IF you don't need RF, I'd say the biggest consideration is that the One is PC-programmable and will have all of your components in the database. The MX-450 is not PC programmable and you will likely need to learn commands to it. Unless you just prefer the form factor of the MX-450, you might be better off to compare the one with the MX-810 or 880.

ive heard and read rumors of the ONE having RF in future.. so im slightly hesitant to buy it, because if it comes out with it im stuck...

and to the MX-810 880 suggestion is havent really looked into those because of their price point, the ONE and the 450 are within a couple of dollars of each other.

edit i do that the 810 are a bit cheaper now. should i consider it.

Remotes aren't in the same class really. Harmony One is designed for end users with no programming abilities. MX450 is designed to be programmed by installers. MX will be a better remote, if you can pick up on programming.

I think the MX-450 is a cool remote. What I like about it is that you can edit macros on the remote without a PC. I have a Harmony 880 and 1,000, and both have been a royal pain in the you-know-what because Logitech's online programming interface sucks and several of my components, like my Zektor switcher and Pany industrial plasma were not in the database. :(

I think I prefer a self-contained device. Besides I like the price, although it's already more than twice the cost of my MX-500.

I sure wished somebody would build an activities based remote like the MX-810 that didn't require a PC for every little change. I have a hard believing the MX-810 could not have been made easier to program if the customization interface was built into the remote. You could even have it so that the thing plugs into a computer -- or better yet wireless network for firmware updates that would provide the latest component updates.

As someone who's been using JP1 for years, I kind of wish that the MX-450 had the OPTION to edit stuff with a PC. I find that I am learning devices that are preprogrammed so that I can put keys where I want them, not where the stored file says. Now, maybe there is a way to move keys around in the same device, so that, say, the RED button on one device is in the same place as the RED button on another device, but I haven't found it.

Reassigning keys within a device seems to require learning a command onto the desired key. Would be nice if I could upload the keymap and command set to a PC and do drag-and drop.

It is nice not to HAVE to design it on a PC, but would the OPTION kill them to provide? I hear there's a USB plug...

I agree with you on all your points.

The USB plug is located on the back in the battery compartment. I hooked up my usb cable to it but it did nothing.

Still, with those little quirks I love this remote and am glad I didn't go any other direction.

OK, I eat my words! :o I just dusted off a Harmony 1000 I had lying around and had not used in years because of above-mentioned problems. However, Logitech's device database and software has *dramatically* improved. I was stunned to find both my 7 series industrial Panny and the Zektor in their database.

My nod now goes to the Harmony One based on its PC interface capabilities. While I like the idea of not needing a PC to edit macros, my sense is that Web-enabled remotes are the wave of the future.
