View Full Version : Is 120hz output possible from a VP?

I was reading a little on the Cary 11v video processor and in the specs it states "1080p @ 120 Hz WUXGA output". Does this mean that if you have a 1080p display that does not have 120hz refresh rate for smooth motion for sports, etc that this would output that to your display?

If anyone has any experience/info on the Cary 11v please let me know.

Thanks.

BTW, link for Cary 11v:

Two parts: First off you need to find out whether this 120Hz is just frame doubling or if it is doing some form of motion compensation...then...and the much bigger issue is

Do you know of any displays that accept a 120Hz input signal...AND if you do do you know what they do to that signal?

Ahh, I see. Very good points...well atleast the PIP and 2 HDMI outs would be cool (especially if the both HDMI outs could support video and audio).

Thanks for the response.

I did read this statement as well in the Cary 11v specs. To my knowledge 1080p120 is not within the specs of any common connection type. 1600p60 is the current maximum on 30" LCD PC monitors but it requires a 24pin DVI connection (duallink).

A HDMI connection would require HDMI-B type of connectors which can't be found anywhere (to my knowledge).

Another problem is that (as of now) there are simply no displays or beamers out there which could accept a 1080p120 signal.

There are a few "dual link" hdmi monitors out there, but they are using the additional bandwidth to get more pixels - not faster ones. There isn't any real advantage of sending 120 Hz out of the VP because they are only repeating frames or flashing them, and that can be done inside the monitor/projector.

On a related note, I'm hoping all 120/240Hz TV's start offering 120Hz inputs.

It would be nice to see what the VP pros can start offering in terms of contrast adjusted frame insertion and motion interpolation. I think a lot can be done with it, if its handled by a team dedicated specifically to such work.

There is potentially a niche market for 1080p out of a VP at > 60hz rates in the analog display world.

My Sony GDM-FW900 (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1061724) could do 1080p96 (if I had a source that produced it). Some analog projectors could benefit from higher refresh rates as well. I started this thread (http://www.curtpalme.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12302) over at Curt Palme about one potential way to achieve this result.
