So I have a really nice 1080i HF100 camera and iMovie. I can import, edit, etc., but that's were the fun stops. I need way to play then HD on my TV.
AppleTV lookss great, but it's limited to 540/30p @ 5Mbps (actually I ran a test and it's bitrate was only 3.9Mbps). I hate the thought of dropping the resolution and increasing compression. But I don't have an AppleTV to see how it really looks on screen.
What are you using for HD playback on your TV -- what's your set up, settings, etc and what do you think?
I'm using Final Cut Express setup with the AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080 50i easy setup, taking recorded footage from the camera on FXP mode at 50i.
I then export using QuickTime conversion to an mp4 file using the H.264 codec with settings of 1920x1080 HD, 24fps and 17000kbps (to match the camera's original bitrate). I can then play that mp4 file through my PS3 to the HDTV. The problem I have at the moment is really bad ghosting on the TV which I am fairly sure is a deinterlacing artefact although I'm not sure how to fix that in the export process, there doesn't seem to be a deinterlace option in the FCE export settings.

For HD playback, PS3 is one of the best; and you get the bonus of a blu-ray player :) . It can play the SD card straight from your HF100.

Does it play back the clips in sequence w/o stop gaps or one clip at a time?

If your SD card is in AVCHD format (with all the directory structure), it will play the clips in sequence with no gaps. And you can skip forward and backward at the chapter points. So it can play the SD card straight from your camcorder flawlessly.

Does it matter if its a Canon rather than Sony? I read they have different file structures.

It does not matter as far as PS3 is concerned.
