Good Afternoon,

I bought the Planar PD7060 HD Projector and it should be coming in on Tuesday. I do now, however, have to purchase the cables, but seem a little confused on what route to go...

I want to connect my

Surround Sound
XBOX 360
HD Box
My CPU

Below is the back of the projector...
http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/974/planar1hb0.jpg

Its a gift for my father (The XBOX being mine, of course ) and I want to be be able to give him the best video experience possible. I do not want to purchase unnecessary and unneeded cables, so I was wondering if someone could help me out.

Would I connect my XBOX 360 via components?
My HD Box via HDMI?
My Cpu via ..?
And my Surround Sound??

I assume they will have to be pretty long cables as it will be go through the roof... (I live in Texas, will the attic damage the cables in the summer?).

What kind of cables should I buy and where is the best place to get a deal (monoprice)??

Thanks

Any Help is greatly appreciated..

Will be posting pictures after its set up :D

Need to know more about your system. What are you using for audio and video switching and what does it offer? Does it have HDMI?

Will be posting pictures after its set up :DYour initial guesses sound good.

If your computer has a DVI (the white port) out on it, I'd use the DVI cable to connect the computer to the projector. If not, connect it to the "RGB-HD" plug, which looks like a traditional VGA port.

Unless you plan on using your Xbox for HD-DVDs, or upscaling DVDs and watching lots of DVDs, it makes more sense to use your Xbox through component and your HD box for through HDMI, as you suggested.

If your Xbox has an HDMI port, and you want to use it as your upscaling DVD player, it will only upscale through HDMI, while your HD box should have no problems with broadcast/dish/cable signals through component.

Anyway, your first guess sounds good, and I hope the above helps with the PC question.;)

Monoprice is your best bet, they are great quality and inexpensive.

I dont have one yet... Do you recommend one?
I found this and thought maybe it could work....

Suggestions..

If that's the case - then Ill definitely try to connect it via HDMI. The AV Switch seems like a great idea. I could connect my HD Box and XBOX 360 via the switch.

That only leaves me with the CPU and Surround Sound

f your computer has a DVI (the white port) out on it, I'd use the DVI cable to connect the computer to the projector. If not, connect it to the "RGB-HD" plug, which looks like a traditional VGA port.
The CPU is great, but the video card is very weak. It do not have a DVI port on it, just a standard blue VGA. What would you recommend me do if I indeed do purchase that particular AV Switch.

Should I get another one with a VGA port? Or should I get just a very long cable that goes directly to the Projector?

Also, dealing with the surround sound system - im assuming it does not connect to the projector as well as the HD box.. Or Does it?

Im sorry if I seem very stupid, but I'm new with this :D

Edit:
In my cart right now is this.....

Any suggestions as to what I should add :D

am I good?

Also, is it possible to connect a over the air HDTV antenna to the Projector? Looks like it may be a bit tough...
Any Recommendations

**I realize im asking a lot of questions, many of them easily answerable, but I was unable to find anything in the search field.
Thanks a lot, I really do appreciate it.

Does your AV receiver in your surround sound system handle any component or HDMI inputs ?

The Planar DVI port appear to be a DVI-D so it only handles digital, you can get a DVI-HDMI adapter..http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10419&cs_id=1041902&p_id=2029&seq=1&format=2

VGA to RCA probably may not work. I'd keep it on VGA.

I would simply use the projector as a switch...
PC via VGA to projector
HD Box via HDMI to projector
360 via HDMI + DVI-HDMI adapter to DVI-D port.
All audio goes directly into your surround sound system

As Ed said, keep the VGA as VGA.

Also, if you don't already have an HDMI switch, I don't think you'll see any difference in quality hooking your HDTV box up through component, so you may be making this a bit more complicated than it needs to be.

My advice would be try some DVDs through the Xbox 360 over component and HDMI. You should see a difference, but you may not. (The Xbox 360 should upscale over HDMI, but won't upscale over component)

Then, try the HDTV box through component and HDMI. YMMV, but my guess would be that you won't be able to tell the difference.

