View Full Version : To those who attended Cedia...
CollinViegas 09-12-08, 11:31 PM My theater is finally completed, cleaning out the dust this weekend and finishing touches.
My price range for a projector is $5000
Where I am located there is literally nowhere to demo projectors, our biggest electronics store has the epson 1080UB in there showroom and that is it.
I am planning on ordering my projector this coming friday. My screen is an SMX 120"D 2.35.1
To those who have seen these projectors please leave your impressions.
Sony VPL-VW60, Sony VPL-HW10, Panasonic AE3000, Epson 7500UB.
JVC is not carried by the store I deal with and since I have built up a good relationship with them and they price things extremely well for me I have these options to choose from.
Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to help me out with this decision and before people say go out and look fo yourself. 1} most of these projectors are only on pre order and 2} I have nowhere to see them...
Thanks again.
mark haflich 09-13-08, 12:11 AM The Epson won't be available until December. That would rule that out if i read you correctly. The Sony 60 was not on display at Cedia. so one culd not compare it to the 10. they are both goos machines. I would choose the 60 over the 10. compare the specs and features. Ireally can't comment on the Pany.
chadly25 09-13-08, 01:34 AM I own the 60 and am very familiar with it's performance. I could not tell the difference from my 60 and the new 10 other than the CIH stuff. Go with the 10 and enjoy saving the extra $$$
zductive 09-13-08, 02:13 AM epson 1080UB 7500, sony vw60 are very very nice projectors. IMHO they are not as nice as the RS2 but, they are a lot less expensive.
I could have been happy with any of them. Service from Epson has been superb (sorry to say that )
To me it boils down to one tradeoff. Is your room fully treated to be a batcave? If you have any light (I do mean any) on in the room, or if you have white walls the contrast ratio that your paying for is going to be reduced significantly. In that case, I would go for a more reasonable projector 1080ub (like I have) . Otherwise, go for broke!
Is your room set up for 2.35 format? If it isn't, the vertical stretch capability of some of these projectors is going to be wasted.
Generally speaking, I agree with the reviews and would feel ok about going with their conclusions. This is certainly true if the reviews have a consensus.

As far as other lighting, it depends on how much there is and things like whether it goes straight to the screen. In some situations some LEDs will put less light on the screen than even a blackout with 50k:1 on/off CR, while others could hurt even 2k:1.

which is absolutely right. I recently changed the colour scheme in our viewing from from darkish oranges/reds to white (we are trying to sell our house) and the difference in image pop was really significant. It was like having another inferior projector.
The amount of light bouncing back off a white wall to the screen really does effect the punch in a lot of scenes.

A little about the room itself.
The room is fully treated, My walls are a copy of SMX {Ruben's Theme} Red and black GOM. The ceiling is Matte Black, The bulk head is Matte Red.
The room is truly a bat cave, infact I wish I would have put more lighting in it. I have 11 pot lights in the room and even with them on and my camera set to night mode I cannot take a decent picture in the room that captures the details. I am having a photographer friend come by after it is completely cleaned to take some pics for me.
The room is setup for 2:35.1 but I will be using the zoom method for the beginning {about a year}, I do upgrade alot and only plan on keeping this projector for a year or 2 which is why I really dont see the value in the $8000
and up projectors.
Randy Ta 09-13-08, 01:06 PM Suggest you also consider the Planar 8150. It is in your price range and if you like the DLP look this is a great option. I think it is currently one of the best DLP projectors out there and I will probably be purchasing one next month. Jason Turk did a review of the projector and can answer any of your questions.

I'm wary of Panasonic due to complaints about QC. I have demoed three Epson 1080UBs and had varying experiences with the demos, some maybe due to QC issues, such as why was one much dimmer than expected even though it had no more than 12 hours on the bulb, and so I favor Sony and JVC over the other brands.
AV Science is a 4 1/2 hour drive from Ottawa, if you ever want to take a trip to demo some projectors.
