :)
I saw a second hand Panasonic AX2000 and wondered how it would fare against the Epson. Anybody seen both in action and what do you think?
KurlonT 01-25-10, 07:24 AM Loving this projector so far...so nice being able to leave a few lights on while PS3 gaming and not worrying about the screen being overpowered by ambient light.
One problem though;
I have about 200hrs on the bulb so far and noticed when the scene is black or near black there appears to be several "spots" located towards the bottom of the picture that seem lighter. Might I assume these are dust blobs? I did check the filter and there wasn't a build up of dust. If these are dust blobs does the warranty cover such problems?
Thanks.
xavierh 01-30-10, 05:17 PM Hey Folks:
I've read with great interest a number of posts regarding problems and warranty claims and thought I would post about my own recent transaction with Epson.
Got my projector on New Year's eve. Right out of the box it was great BUT (and perhaps it was buyer's remorse) but the warm fuzzies soon to fade.
The iris was EXTREMELY noisy (as has been posted by others) to the point that I just left it off. It also didn't keep focus (again, as some others have posted).
If these two things weren't enough, my unit began to develop a red band across the bottom (top actually - mine is ceiling mounted) that first showed up as about 20 pixels highg but quickly grew to about 40 px high.
I called Epson and spoke with a VERY friendly person. I explained the situatio and didn't even have a chance to mention the red colour banding before he interrupted and said that the iris and focus issues were enough to warrant a replacement.
That call took place around 6:00pm ET (calling to somewhere in Washington state I believe) so really too late to expect much of a response). As I suspected, they must have placed the order with Epson Canada the following Monday because i received my replacement unit on Tuesday.
As was explained to me - the unit I received was refurbished - NOT NEW. I thought I would be sending them my unit which they would repair and send back to me. Not so... I got someone else's problem unit which was refurbished and someone else will get mine (once repaired). This is mine to keep.
My previous unit had about 820 hours on the bulb - I inquired about whether the replacement would have a new bulb or more/fewer hours. The epson help couldn't answer this but suggested if it was a concern to me then I should swap bulbs.
The replacement must have either been reset OR had a new bulb because there was no mileage recorded in the info menu. I took a chance and kept this one's bulb (picture looked bright enough).
All I had to do was pack my current one up in the box the replacement came with, affix the supplied mailing label and call FedEx for a delivery (from work only - otherwise you have to go to a FedEx depot). That's that. They did require a credit card (the replacement packing slip said $1400) to keep on file in case the original PJ was not returned. Also, the packing slip indicated that I had a week to send the original back.
So far with the new PJ so good. Picture is nice and bright and sharp. No red bar across the bottom. The iris still makes some sound but NOTHING like before (I've read upthread that this is normal). The focus ring seems much more resistent to my touch and so perhaps that is a good thing - havn't spent much time with this unit to see how well it holds focus (just hooked up the replacement 2 days ago).
All this to say, Epson exchange program is EXCELLENT! (I'm writing from Canada but seeing as I spoke with someone from the US I can only imagine that US owners will have an equally good experience).
So far despite the problems with what was obviously attributed to an early design flaw, I have been very happy with my unit and would recommend it to anyone.
I bought my projector in april of last year. Today I noticed the red band at the bottom of my screen (I can swear that I was not there before) on any material uses the whole screen. My projector is ceiling mounted.

I am in Los Angeles. I found 2 of them here. one in west Hollywood where I live and another 150 miles north. I bought them both. you should call and tell them to do a search on SKU number not the model name. I called the national 1-800 number and asked possible places that might have. she said also in Tuscon Arizona one place have it. on the west coast there was only two left and I drove 150 miles and a speeding ticket to get it :) I see no difference in picture quality on a 135 inch screen compare to Epson 8100 I had and sold to buy two of these babies.. how is your experiences guys?? anyone watched 6100 and 8100 side by side to give any assessment.
oh the SKU number when you call sale people at BB

good luck.

Hi Guys,
Ive been trying to decide on a projector and Im wondering if I should get the Optoma HD20, Benq W1000 or go an older model like the epson 6100. Id love the 8100 but cant really afford it. I was wondering what your thoughts are. Is this an old model?? or still quality wise better than HD20 or W1000. Did you question the same thing? Im in Australia and will need to try and find one in US which might be a hard task!

seen the hd20, not in the same league as the 6100. never seen the benq. read some reviews, the difference in pq between the 8100, and 6100 is marginal at best.. awesome pj.
CameronR 02-18-10, 11:47 PM I have also noticed a red band developing across the top of the screen. I have about 400hrs on the projector. It is probably 40px deep now. Hopefully epson Australia are good about it...

