When you download TV shows in HD, you get an SD and and HD copy.

I wish that iTunes hid this from you so that you only see one copy in the library, and it automatically used the correct one on the correct device.

Incidentally, I'd also like it to have this functionality with songs (the ability to have a ALAC and AAC version of the same song, but only "see" one of them in iTunes and have iTunes manage the metadata and ratings identically for the 2 copies.

Generally, a system where a "pc-quality" and "iPod-quality" version of the same media file are on the system, but made transparent by iTunes.

I really thought this was going to be a part of iTunes when I saw that HD downloads included an iPod version too :-(

I was also hoping for this so that I could use a full-quality mpeg rip of a dvd on the computer (or other high quality codec) and a lower quality one that is compatible with the iPod.

You'd need a new container file format to accomplish this. I don't think any current remotely common formats could handle the extra data needed, with the possible exception of Matroska, which is (a) not supported by iTunes, obviously, and (b) pretty rare to see used in audio applications anyway.

iTunes could just use the 2 existing files, and hide that fact from the user in the UI, while syncing the metadata between the 2 files.

Anyone else notice that if you don't use 1 click buy that you DON'T get the HD version of the file? I discovered this getting the free shows. I got the SD shows. When I switched to 1 click buy then I got the HD and SD versions.

no I didn't notice that one;
but there is a nasty little gotcha - for those using filenames without track or disk number. You can't prevent this in Preferences anymore. If this is a problem for you use the following Terminal command lines to suppress:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes create-filenames-with-tracknumber -bool FALSE
defaults write com.apple.iTunes create-filenames-with-disknumber -bool FALSE

Hopefully this was just an oversight that will be corrected soon...

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I couldn't figure out how people were getting HD, since all the free episodes I tried were SD. I changed to 1-click, and, as you said, I'm downloading the HD versions now.

Believe me, it took me a while to figure that out too. Found a post on slickdeals about it. Apparently there are only three people in the world that don't use 1 click buy.

Personally, I really like using the shopping cart. For me it is like a wish list and a buffer before buying. But I really think that Apple doesn't want people to use it. Like a feature that they wish they never added. The AppStore refuses to us it and now the HD content won't use it. It makes you wonder what is next.

Hi.
I have connected my itunes library through Airport express=>optical=>home theater.
Today I was previewing some music(Michael learns to rock ..pop ballads..) and they sounded awesome. When I played the downloaded(purchased version) song it is definitely "softer"..guitar was muddy at best.I tested this on 10 more songs from that band and still the same.
Totally pissed at itunes for this reason.
Anybody have similar experience?

Thanks
PS: do let me know if this is not the right forum to post this.

There have been reports of equalization issues with iTunes 8... you may want to try toggle EQ on and off. Check MacFixIt for more details, cuz I think they have a whole page devoted to iTunes8 issues, and "muddy-sounding music" was one of the issues.

8.0.1 was just released. You might want to see if the update helps. The notes says it "improves performance" whatever that means, among other things. I wouldn't put it past Apple to correct an audio problem without disclosing it in the release notes.

Also, you weren't maybe previewing the 256kbps iTunes Plus songs and then downloading the 128kbps drm'd ones?
