I am interested in burning some test patterns to disc, but it is my understanding that I need a blue filter to calibrate color correctly. Any ideas where I can obtain one locally (ny) or online?

Greetings

THX.com site sells blue filters.

Joe Kane productions also sells them.

Thanks! Is it recommended to also get Red and Green filters?

You can if you want to check how your color decoder is doing, especially red.

I'm reading mixed reviews on the THX blue glasses. Some say that they are not accurate/not the proper blue color? Is this true?

Most of the blue filters you will find have slight differences from one run to another. How anyone can say "this is the correct color" instead of "this one"....i guess all one can do is to get as many different filters as possible and double check them on a set where you can turn off the other colors to see which matches up the best.

Not a great answer, but reality.

does anyone know the acutal value of the blue filter
is a straight up 255 blue filter?

you think if i print straight up blue on a transparancy (used for old school overhead projectors and document cameras) that it would be sufficient?

Yep...best thing is a "Blue Only" mode on the display itself.

I bought all three filters from these guys and was satisfied with the results. Much cheaper than THX glasses, especially if shipping is international. Be aware that this approach is not exactly "high-tech," but the results are pretty decent.

Sorry for the old thread bump, didnt think a new thread was necessary.

I was just wondering if anyone knows any actual walk in stores that sell blue filters. I'd much rather not pay the $12 for shipping from the THX online store if I can get them locally. Anyone? Thanks.:)

Many photography stores carry these filters. I think Lee #071 or Roscolux #382 are the same color as the THX glasses.

Or, call the THX store. They will ship the glasses USPS which is about $2.50.

You have to call to get them to ship USPS? That would explain why they only have UPS for shipping options through the website which is quite expensive for something so small.

I think I will try looking up some photography stores first. Thanks.:)

Meteor|WAR -- I'm not sure where you got the $12 S&H charge from. According to the THX Online store (http://www.costore.com/THX/productenlarged.asp?peid=87&pid=930793), the S&H is $2.50 for one pair of glasses via USPS to most of the USA.

The "correct blue filter" is the Kodak Deep Blue Tricolor #47B. This appears to be what the THX glasses are, also. The equivalent Lee filter is their "Tokyo Blue #071". The Blue filter supplied by DVE (www.videoessentials.com) appears to be a darker colored blue because it also contains an Ultraviolet component (which may be needed for correct calibration of some Plasma displays).

Unless you can find a Photography store that carries Lee filters, your only source is to either get them online or have the store special order them (which isn't cheap).

The least cost is to get the THX glasses or to buy the Spears & Munsil calibration disc -- http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1131344. The filters are included in the cost of the disc. They are also included as part of the Digital Video Essentials HD Basics blu-ray calibration disc, but the Spears & Munsil disc is better, IMHO.

Some people have gotten a sample filter pack direct from Lee (for free). However you have to select the right pack (which includes samples of a lot of their different filters), and I don't remember which one that is.

htgk -- My above reply is for you too. The Red and Green filters are not required since you usually cannot adjust the needed parameters to make those useful. Although, some display devices do have that capability, and a significant amount of calibration experience is needed to properly use them (otherwise you can do more harm than good -- ie. screw up your display performance).

Meteor|WAR -- BTW, I paid about $3.50 S&H for 3 pair of THX glasses about 4 years ago.

Maybe the option for USPS varies by location.

These are the only shipping options it gives me:

Greetings

They say they fix it after the fact. An inability to add that as an option on the site.

Hi,
have never had that filter but most filters need to be primed in order to work, fill the holding area with water. Once that is filled with water and it still isn't working make sure them impeller and all other parts are working. If it still isn't working you can go to their website and I'm sure they have help on there for your type of eclipse.

I believe jackportd thinks we're talking about aquarium or pool filters....

I guess the A in AVS stand for Aqua - was going to come up with something smart for the V and S too, but yeah that didn't work :)

Does anyone know if I can also order these types of blue filters from this site?

http://www.adorama.com/

If so can someone help me find them? I am placing an order for a meter and would like to pick up a blue filter too if I can. Thanks!
