I have a Harmony 880 for the family room. I have the equipment inside an entertainment center. I am looking for a cheap IR extender option. I saw the Next Gen option but was bummed to know that it does not work with remotes that have rechargable batteries. Not looking to spend too much.

I have about 4 components to connect. Thanks in advance for replies.

Something like a Hot Link Pro would probably work.

Or you could do like I did. Buy an 890 and sell the 880 on craigslist/eBay. To me the resell value + cost of IR solution was close enough to justify the difference in price of the 890 ($225 at the time) with the added bonus of not needing line-of-sight since it is an RF solution.

I'm in the same situation - I was using a Harmony 688 with the Next Gen an dit worked great; now I've upgraded to the Harmony 720 and am looking for an IR extender as well.

Here is what I bought and everybody should avoid:

This unit works as advertised BUT you have to point the remote almost EXACTLY at this unit for it to pick up... really sucks! I mean my projector will pick up the remote IR no matter where I point it in the room so why can't these units be as sensitive.

If anybody has any suggestions of IR extenders that work I would love to know as well.

That is exactly what I bought. It should work unless you have a large plasma. The IR interference from my 58" plasma made the repeater worthless. I had to go with RF.

I have a Xantech repeater system in my family room and it's flawless. I have a 75 ft. Cat-5 run from the receiver in my family room to my basement, and it's just like the components are right there. I also have the IR receiver attached by velcro tape to the underside of a 50" plasma, and there's no interference whatsoever. A bit more costly of an option, aobut $100-$125, but it works incredibly well.

Something to think about if the Hot Link doesn't work out.