Bookout 03-01-10, 07:38 PM Has anybody had to replace their first lamp yet? I've got about 1100 hours on mine and have been loving the brightness. Fired it up last night and it was so dim it was almost unwatchable. Tried it today, and I've got no picture and the "Replace Lamp" light is flashing red. One reason I bought this thing was for the ~4000 hour lamp life. I do run it at the brightest settings, but I can't believe it degraded so fast. Any thoughts, guys?
>Jarek< 03-04-10, 11:52 AM I have a problem with my projector Epson EH-TW3800 (europe name for HC6100 or very similar) after only 35hr run.
During a movie or if just the projector screen is showing a dark image, there is a reddish tinge in the bottom of the left corner - please see photos.
Reading many posts at many forums I can't find answer what it exactly is?
Seems to me it is conected with high temp - when projector statrs up there is no problem then after 1hr the effect is like in the pictures attached.
Is anyone who has similar problem???
Should I replace the unit??
Thanks in advance

I've got the same issue with my TH2900 (6100) - I have now replaced unit and I think even worst - reddish + greenish when screen is 100% black in very dark conditions and light leakage when using lens-shift.
as a replacement I've got older manufacture unit :( (comparing serial no)
and Jarek, I am from Poland too ;)
Lemistral 04-01-10, 07:34 PM I'm seeing the same problem. I see the reddish tinge across the whole bottom of the screen, although it did appear in the right bottom corner first. I can't see it that clearly on a black screen, but it is apparent on a blue screen.
I called Epson and they sent me a replacement. It's ~200 serial number units past my original one (replaced for the warm-up focusing issue) so it will be interesting to see whether it's an improvement or not. So far the reddish tinge is more of an annoyance, but it is concerning that so many users are seeing a similar problem.
Matthes30 04-04-10, 04:20 AM My projector the Epson TW2900 (6100) has excatly the same issue. I can see red shading in the left lower corner. The counter shows it has 20 hours lamptime. It is clearly visible in black pictures and brown colored pictures. This really sucks. When it will more increase i will call the epson service.
CameronR 05-04-10, 12:48 AM As mentioned in another thread I dropped my projector off to a service centre last week for the red tinge problem. I just had a chat with the service centre and they have confirmed the problem (wow, what a surprise!) and have ordered a new "optical engine" from Epson. As far as I can tell (from the epson marketing) the optical engine is the 3 chip LCD.
Looks like it is definitely a problem with the LCD panels! When it is repaired I will try and talk to a techy at the service centre to get more of an idea about the cause. I imagine it will be a week or so before it is fixed (assuming Epson Australia have some spare "optical engines" lying around)..

pglover19 05-15-10, 01:31 PM How do you adjust for overscan on the Epson 6100? I have a Comcast HDTV source that I need to overscan for. My previous projector had this feature...
pbmax542 05-26-10, 07:34 PM My 6100 had a red tint in the upper left hand corner of the screen (ceiling mounted). I called epson and they next day aired a replacement to me. The only problem is, my replacement projector has more issues than my original. I called again and they said they would next day another replacement to me. Two days went by with no replacement. I called today and it turns out the 6100 is on back order.
What good is awesome customer support, when it's accompanied by poor product quality? I just hope they have another replacement available soon. This refurbished unit I have now is just terrible.
pbmax542 08-01-10, 11:58 PM My 3rd 6100 has an issue as well. A small purple line across the bottom right hand side of the screen. It shows up best on a white background, but can be seen at all times. I have tried different cables, different inputs, and different input devices. Does anyone know of a fix for this? I hate to send it in again, just to get another bad projector.

Does anyone know if the TW2900(EU model) has the same problems with the color stripes? It does not seem to be the same as the 6100 because it is rated at 1600 lumens and 16.000:1 contrast. But it seems as if the TW2900 is actually a newer model?
I had actually just settled on this, but then read this thread and now have the impression that the color stripe is a wide-spread problem, so now I dont know...
pbmax542 08-13-10, 08:04 PM My 4th 6100 arrived today. Nothing wrong with the picture so far, but it did just overheat and shut down. I had been watching it for less than 2 hours when it just turned off. It's about 75 degrees in my house and the 6100 was on dynamic, so that may be why it overheated. However, the other three 6100's I've had never overheated. Not even after being on for 8 hours straight. Hopefully it's because it was in dynamic mode. I have never used dynamic in the past and I am pretty sure this is a brand new lamp. Those two factors may have lead to the problem.
pbmax542 08-15-10, 12:15 AM Lowered it to Theater Black 1, lowered the room temp to 70 degrees, turned on my Ghost Writer blu-ray, and it overheated in less than 30 minutes. Looks like I have to get another replacement. I wonder if they would give me my money back, or give me an upgrade. This is just ridiculous.
alwilli 09-04-10, 06:50 PM My lamp blew today with about 2100hrs on it. Not bad but not 3000-4000 either. It started going noticeably dim at about 800hrs. I had to go from natural econo to high, then living room econo to high, then blam!
I have a new lamp ordered but due to the weekend/holiday, I won't get it until Tuesday. Blew just in time for College football kickoff weekend. What luck.

