I've currently got a Sony LCD projection hdtv that has the optical block problem (blue spots) that they are repairing free of charge till year end. When I called to schedule service, they offered me the choice of free optical block replacement or a significant discount on one of 3 new LCD models. I'm going to go with the discount to get a better TV in the end, but I'm having trouble comparing the two 52" models noted in the subject. I'm not even sure the Z4100 exists, as I can find little online about it, even on Sony's web site, though I did find some info on the 46z4100

So, this is a stretch I'm sure, but does anybody know the difference between the z4100 and the w4100?? The z4100 is offered at $140 less than the w4100, so I'm leaning that way, but would like to know if w is newer, better, more advanced or has any features that would justify the extra $140.

Thanks

Unfortunately, Sony does not make a 52" Z4100. It's my understanding that the Z performs better than the W when compared side-by-side and there is a significant cost difference between the a Z and W of the same size.

However, if you want a 52", then you have to get either the W, V, or an XBR series.

Funny thing is, someone posted a Sony LCD projection in our local Craigslist that had the same problem. I happened to find the service notice and let the person know about it. They emailed me with similar details about Sony's response. If that was your Craigslist post, what a small world!

Also, Sony's handling of this problem is pretty top notch. I've never been a big Sony fan but that is a great way to take care of your customers.

No, that wasn't me on Craigslist. If you google Sony blue blob you'll find all kinds of info and websites about this. Of course, lots of info here on avsforum about it too.

I think it's strange they offered me a TV that doesn't exist. I'll verify it's really 52" and go from there.

Thanks for the feedback.

Sony emailed me the offer sometime over the weekend while I was in hurricane mode; it's not a z4100 they are offering, but a v4100. Looks like I'm going with the w4100 based on what I've read on it.

Thanks