If you can't tell the difference with either, hook them up in whatever way is easiest. If you can only tell the difference with one or the other, use HDMI with that input. If you really see a difference with both, then I would suggest the HDMI switch.;)

Hope that helps.

I havent decided on a Surround Sound System yet...
Since its going to be primarily for games, more so than Movies..

How's this...

I'll Throw a curve in to the mix here...If your Xbox does indeed have HDMI then by all means use it. If it does not, It will most definitely upconvert via VGA cables from MS.

The Sony - BRAVIA 1000W 5.1-Ch. Home Theater appears to be primarily a DVD upscaling system not a complete surround sound system. It looks great and has wireless rear speakers but the DVD/receiver has limited input/output options. I suggest looking at a real HTIB system.. http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Onkyo-HT-S6100-7-1-Receiver-Speaker-System-with-iPod-Dock-HTS6100/sem/rpsm/oid/218783/catOid/-12954/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do
It cost a little more but it will handle anything you throw at it. I am not 100% sure but it looks like it may handle Analog to Digital conversion. If this system has a analog to digital conversion you can essential connect everything to this receiver and have one HDMI cable out to your projector.

I don't think you'll need a switcher. Since you have DVI and HDMI ports on you projector. Unless you have more than 2 HDMI sources. The cables looks fine. I'd go with HDMI cable and DVI-HDMI adapter rather than 1 DVI-HDMI cable. But either way they should look fine.

It does have an HDMI port - I should then just use the HDMI switch; connect both the HDTV and XBOX to the AV Switch and have one HDMI switch head out to the projector??

That looks like a great HTIB. I read online just now,
"HDMI REPEATER (ability to plug in a single HDMI cable to handle audio as well as send the video to your tv through the single HDMI out) makes this a great buy for those looking for that and a great sounding system."

Does that mean I can connect the HDTV, XBOX, etc into this and have no need for the AV Switch....?

Thanks again guys!

Okay, Looks like ive got everything except that i dont know how exactly the Onkyo would connect to the projector (or does it connect to the projector at all??) ... It may sound stupid, but is it via HDMI?

Since I will be using a switch (Since the XBOX and HD Box both use HDMI) will it go under

I have a
HDMI AV Switch
LONG HDMI Cable
3-4 SHORT HDMI Cables
Long VGA Cable

What about the Over the Air HDTV... To me its very important to have this because I want to watch Football games (FOX, ABC, NBC) all broadcast on HDTV via Over the Air..

It seems that all Antennas use a Coax cable. Coax doesnt seem to be able to connect to a projector. How would that work.

Thanks for all the help thus far. looks like i got most of it down! :D

That receiver looks to be all you need for the HDMI and component sources. Put all your sources...Xbox, and HD box from cable or dish to the inputs and one output each to the projector.
In essence the receiver IS your switch.

Multiple HDMI sources in to the receiver and 1 HDMI out to projector.
I think you need a tuner to convert the over the air signal. If you need a tuner any good old vcr with component out would do. Just connect the VCR to the receiver like you would any other source.

Have another look at the back panel of the receiver. There are 5 HDMI ports. If you look carefully you'll see there are 4 ins and 1 out. There will be a button on the remote to let you cycle through the HDMI sources. If you want to know how things work and what kind of function the receiver has just go a search for its user manual. I believe I read somewhere the receiver in this HTIB system is essentially the Onkyo 606

If the OP is like me, he'll want different picture settings for each input, and unless the Onkyo has picture settings built in for each input, he may want an HDMI splitter for the HDMI out on the receiver to the projector. That way you can have different pic settings for say the 360 and HD Cable Box.

Disregard if i make no sense.

I do not know about his projector, but a lot of projectors have memory settings. This allows you to use one HDMI input and yet you can customize the settings for the different sources.