What do people think about this projector?
www.professionalav.com (http://www.professionalav.com)
Hi everybody. I have a simple question.
I'm actually building my home cinema and I have to options.
1. Epson HC810 (european TW700 HDready)
2. Epson HC6100 ( in my country TW2900 - FullHD)
Is it worth to add 600$ to the HD version? Anybody compared those two units? Or maybe similar class units? I'm very curious if this is a good move to pay more and be more content than stuck with 720p TW700. Is the sharpness and resolution much better?
Of course there is a price difference... but my budget is flexible so I can afford TW2900 right now.
Thank you for propositions.
PS. I have tested VIVITEK 1085 yesterday but i saw some serious rainbow while super DLP stress test. While watching regular movies it was not a big issue - but it could be seen.
So I guess cheap DLP is not for me. I would rather stick with LCD technology. I will use my Epson with PC (movies 720p,1080p, games), XBOX 360, PS3.
One more question. What about this weird red glow effect on the corners of the screen? Was it cured by epson?
Thanks for help!

brtnelson 09-25-10, 09:02 PM My projector was flawless for 9 months.I fired up the projector last night and the lumens were probably less than half than the day before.I was using theater mode 2 before.I bumped it up to Dynamic and raised contrast to the max and I still get a very dark picture. If it is a bad bulb would it drop dramatically like this overnight? If not,What is the cause?I will call Customer Service on Monday.I know they will not cover the bulb.It has 1000 hours in 9 months.Hopefully,It is something else and the warranty will cover it.If anybody else has had this expereience,Let Me know how it ended up. Thanks

bwcafishing 10-25-10, 05:08 PM The bulb on my 6100 fried last night, only had 753 hours. Epson is sending a new one tomorrow and I will have on Wednesday. Great customer service.
geeman2001 12-07-10, 05:13 PM Does anyone know if the firmware on the HC6100 can be updated by the consumer?
Wayne Newton 12-10-10, 10:32 PM I can get this 6100 unit from a forum sponsor for the same price as the optoma hd20 or 300 more than the 705hd. The 6100 is better for me in every way, but could some of you actual owners give me a vote of confidence considering I would get the 2 year warranty on the pj and, I assume, the same lamp support you guys are getting. I just don't want to purchase a pj for which I have to replace the lamp out of pocket without getting around 3000 hours out of the lamp if I treat it right.
just bought a refurbed 6100 and i cant decide on a screen material. Because my room is small ~10 throw at best, the largest screen i can comfortably go with is 90" but i will probably go with 80". Ive already done the measurements so this aspect is set. My room has beige walls and white celing, though i can pain the wall the screen will be attached to black. viewing distance will be about 10.5-11 feet. Im not sure what determines ambient light? I only plan on using it for movies, at night. There is a window in my room facing the street. There are no street lights outside so the only light entering the room would come from my neighbors houses across the street. I have blinds which I can close too. Its pretty much pitch black at night with all lights off and blinds closed.
Im debating a matte white or high contrast gray? I have small budget for screen, im looking at either the 85" focupix screens and maybe the 95" versions...though im afraid that will be too big considering im only sitting ~10.5 feet away.

main thing for me is NOT noticing the black bars for 2.35:1 movies. If this will be a problem I might just go with a 2.35:1 screen where I can make it so the black bars on blu-rays will project on bars of velvet above and below the screen.
oh and the screen will be directly across from the window, so the back of my head would be facing the window...if it matters.

yes you get the same exact warranty as a new model. mines on its way. bulb warranty is 90 days.
pglover19 12-14-10, 04:59 AM The HDMI 1 and Trigger output on my 6100 projector is not working. Epson is sending me a replacement projector but it is the 8100 model because they have no more 6100 projectors in stock. I am debating whether or not to get the 6100 fixed by sending it to the Epson repair center or keep the 8100 projector. My 6100 is in pristine condition and only about 200 hours on the lamp bulb. The HDMI 2 output is working fine. On the other hand, I will be receiving a refurbish 8100 projector. So, this is an upgrade from the 6100, and will have a new bulb and comes with a 2 yr warranty. But I have heard horrible stories about these refurbish units. I requested a pristine, like new 8100 projector. So, if you were in my position, what would you do? Please advise.
from what ive read the 8100 is not really THAT big an upgrade. If your 6100 is in fact in otherwise pristine condition I would opt to get the 6100 fixed. But, who knows, maybe it will get damaged during shipping back to you? Your choice. Do what your gut tells you to.
My 6100 is back to losing focus so I'll have to give them a call tomorrow for replacement 3. Hopefully they will offer a 8100 since I see they fixed that problem.

