I am new here. I would like to buy dvd recorder/vcr combo. What would you recommend? I am looking for one with a digital tuner. If I get one with a digital tuner can you record digital channels on the dvd as well as the vcr.

The Panasonic combo model EZ48, has a digital tuner, but does not allow recording to be made from digital channels to the vcr side. There aren't that many combo units with digi-tuner that I'm aware of-LG makes one that got terrible reviews, and I think there's a JVC model still out there.
The Pannys are a bit pricy, but the EZ48's predecessor, the EZ47 can be found in a few places for less than the 48...though you should be forewarned that the ez47 has a reputation for being buggy at times.

If you have to occasionally put recordings from digital channels on VHS, can't you just record them to DVD first and transfer them?

^^Yeah, dubbing home made dvds to vhs can be done, though, if you still have a separate vcr, it might be simpler to use the dvd recorder's digital tuner to feed the vcr, that way, you're not burning time dubbing the same thing to vhs.

Thanks guys. Another question, if I were to get a dvd/hdd recorder with a digital tuner can you record digital channels on both? If so what do you recommend?

Yes, you will be able to record any digital channels the unit picks up, whether it's connected to an over the air antenna, or cable, to either the hdd or a disc, though it's always best to record to the drive in case something funky happens, like a hiccup with a blank dvd.
There are only 3 choices here in the US for hdd models, last year's Phillips 3575 and it's newer brother the 3576, and the new Magnavox H2160. All 3 can be found at Walmart-the H2160 online only, with the 3575 available at most Sam's Club for a price lower than at Walmart. Check the thread at the top of the forum for exhaustive details and information on the Phillips.