you may have better luck than me. when i asked them that i was told, no way. i can either take another 6100 ( if non on hand, would have to wait) or wait till mine got fixed...
No luck - the guy went and checked and said they had four left in stock. Warranty until May and I'm pretty sure the next one will lose focus before then... Love this thing, but getting tired of going 10' in the air twice each time I use it.
Here's my experience with the HC6100..
1. Purchased from BB on 2/8/09
2. 6/1/10 HDMI1 stops working
3. 8/1/10 HDMI2 stops working
4. 9/1/10 Call Epson and they send a refurb unit to replace my unit.
5. They forgot to include shipping labels with the refurb..So I have to pay shipping costs.. To compensate me, they send me an extra bulb. **
6. Warranty expires a few months later
7. Refurb unit has de-focusing issue.
8. Refurb unit develops a red band across the top of the image.
9. Refurb unit develops a blue tint across the bottom of image.
10. Refurb unit bulb melts at 1500 hours.
11. Find out that the "extra" bulb they sent me (in #5) was for a 6100i not hc6100.
12. Have to call Epson for the correct replacement bulb.
13. Replacement bulb arrives. The added brightness make the red/blue bands even more annoying.
14. Call Epson a few days later and seriously complain about the poor quality of these projectors.
15. Epson agrees to send 1 more replacement unit (a refurb hc6100) and mentions that this is a one time favor that they're doing me since I'm 4 months out of warranty.
16. Got the refurb.. Seems to be in great condition.. Sharp picture and so far it maintains focus....Though, that's how my original unit began it's short life.
After all this I can say that I am NOT impressed with the quality of the HC6100. On the other hand, their customer service is TOP NOTCH. They went above and beyond to correct the issues....even after my warranty had expired. So it has been a good and a bad experience.
You are lucky - at least they sent you a replacement unit for your out-of-warranty projector. My HC6100 also developed a banding issue across the top after it was about 4 months out of warranty (and only 6 months old, since it was a replacement for another issue I had with my original 6100). Espon Customer Service told me I had to take it to a service center and pay for the repairs myself. The estimate to fix it was an insane $2100 (to replace the "optical engine"), so I bought a new 8700UB instead (it was the same price).

I'm going after Epson for this. Same issue, green banding at the top, red at the bottom. There's only 1366 hours on the pj, I'm the original owner and had the unit for 30 months (6 months out of the warranty. Epson is reviewing my case right now. Here's what I sent them:
Model: PowerLite Home Cinema 6100
Original owner, only 30 months of troublefree operation in a dedicated room, T stable at 20C / 68F, filter cleaned regularly, well ventilated (hanging from the ceiling).

As acknoledge by xxx on the phone, I was not able to enjoy (in normal use) the Epson Projector for a reasonable lenght of time. Therefore, I request that Epson replaces or performs the appropriate repair on my unit, free of charge.
tommyv2 11-24-11, 02:40 PM That's exactly what happened to mine at 800 hours. Those panels and polarizers just aren't meant to last. Epson always exchanged mine, but still - it's a defect and it's going to happen anyway. My conditions were ideal, too... still happened.
Go after them - it's not fair.

So what exactly is the part causing problem? Panels and polarizers? Is this something you have changed yourself?
You say Epson always exchanged yours. Is that so even after warranty expired? Do you still own the pj?
tommyv2 11-24-11, 04:00 PM To make a long story short - I've had so many problems with Epson's tragic QC that they actually paid me off and took the projector back after almost 2 years. The less said about my experience, the better.
That being said, don't forget that if you buy your PJ new, most major credit cards add another year of warranty. That's 3 years total in the case of an Epson - pretty comfortable length of time, I'd say. I wouldn't buy one of these things used. Don't laugh, but in the span of 13 months I got and returned 16(!) Epson PJs all due to awful convergence, panel defects, noisy fans, etc.
bluejy2 12-16-11, 04:59 PM So question---does projector bulb "wear" out over time. I got this projector from my brother in law. It was in his bar for about a year and has over 4000 hours on the bulb. I think the picture is pretty good through HDMI, but not sure if it can get better. Like many, if it is good now---will be a new bulb make it great? Thanks!
Long time lurker but finally just registered. :)
